It Increasing the already verr Rreat Interest manifested In the gallant young Americans who are going to uphold the glorious tradi tions of Vnla on the Thames. From the first moment of their appearance here up to the present they have steadily Improved In form and have just as surely deservedly won the approbation of the press and public. On all sides the Nexv Haven oarsmen are clasned as thorough gentlemen and sportsmen of the first water. Consequently , however strong may be tbe desire amons Englishmen to see the Grand Challenge cup successfully de fended by a home crew , nobody will be grudge the Yale boys the victory if they de feat the crack crews of Britain and their triumph Is certain to be greeted almost as enthusiastically as If Lcander or New col- Ipqe turn out to be the winners. The utmost good feeling prevails on all si lea. tbe cup of good fellowship is overflowing - flowing and when the rival crews measure oars on Tuesday next It will be in healthy , honest rhalry. with no tinge cf bitterness on either side. The withdrawal of Eton schoolboys having been gracefully brought about , there will bo no necessity for rowing a trial heat for the Grand on July 0 and the first contest for that trophy will therefore occur on the day following. A change for the better In many respects was made in the Yale boat today. The English oars have been tried and found not adapted to the Yale crew. A * a result they have been discarded and American oars will carry the sons of Old Ell to victory or de feat. feat. There There is no cock-sureness about the crew , but they will row their best , are In the pink of condition , and will at least come very near capturing the Grand. That is about the situation of affairs from the American standpoint , although Hob Cook appears to look gloomy , shakes his head somewhat despondently and Intimates that he is not satisfied with the work of his pupils. Dut Bob Cook has been known to do the same thing many a time before , and then have his crew walk away from their opponents. to the great dismay of the latter. In fact , the throwing of colj water upon the chances of Yale's crew is in some quarters looked upon as being an old trick of the master roach ; so not much importance Is attached to his cloudy forebodings. Everybody about the Yale headquarters hopes for the best and few people would be astonished to see the dark blue of Yale driven to victory on the Thames. POINTERS FROM THE BRITISH. Mr. Cook has not been too proud to try everything In the English style of rowing which looked advantageous to Yale , and this policy , instead of being sneered at , has met with the heartiest approv&l of all. Trinity tCambrtdg" ) people have been particularly courteous to the Americans. J. B. Close , the coach of that college's first crew , has done everything possible to assist Mr. Cook in his work , and when Clarke , the coxs wain of the Yale boat , was under the weather , the ' o.xswuin of Trinity took his pac ! and thus added to the good feeling existing at Henley. Bob Cook this morning was out on horse back , and put the Yale men over the second half of the " couise In 3:25 , with a CS-stroke. This Is "the best time yet made and it has done much to give confidence to the Americans and their supporters. The New college crew did the same listanoe in the sam ? time a few days ago , but under better conditions. Tlu-rc was a strong wind off tbe Bucks shore this morning and a heavy fog made matters still more uncomfortable , but the Yale boys were out for early practice. They were compelled , however , to wait until 11 o'clock for the ends of thtir slides to be lowered and placed at the angle they occupied previous to trying the English style of even slide. The men then did some short stretches above tbe bridge with the old oars and slides In regular position Gd pronounced themselves better satisfied. Clake. : the American coxswain , xvas well enough to be In tbe Yale boat , and handled the rudder ropes admirably , in spite of the fact that re wns all muffled un Leaner did the course in 7:10. : covering the first half In 3 31 with a 31 stroke , but the members of the crew were exhausted at the Qnish. Trinity , rowing short stretches against tbe second crew of that college , and with the latter very close , did the course in 7:23. : New college made a record over the min ute barrier , going 127 feet beyond. Leander and New college are looked upon as Yale's strongest rivals , and the latter , it la admitted , will take a lot of beating. Trinity Hall , with flve members of the crew which beat Cornell , may also be looked upon as certain to put up a good race , and so ihe contest for the Orand may be snld to have narrowed down to Yale , Leander. New and Trinity Hall. Nearly one-half of the seats on the grand stand near the finish have been turned over to the Americans for the accommoda tion of their friends , and it was the desire to hav < > as many as possible present , which , combined with other reasons , prompted the Henley regatta people to bring about the withdrawal of the Eton school boya. The crew U happy , as are all the Yale followers. tt will , as Intimated above , delight all Americans to know that this morning Yale returned to her old form. Donny Clarke is now back In the boat , and the original American oars were used. Everybody as- aorlitcd with Yale was anxious for the Jnal test. It has been decided to retain the old oars , and next Tuesday everything tn and about the boat will be American. Shortly after 12 o'clock the crew rowed several spurts down the river and then returned to Kawloy court to start away on tin- last half ( which Is about forty yard * longer than the first ) . The best previous time for the last half this year Is New's bit ; trial last wccl ; In 3:25. : This was made under the most favorable conditions. With the remaining time for Improvement It is a question settled and the boys all feel well satifflrd. " President DeLiberour feels very much grat ified with the possibilities of the Yale gaiduu party , to be given tomorrow afternoon. Fully nine-tenths of those invited have ac cepted. The crew which will represent America in the race tomorrow night has been de cided upon. Only a spin was taken this evening.
