One hundred and four years of life , with 100 of It spent In the activities of boyhood and manhood , In rugged health and In the full enjoyment of all his faculties , IE a bless ing vouchsafed 'to but few people In this world , Pleasant Taylor , who died at his homo In Taylor Station , near Oakland , this county , on Saturday night , waa one of the few who have pause I the century mark , He was born In Tennesceo In 1792 , and was the son of old Benjamin Taylor of colonial and revolutionary fame , and related to the pres ent reigning Taylcr family of Tennessee , He was married In 1829 , and came to Iowa In 1S)2 , In 1850 he took up his residence In Pottawattamlo county. All of his life ho was a man of affairs , active and progress ive. Ho acquired title to ono of the finest farms In the Mate. It comprises 4SO acres lying near the town of Taylor Station. For tl.o last half of the century ho has been one of the hardest working farmers In the county , as well as the mot progressive and prosperous. Ills residence In Iowa antedates all railroads and almost everything cite that has helped to make the nineteenth century the goldei age of the world. For years he was station agent at Taylor In the days of the stage codcnes , and was a prime mover In many of the enterprises that In early ilajs fixed public attention upon Council Bluffs. The funeral will occur today , and It will probably lie one of the largest In the history of the castei n part of the county. The old patriarch was the father of a faintly of live children , four of whom are living. The first was the veto of the settlement - ment made by the council of the claims of Gelslcr and Mrs. Peterson for n defective sidewalk , and the judiciary committee had recommended a settlement of their claims for $175 eatli. The council had concurred In the report. The mayor stated his rcison for vetoing the settlement to br "The record cf the act'on taken by the committee of the whole , and passed upon by the council In my absence , w2 ! ? Incormct and did not Interpret 1t terpret t the action taken by that body. In my judgment the Peterson case Is not en titled to a monclaiy consldr.itlon at the hards of this council , and should be tabled Indefinitely. The members had received some intimation that Hie mayor had prepared a veto message annulling the ordlnanc ? passed at the las' meeting , leluclns the larles of the city officers , and they ex pected that It would refer tci all the ofllccrs whose pay was cut. They were consequently not prepared lo receive n propos lion cutting their own meager pay. The silence that en sued d'd ' not la&t long. A motion was made to pass the ordinance over the veto. A faint hearted second was lieoid , and the roll call followed. Every member voted a > e , and the aldermen saved their own pay. Mrs. Lena Miller asko to have her prop erty , lot 1 , block G , Hang's extension , ex empted from taxation for the year 1S93. for the reason that she was unable to meet the expenses of living nnd pay her back taxes. The matter was referred to the judiciary committee. Alderman CreenEhleldg brought up the matter of removing the street car rails that had been laid to hold franchises or take advantage of contemplated Improvements In various parts , of the city , but which had never been used and only constituted a dan gerous obstruction to street tinfllc. He put his motion In the tJiapo of a icsolutlon direct ing the marshal to remove the pieces of track on North Elshth street , on Ninth avenue from Main street to Ninth street nnd on Upper Broadway , provided the p'teet car companies owning the tracks and responsible for their cons-tructlon did not remove them within a reasonable time. John II cli in , Ill-It FII to Crciit < ' it The neighborhood of Benton and Harmony streets was thrown Into a state of excitement at C o'clcck yesterday morning by the phileKj and screams of a man , which finally resolved themselves into cries of "murder" and "help. " Men and women In residences for a block around raised their windows and yelled "fire" in tones that aroused the fliemen In the nearest hos > e hou > four blocks away. A flro alarm was turned in fiom box 1C , on the corner of Benton and Haimony , and three companies responded. The ti cubic was located at 200 Harmony street. John Behm , who Is undergoing treat ment for cancer , Is temporarily plopping there. The disease is located in thp man's hip , and for weeks ho has been suffering the most excruciating pain. Yesterday morn ing , while trying to arise fiom bed , lie fell against a chair , striking on the die-eased portion tion of Ills body. The pain was so intense that ho became temporarily Insane , and , seiz ing the chair , he smashed a window leading out upon an upper porch and gave vent to the piercing shrieks that aroused the neigh borhood , while clinging to the railing of the porch. Kindly hands assisted the maddened suf- fcicr back to his bed and a physician was summoned. Opiates were administered to relieve lievo him and for a time he became quiet. But his agony had dethroned reason and dm Ing the day ho became BO violent that It was necessary to Bend him to St , Ber- nard's hospital.
