CATTMC The receipts of cattle were
small to what they were yesterday , there
icing only aboi t ha f .as many. At the f time
time the receipts were a little larger than
an Thursday of last week. A large pro-
jiortion of all the catt'c ' here consisted of
: ornfed steers , there living1 fewer feeders
than yesterday or day before.
The market on fat cattle was slow nnd
weak , perhaps not much lower on the
best , but easier on the less desirable. There
was no life or snap to the trade , and the
market was a drag all the morning.
Only a few cows and heifers were on
sale , and they bronchi about steady prices
The feeder market wns also about steady
it the decline of the past two or three
days. There were only about a dozen fresh
loads on sale , but the speculators all had
largo holdings. The demand from the
country 1ms been light , and the large re
ceipts of the two days past have piled up
the yards. Sonic were estimating that
many as 2.000 or over of stoekcrs and
feeders were In the yards today. Repre
sentative sales :

from tinlltiinc ,
The hulldliiK Is so far beyond any fa
miliar proportions that at first sight all de
tails are lost upon Its broad front , writes
Marlon Crawford In the Century. The
mind and Judgment nrc dazed and stag
gered. The earth should not he able to
hear such weight upon Its crust without
cracking nnd bending Ilko nn overloaded
table. On each side the colonadcs run.
curving out llle giant arms , always open to
receive the nations that go up there to wor-
Rhlp. The dome broods over all , like a
giant's bend motlonleibs In meditation.
The vastness of the structure takes bold
of a maii as he Issues from the street by
which he has conic from Saiit' Angelo. In
the open space In the square and In the
ellipse between the colonndcB and on tins
steps 200,000 men could be drawn up In
rank and file , horse and fool and guns. Ex
cepting it be on some special occasion , there
are rarely more than 200 or SOO persons In
sight. The paved emptiness makes one
draw a breath of surprise , and human eyes
seem too small to take in all the Ilntncss.
below , all the breadth before nnd all the
height above.
Taken together the picture Is too big for
convenient sight. The Impression itself
moves unwieldily In the cramped brain. A
building about COO -feet high produces a
monstrous effect upon the mind. Set down
In words , a description of It conveys no
clear conception ; seen for the first time ,
the Impression produced by it cannot be
put Into language. H Is something like a
shock to the Intelligence , perhaps , and not
altogether n pleasant one. Carried beyond
the limits of a mere mistake , exaggeration
becomes n caricature , but when it is magni
fied beyond humanity's common measures
It may acquire nn clement approaching to
terror. The awe-strlklng giants of mythol
ogy were but magnified men. The first
bight of St. Peter's affects one as though ,
in the everyday streets , walking among
ono's fellows , one should meet with a man
forty feet high. * The strangest ,
most extravagant , most incomprehensible ,
most disturbing sight of nil Is to be seen
from the upper gallery In the cupola looking
down to tin ) church below. Hanging In
mld-alr , with nothing under one's feet , one
sees the church projected in perspective
within a huge circle. It Is as though one
saw it upside down and inside out. Few
men could bear to stand there without that
bit of lion railing between them and the
hideous fall , and the Inevitable slight dizzi
ness with the strongest head feels may
make one doubt for a moment whether
what Is really the floor below may not be
In reality a celling ubove and whether ono's
sense of gravitation be not inverted In an
extraordinary dream. At that distance
human beings look no bigger than files , and
the canopy of the high altar might bo an
ordinary table.
And thence , climbing up between the
double domes , one may emerge from the
almost terrible perspective to the open air ,
and suddenly sec all Home at one's feet , and
all the Roman mountains stretched out to
Bouth and east , In perfect grace of restful
outline , shoulder to shoulder , Ilko shadowy
women lying side by side and holding hands.
And the broken symmetry of streets and
squares ranges below , cut by the winding
ribbon of the yellow Tiber ; to the right the
low Aventlne , with the dark cypreunCB of the
Protestant cemetery beyond , and the
Palatine orcstcd with trees and ruins ; the
Plnciau 011 the left , with Its high gardens ,
and the macs of foliage of the Villa Medici
behind It ; th- > lofty tower of the cupltnl In
thu midst of the city ; nnd the sun clasping
all to Its heart of gold , the just and unjust ,
the new and the old alike , past and present ,
youth , ago and decay generous ns only the
sun can ho in this sordid and miserly world ,
where bread Is hut another namu for blood ,
and a rood of growing corn means a pound
of human llesh. Iho sun Is the only good
thing In nature Hint always gives Itself to
man for nothing hut the mere tiouhlo of
sitting In the sunshine , and Home without
sunlight Is u very grim nnd gloomy town to-
It Is worth the effort of climbing no high.
Four hundred feet in the air , you look down
on what ruled half the world by force for
ages uml on what ruled the other hulf today
by faith the greatest center of conquest and
of discord and of religion which the world
has ever seen. A thousand volumes have
been written about It by a thousand wl o
men. A word will tell what It ha been the

at the will of the Just and the. unjust , but
there was always more to hlicd , nnd there
were always moio hands to shed It. And
so It may be again hereafter ; for the name
of Home has u htnrt-stlrring ring , and thcro
has always been as much blood gplllcd for
