On March 10 W. J. Johnson , a colored
porter on the tJnboo Pacific , returned to his
hOlfle at 305 South Eighteenth street after
the completion of one of his trips and die-
covered that the place had been robbed , and
among others things taken was a woman's
gold watch and chain and a aliotgui. The
matter was reported to the 1)011cc in both
cities , but no chow was obtaineJ until a few
days ago , when the watch was pawued at
one of the paw'neIlois on Broadway. It was
learned soon after that the shotgun was sold
to Feurhawken , a second hand dealer , Both

known as "Sugarlump , " The other was a

court yesterday , Blackburn had no defense
to make , but Burke was able to show that.

There was no lack of men when the hour
arrived yesterday for commoocing work on
the Indian creek excavations. The men
gathered at the city bulidlng , or at least
many of them din , in such numbers as to
aitnort block tue street , while as many more
reported at tue point. whore the work was to
be started , two and one-half miles from
Nineteenth street. City Rngineer Toetevin
followed the policy of the city administratIon
end gave employment to' the largest number
of men that could be worked profitably. The
pay rolls last night showed that over 200
men were at work , and the majority of them
Were heads of families.
ltow long the work vlil last is a quea
tion that Is anxiously aa'ked by the men ant-
ployed. The appropriation made by the
council for the completion of the work Is
only $4,000 , but as there is 11,00O avaiiabte
In the sewer fund it may be possible that the
council wili decide to expend $5,000 and coot-
llete the work thoroughly if the first ap
propriation Is not large ooough. There is
no question but that. it in neces3ary , for the
Present condition of things endangere the
lower system of the city. With the present
force at work the job wlI be finished In a

The Workingmen's Friendly club held a
brief meeting at the Court house bali last
night. Tile meeting wan brief , which was
gratifying to the members. Most of the
men who compose the club had been at vth-k
all day and were ready to go home as soon
ac the business of the evening had been die-
posed of.
Secretary Travis reported a communication
front the secretary of agriculture , conveying
th Information that the supply of free seed
had boon exhausted , and that the club could
not look for any relief from that source.
The club committee was inetructed to wait
upon the city councii anti see what could be
done toward securing seed for use in the
vacant lots.
The question of apportioning the garden
piots futniahed by reai estate owners was
taken up. Some of the Iota were sot apart
for members of the club who desired to use
them , and the secretary ws instructed to
allot other parcels as they should be called

A bench warrant was Lasued by Judge
Green , at Avoca yesterday for the arrest of
F. T. Scott , a butcher , who runs a shop at
Walnut. Scott was a witness in the case of
the state against Brock , cit trial at Avoca ,
and rofusad to appear in answer to the sum-
mono. It was learned that ho had come to
Cotucii Bluffa , and the offIcers followed him.
Scott reached this city on Saturday last
with an appetite and lS0 in cah. He
had recently taken his third post graduate

to roe what effect the treatment had wrought.

The case of Pomerpy against Sweet was
on trial before Judge Smith in the district
court yesterday , This is an action brought
by Pontoroy to recover $300 from Sweet.
The money WILO sent to Sweet as attorney for
a brother of the plaintiff , to be used in fur-
nichIng bonds for getting the man out of
jail. Sweet claims the amotiht as1attorney's
fees.

bank against H , J. Chambers and the same
plaintiff against W. A. Graybiil were stricken
from the docket on April 15. That record
haa been expunged anti the plaintiff given
time to show service on the defendants.
The suit of J. Breckett against Joint Limit ,
an action In replevin , has been dismissed at
plaintiff's casts.
The suit of J. B. Sutherlin against the

Thieves After ilicyches.
Burglars attempted to effect an en'crance
to P. C. Deyol's hardware store , Sunday
night. The rear door of the Main street
store , in which tile firm's supply of wheels
is kept , was tried , but withstood the assaults -
saults of the thuiovcs. They then effected an
entrance to the basolnent of the ifiroadway
store , but could not gain , access to the store
room proper. The hasomont was filled with
stoves , boilers , grindstones , anti articles of
that clasu , and the thieves wore compelled
to give it up as a bad job. It is oupposad
that the burglars were after the bicycle
stock of the firm.
