The fpclltiB uinoni ; inen-lmntH so far as can bo learned from Interviews with those who havu been In thu t-lty ilnrlns the punt few days , and from li-ltci-H received by Jobbers. Is thai the Hltuallon In the country Is all that rould bo expected and that they are not at all worried by present llKhl tradp , as they llBtire that the fall trade will more thnn make' up for It. In Omaha business con tinues rather quiet , but no more no than II lias been the Kt-cnlcr portion of the past two months or more. Local retail mer chants , like their brothers In the country , tiru also looking for a. Hood lull trade. The manufacturers are talking home pat ronage ut every opportunity and are tluliiK nil lhat Is possible to pet their Hoods Into the market. IliirhiK the past week the M'cretnry of the .Manufacturers' association called upon the meichants located In the different towns betwieii Norfolk ami O'Neill nnd argued the home patronage question with llii-M. The most of them carry full lines and few of them push home manu factured Kooilsf with tile energy or enthusl- ucm that they mlKht. On me contrary , many merchants allow the jobbers to load them Up with goods made In other stales , to thu in-Hied of their own manufacturers. The jobbers always say when approached n the subject that they handle the Koods that their customers , the retail merchants of the slate , want and that If there Is a demand Tor home-made Hoods they would just as soon carry them as not On the othir hand , the retail merchants say , "Well , why don't you KOI the Jobbers to iml In home-made goods and then we would handle them. " Mr. Holmes says that the home Industry theory Is like religion , every one believes in It , but a. Kood many do not practice It with as much enthusiasm as they mlKht. The merchants In that portion ot the Btate where sucar and chicory are pro duced are reporting a belter business than are the merchants In a Rood many other localities. The prowIliK of beets and chic ory plves employment to a much laincr popujallon than corn Krowlnt ? and the more people there are to he fed and provided foi the more business theru la for the retail merchants. Mrs. I'tmli and Mrs. McMurphay are ( UmomitrutliiK In leclutes before the Crete rtua'.u'iqna the values of home manufac tured food products and this Is one of the mithods ljy which the manufacturers hope to Increase'the consumption of their goods. SHOE MEN TALK IMUCES. DealersIn boots nnd shoes are calling at tention to the fact that while values on must all the Ki'c-ut staples are declining the market on shoes Is assuming a stronger tone. The hide market Is In ic-ally a HlrmiKcr position than It was a year ago , and to that fact must be ascribed any Ilrmness that may he developed In the market for the innnu'iicturt'il products of leather. The cry of scarcity was so alarm- ItiB last summer that all the reserves of both hides and leather In all parts of the world were brought out. Since that time the consumption of leather lias been In creased and the output has been decreased. It Is noteworthy as showing the Inherent statistical strength of leather that It has advanced two or three times within a shorl time , while all sorts and conditions of com modities In other lines of trade have been on the down grade.Tho recent advances in leather have compelled the shoo manu factures to pay some attention to the ques tion of raising shoo prices for the coming season. season.MOVEMENT MOVEMENT IN LIVE STOCK. lUislness at South Omaha shows unmis takable signs of Improvement that are most ( { ratifying to all who are Interested In the prosperity of the great live stock interests centered at that point. During the early portion of the year receipts of all kinds of live stock were very limited , owing to the fact that the failure of the corn crop In 1SU1 has compelled the runners of the Htate to market all their surplus , and In many cases their breeding stock us well. 1'or a tlmo the state was almost bare of live stock , and business In consequence was I1.1 avl'y , , low elll ) Ilt South Omaha. Since the failure of IMI a new crop lias been jjrown , and during the few months It Is Jusl commencing lo come forward to mar ket , with the result that receipts are now heavier , by considerable , than was the cast a year ago. Kor the six months of ine year now passed there were received at South Omaha 11.C.VJ cattle and 42m ) more In the mutter of hog receipts there has been a falling off for the six months past amounting to M.41I head , hut a month ago there was a dellclt of IOS.73I , showing that during the past thlrly days Micro has been u large gain , nmiahnt ut the present rate of Increase it will not bo long before issc can