CHICAGO , Pel ) . 21. The uncertainty rc-
Rardlng the effect of the cold weather
upon winter wheat nnd the unwllllngneii
of traders to carry stocks over the holiday
created n rather heavy wheat mnrket to
day and prices at the close showed about
Uc decline. Corn nnd oat < were firmer
nnd advanced ' 4c and Uc respectively. Ptc-
\lilous ntsu made slight advances.
Wheat , whlrh closed weak jesterday ,
as even weaker when business com
menced this morning and that In the face
of condltlonH which called for steadiness at
the very least. Minneapolis nnd Duluth
receipts of Si ? cars were again smaller
than on the similar day of the week be
fore , notwithstanding the fact of the Min
neapolis mlltcrn having been pn > liiK May
prices , or within n smalt fraction of them ,
for a week past for track wheat , to Induce -
duce freer shipments from the country.
The continued cold weather caused some
apprehension nnd had a tendency to hold
nhort sellers In check nnd encouraged many
longs to hold onto their llnet. Hut the weak
ness In Liverpool ana advices from there
were evidence * of rapidly Increasing ship
ments from Argentine , which had a bear
ish Inlluencc nnd prices wc.ikmicd grad
ually. There was again a marked wcarclty
of nutslde orders and to this wan added
a disinclination among the local scalpers
to e t far from shore on account of to
morrow being a national holiday and that
consequently there would be no session
of the board after today until Monday.
May opened about 'Jc lower at C4J c , sold
up to from C5c to KJ'Jc , off to Ci ; c nnd ru-
nctcd to Clsc. The bulge from CIHo to
( rfG5Hc wns due to the later cables ,
which came blghcr , nnd to n few crop
damage dl ° patches ; but the strength wag
shortlived nnd thu price teen went back
to the starting point. The market ruled
< iulet but llrm during the last hour. May
selling at from G4c to GITsC , closing easy
at SIHc , sellers.
Corn was but slightly affected by wheat ,
receiving fair support , and smaller re
ceipts also contributed to the strength dls-
jilayed. May opened 'We lower at 2374c ,
Tint this loss was soon overcome , the lirlco
cloHlng at 30'sC.
Oats were quiet nnd uninteresting , but
lie-Id llrm In sympathy with corn. The
opening wns unclnnged at 2iJ4fc21c ; May
wild uu to il'.fcc and closed at that figure.
Provisions -were extremely quiet , but
the strength of the grain mnrketn nnd
thu fcmall run of hogs created u .steadiness
which was not disturbed by the small
business transacted. At thu close pork
was unchanged , while lard showed an ad
vance of Sc and ribs of 2c.
The estimates for Saturday arc : Wheat ,
40 car : corn. 323 cars ; o.iU , 132 cars ; hogs ,
31.000 bead.
Tomorrow being a holiday there will
\ > e no mnrket.

CATThE-About the same number of
cattle were in lite > anla as yesterday , l.K-5
heatl na against 1,033 on I'rli'ny of la t week.
Chicago nnd Kansas Oily reported only
About 4,000 head each , so that the total
supply on onto at nil the markets wns not
law.
The market on fat entile at this point wns
slow to open , the bujcrs being In no hurry
to Bet ilovvn to business , but when the Und.
Ing was once untlcr way the movement wns
reasonably active nnd the mo t of the entile
sold In good season The prices paid Old
not show much elmiiRO In the mnrket nt
compared with } ctcrtlny. While there were
1,01110 piotty decent corn fed cattle theie
was nothingprime. . . .
Cows and heifers have been coming In
pretty freely during the pist few days and
the buyers were not'quite so good bidders
this morning. The foot in that cow fluff
has been Rolling- very hlKh ut thle point , the
market having been forced up by the light
lun of last week With the nrrlvnU more
liberal there wns nn eas er feeling today
nnd In some cases the mnikct vvus a little
lower.
Thu feeling on stockprs nnd feeders was
also easier. Speculators hnvo been free
buyers during the past few davs nnd wore
nil loaded up pretty well and lint so nnxlouB
for cattle today. The receipts this week
liuve been running a llltlt- ahead of the
ctuntry demand and speculator" have found
It easier to buv than to pell. That feeders
have been holdingup sowell Is a surprise
to every ono In the trade. There have
been times when stock cattle have sold
higher than at Uio present time. In fact the
market In no higher than usual nt this time
of the > ear. but they anway up as
coin-pared wllh fat caltle. The demand nil
nver the countr has been active und buyora
have apparently paid very little attontlnn
