It represented the negro life of the south before the civil war , without being a lIlinStrel show. As the program stated "No attempt ae made at tninstreisy as it is popularly applied to the stage , the object being to represent In song and dance as nearly as possible the simplicity and ! eharacterieties of the negro and negro life in Ilgte land during the last halt century. " The innovation was a great success. The auslienee u-as tint as large as it mieht have le , but it aas thteliigeit and sympalhette. It was given an entertainment that wits marked by time higheat of inerit. arid. with what Is usually abeent In surh allaire. talent. It appreciated that the presentation was far above the medIocrity of anlatetlrish eflort and as an evidence of this it may be I stated that those who have bad the affair I in charge and the performers have been petitioned to repeat the ; rtormance to a I ' ide criele In One Of the local theaters. There are stock companies that would welcome - come such an invitatIon. The jubilee octet played the atar part of the esening. This band of singers. four mcmi and four women. all in "cuTer" as the rest of the performers were , rendered a number of selections with all the softness a4 harmony which Is'bssentlal to the happy moiodies of the liegro. The quartet was composed of Messrs A. M. Longweii. D. M. HaverlyV. . C. P. Cramer anti George Chaplin. Mies .lay Robinson. Nettle llaveriy. alld Nellie Ilaynea , and Mrs. A. M. Lontts cli. The women appeared to good advantage iii the program. Mrs. A. M Longwell. who appeared as Matnle Snowball. reminded one of May Irwin. Of much the same figure and appearance naturally , she has acquired much of that actress' famous negro dialect anti gesture. Her address. "Some of the Re- suits of Lincoln's Emancipation I'roelattia- tion. " made a hit , brought about in great measure by her delivery. Her costume was cppropriate. a ludicrous picture of the twentieth century colored girl. Mis * May Robinson furnished another feature of the program with her sInging. Her rendition of "The Leader of Company 13 , " and later of "Ben Bolt" in the Trilby farce in color. were most excellent , She appeared agaIn with three other young women - men , MIsses. Haverly. Mary David and 'effle David , in a number that was called "No Master Now to Interfere With the Favorite Game of Craps. " In this per- forrnance the dances of the quartet were very pretty and clever. The remaining numbers were ale very good. Master Alfred Longwell received great applause. Master and Mtss Phenx ! were two other youngsters to make hits with their dancing. Carl Haverly and George hopper were excellent in two recitations. MIss Haynes rendered a couple of solos well. Finally the program was rounded out by an inetrumental selection by Messrs. Miller and WOOd and the Innis brothers. The entertainment was set on the day that President Lincoln issued his proclamatiOn - tiOn of freedom. and was meant to represent the joy of the negroes over the good news. It had been planned by A. M. Longwell. who has been the recipient of unstinted praise Jar the product. 1ods'rn % 't.Ijz'n of _ % iierIn. Saturday night. Although the affair was of a military nature - ture , some of the spectators did not appear to be onto all the usages of the men of war. In fact , many of the couples devoted themselves - selves rather to the arts of love. Quite a number seized the opportunity of the lover's lanes about the fort and had a good time. The male portion of one such couple was cooing soothing words into the ears of his lady love , when be was startled by "Halt ! " "What's that ? " he yelled. "halt or I'll sheet. , " cried the sentinel out of the darkness. Mr. Lover was not next. and with a yell he disapeared into the dimness , leaving lila companion to the tender mercies of the enemy.