show gains In all kinds of live stock I'rlcos. as u matter of ( act , are very low for all kinds of live stock , hill probably no lower In proportion than other leading farm products. Aside from tlio low prices the romiltlcm of thu trade Is of a very satis factory character. N'UW YOIIIC (2i\Klt.VI : , MAIIKI3T. ( Ittnlfif IOIIH of flu ; Iny on Various COIIIIIIOdltlfN. NKW YOHK. TOM ) Ol'T OK COrilT. A St. Louis correspondent of the Chicago Ucconl relates the following story coming from a member ot the Nebraska delegation as an Illustration of how oratory was lost In the big convention ball : "General Cowln of the Nebraska delega tion says It reminds him of a case which came up for trial In a district court In the west. Ho was there and knows It Is true. The sheriff was an Ignorant fellow and the judge did not worry much about the quali fications of the Jury. An Imported attorney lushed In just as the jury was sworn and \\ent at the trial of the case. The battle was n vigorous one , and when the time came for argument the town lawyer began It with lervor. He talked five men to sleep , two were excused by the Judge to go and get , their horses shod , and the other four went over to the sheriff's ofllce to play poker. Only the twelfth seemed Interested , and the lawyer , who had been surprised at such court laxity , knew that he had to get that at tentive man , and so argued nt him alone , Ignoring the others. After some hours lie quit ; the other side said a word or two and the case rested. The city man next day was grieved to hear of an adverse verdict. He said he had expected different thltiBS from the man who had seemed to listen so attentlevly. Then It came out that the Interested Juror was dead and dumb. Cowln says the way the speakers here talk to the unhearlng as semblage Is a good deal like that attorney's vigorous address. "Casually , it may bo mentioned that he was the imported lawyer. " Old timers at the Illinois bar recall that gallant and genial Irishman , James Shields , lawyer and Jurist , but better known ns a United States senator , Ho was elected to the senate In ISIS , defeating his predecessor , Senator Hrcese , who was a candidate for re-election. Shields had distinguished himself as a bravo soldier In the Mexican war. and at the battle of Cerro Gordo he was shot through the lungs , the ball passing out at Ills back. His recovery was one of the marvels of the day. Shields' war record Is believed to have secured to him his triumph over IJreesc , who had a strong following and was generally esteemed. When the news of Shields' elec tion was received It caused considerable sur prise and many regrets were expressed over the defeat of Judge Dreesc. Omaha had only l.iiKI head , but lhat was more than any other market hnd. The mosl of the cattle here were corn fed beeves of good average tiuullly , nnd some of them were very prime. In addi tion to the fat cattle there wns n con siderable sprinkling of butchers' stock , feeders , etc. The market did not show much change as compared with yesterday , values belly ; Just about stationary on all grades. The demand was good nnd the market fairly active so that n reasonably early clearance was effected. Owing to the gooii quality of the catllo. Ihe sales showed up well on paper , $1.10 and JI.15 being paid for some , and ono bunch going as high as J4.3D , the best price so far this season. Only about live loads of cows nnil heifers were on sale , and while the offerings were small they were larger than on a good ninny days. The market was just about steady , with no new feature of any Im portance. Everything In ihe line of butchers' stock changed hands early. There were a few stackers and feeders In the yards which went at Just about steady prices. Some operators on the market are looking for a much heller demand for stock cattle after the weslern range season opens. Those who have canvassed the country , both east and west , lind that there arc no young cattle of any consequence on hand , and all feeders are wanting them. H Is predicted that there will be a large demand as soon us enough cattle of this class come to market. The catlle nmrket of the past week has been decidedly In buyers' favor. In the first place the demand has been good and all arrivals have met with ready sale at ruling prices. As to values , there has been a decided Improvement. No phenomenal advances have been scored on any one day , nut there has been a gradual upward ten dency , each day's market a little stronger than the day before. At the close of ihe week values on desirable grades of beef steers are fully lOt/UOo higher than at close of previous week. Representative sales : No. Av. I'r. No. Av. Pr.
