In the voiume of the jobbing trade just

; The feeling in the jobbing district appears -
pears to be one of general satiu'faetiolt over
S the prcEent condlticn of trade , which Is
fully ns good us could be expected under
the circumstances. Iteports from the coon-

I an encouraging character. The soil Is in

BOOMING IRON AND STFFM.
Local hardware men have been very much
Interciuteil In the combination of eastern
1 tee1 and iron men , , as It promises to work
very radical changes in the market. For
: some ceks Iron men have been a scarce
articin on the road and their visits have
! been few and far between , so that the job-
hers were Preluared for u'omething of the
I kind when the news ot the combination
came out. Some Idea of the possIbIlIties of
a the organization as an uulvancer of values
I unay be gained from the fact that ( luring
I the lutist year , up to within a few ( lays ago ,
. teei bIlIet , while iluctunting back and
forth had only achIeved an actual advance
, I of a little over $1 per ton. With the formation -
tion of the new combination it only re-
qtulred four ( lays for the market on steel
bilies to advance $4.
J In the opinion of the local iron men the
unparalleled success of the combination
among the naIl mills has done much to encourage -
courage iron and steel men to take the
same cQurso for advancing pricc. A year
J ago the lobbers here were selling nails for
$ l.2 per keg that bring 3.1.45 at the present
! time , which , together with the Increase oL
lurico on steel billets noted above. vlll give
some Idea of the PO5ibilItIe5 in the way
of advancIng prices. It I Intimated that
barbed 'vIre will be one of the flrst articles
that svlll feel the effects of the pool and an
ndvnnce of at least 25 per cent wIll not
be surprising.
Ld\'E STOCJ.C SITUATION.
. Perhaps the most satIsfactory feature of
the present business situatIon Is the state
I . the live stock market. That luslnes ,
c. + , - at the South Omaha yards should be light
Is an unfortunate thIng , as It tends to Fe-
turd the improvement of trade In Omaha ,
but that live stock values should be as
low as they are and the condition of the
trade very bad iii a much more serious
- affair. While tIn' taIling off In the volume
of business at South Omaha affects the
city only , the depressed state of the live
t stock market Is a misfortune that falls
heavily upon the producers of the country.
.c During the month just clOsed there were
received at South Omaha only 17,812 head of
cattle , which was the lightest run for the
month of March sInce ISS9. The largest
S business over done in the month in ques-
tlon was in IS3 , when 71,000 cattle nrrivNl
at the yards. Chicago showed a slight gain
, Itli conuparel with the previous year , but a
, heavy falling off as compared with the preceding -
. ceding five years , As to value.s , the market -
. , ket was just nbout $1 per OO lower than
the annual March average for the past
eighteen ycars. With the possibe ! excej-
tion of lSS9 fat cattle have sold on an aver-
1 age ( luring the past month lower than tiur-
, II lag Idnrch of any oilier year In the past
nineteen years at least , At the close of
i I the month prlccs on choice lueavy beeves
were the lowest that they have been at
this season in twenty-five years.
I In tlic present condition of the market
, I there Is nothing ( or the producer but loss
; and disappointment. Most , of the cattle
that have sold ( luring the past thirty ( lays
at the low prices noted above cost a good
dciii of money as feeders , that kind of cat-
tie selling way out of proportion to the price
of beef. After paying for their cattle the
feeder Is fortunate it he can figure out pay
for hla corn , even at the very low prices
, current. say nothing about getting any return -
turn for his labor and capital invested.
But leaving cattle and turning to the
hog market , the conditions are not much
more encouraging. During the month of
March just last there arrived at the South
: . Omaha yards & 5G97 hogs , which was the
lightest run for thut month since 1890. It
may be of Interest to note that while
there was a falling oft in the number of
head arriving , there was an enormous gain
I , Ifl the weight of the liege. That corn makes
, hogs wan never more fully exemplified than
, . ( luring the past month , when the hogs re-
j , celved here weighed on on average 2G1
IOtlfldI eaCh. as against 211 pounds for
tlio month of March , I89. Ever since the
first of the year hogs have averaged heavy
and In March the heaviest of any corre-
sjiondlng month since ISSI , showing the of-
feels of the abundance of cheap corn in
the country. If the Increase in the weight
Is taken into consideration It will ho easily
i,1iOvn that instead of there being a falling
off In the receipts there has been a gain
in pouti&ls it not In head.
An to the market , vaIuie. ' as In the case
of beeves have been very low. in fact , with
one eccption lower than ( luring any corresponding -
spending month of the past tt'n years. In
March , 1891 , the market ( iropped to a lower
point , but it only remained there a few
( layS , when it advanced ranidly , closing the
month 7t cents higher titan the present
market.
'I'ho unfavorable condition of the live stock
trade apnears to h due entirely to the very
limited glenmnd for the product. It seems
Iiuuposuihio to farce meat into consumption.
Even vltii thin inlucement of unusually low
- Prices. For some reason the public does not
take to local , preferring , apparently , something -
thing stIll cheaper , and until the consumption -
tion ii , greatly increaseil it hardly seems
reasonable to expect any material Improvement -
ment In the condition of the live stock
market , _ _ _ _ _ _ _
