CHICAGO , Aug. 5. When a team of five
men score forty-five out of fifty birds and
docs not set n place , the shooting must , of
n verity , be of n high blasa. Such was the
case today In the Dupont world's ' cham
pion tournament In progress at Uurnsldc.
One of them was an Illinois team , captained
by A. C. Anson , the noted ball player. The
entire day was devoted to the team race ,
and both sets of trnps were kept running
from D a. m. until 6 o'clock. Twenty-eight
teams competed for the state championship
and a veritable battle of giants ensued , The
Iowa team , known as the "Indians , " con
sisting of Gilbert , the world's champion ,
King , Trotter , Hudd and Grimm , ties for
the first place with the Illinois' learn No.
1 , consisting of Marshall , Bacon , the state
champion , lllngham , Crosby and Powers.
Each team dropped but one bird. Three
teams from Ohio , Pennsylvania and Illinois ,
tied for second place. The Nebraska team
No. 1 took third , with forty-seven , and sev
eral teams divided fourth with forty-six.
Old-timers say that It was the greatest
shooting ever seen at a tournament. The
weather was Intensely hot , but during the
afternoon a breeze sprung up , and as the
birds were a selected lot , the shooting be
came very difficult. The attendance was
enormous. Hundreds' of women were In
the throng. The conditions Imposed were
that five men on each team should belong to
ono state and belong to some regularly or
ganized club. They shot at ten birds each ,
$50 entrance for each team , ten birds per
man , with $50 added for each team entered
by the Dupont company. W. L. Shepard
and A. L. Knox refcreed.

A meeting of the ' 98 meet club was hold
last evening at D. J. O'Hrlcn'H , Fifteenth
and Capitol avenue , and the work prelimin
ary to the jaunt to the Loulsvlllo meet
was pushed nearly to completion , leaving
little more to he done except the arrang
ing of a few minor details. From all re
ports It Is oipparent that at least two dozen
fully uniformed wheelmen will be In line
to represent Omaha. The following of-
llcera were elected : Captain , Harry Jltil-
hnll ; lieutenant , J. E. Howe ; bugler , F.
\V. Fitch. Samples of the complete uni
form to be worn by the club were on ex
hibition and pronounced "duzzlers" by
those who Inspected them. The cap Is of
white llannel decked with Ilarlng Ak-Sar-
Ucn colors. The balance of the suit Is of
white. Large badges , done In Ak-Sar-Hcn
colors and bearing the Inscription , "Omaha
Wants the League Meeting In 189S. " were
distributed to the delegation. Uefore ad

There Is considerable grain being moved
out ot Nebraska , but the outgoing
quantities nro not so great as to tux the
equipment ot any of thu Nebraska roads.
There Is a steady movement of grain east
ward , but there Is no wild rush to ship the
grain out of the state. The farmers have
thirty days yet to dispose ot tholr grutn , and
they nro In no great hurry about clearing
out their cribs. They arc rather hoping for
a rlso In the prices , but It It docs not como
along pretty BOOM they will have to let their
crops go for what they can get. Eastern
security holders will not allow the furmera
to hold back their grain this year , vainly
waiting for better prices.
Thcro Is said to be a great deal of grain
stored In the Chicago elevators that has
been brought In uy the western roads. It
Is being held there because the roads cast
of Chicago have not yet cut down tholr
rates. H Is probable , however , that these
llnea will soon lower their grain rates In
order to successfully compete with the Gulf
roads. The roads from here to Chicago say
they cannot further aid In reducing these
rates , as they have already gone down to the
very lowest notch. So If there ls to bo any
further cutting It must be done east of
Chicago. It Is noticeable that the lake lines
are carrying more grain cast of Chicago , nt
present , than the all rail routes. Of course.
If nny considerable cut la made the latter
will again carry their share of the business.

union depot question Tuesday afternoon
between business "men and railroaders. Thla
time n delegation from the Commercial club
waited on Judge William H. Kelly , general
solicitor of the Union Pacific. They asked
what reply would be mudo to the communi
cation of the Burlington to the effect that
It was ready In go ahead with the comple
tion of the Mason street depot and desired
the co-opcratton of the Union Pacific In the
matter.
Judge Kelly replied that the document
would first have to bo considered by the rp-
cotvcrs of the road and not until that waa
done would any answer be made to the
Burlington. He stated yesterday morning
that It might bo Eoveral weeks before this
was accomplished.
