AA a broad generalization It would seem
perfectly safe to say that business Is dull.
Here nnd there an exceptional cno of
activity Is reported , but ns n rule bu.'lness
In nil Its branches Is decldcly quiet , both In
n retail nnd Jobbing wny. Tno cause of this
llfclessness In trade can not be all ascribed
to n diminished consumption resulting" from
want of purchnsclng power among the
people. The absence of any motive to
Induce , frco trading nppcnrs lo be ns much
nt the bottom of the present dullness ns
the scarcity of money nmong the people.
V The winter hns been mild nnd consumers
have been nblo to do with much less In the
wny ot merchandise than ordinarily , and
li
the ta'.k of hnrd times hns Induced every
one to prnctlco economy ns fnr ns possible.
The retailer In the country has not felt
like stocking up when there wns a possibil
ity that he might not be able to sell the
poods , nnd that has kept the Jobbing trade
reduced down to the lowest notch , On the
other hand the Jobber has not been a free
buyer , ns ho did not feel the
necessity for doing so as long ns
hlH customers were following n hand to
mouth policy. This moderate buying on the
part of the Jobbing trade has caused n good
deal of complaint among eastern manufac
turers , who In their turn have been unwll.-
Ing to buy material nnd pile up goodsfnr ,
! n mlvanco of the demand. .
At the sumo time the scarcity of money
In gcnernl clrcuntlon : has ? ind much to do
with the small volume of business doing
In nil parts or the country. It has been
said tli'it almost nil the Inrge Institutions
nre managed by credit man nt the present
time , nnd all doubtful orders arc rejected ,
-while the large ones nre scaled down.
Whltu that method of doing business may
be . eminently safe It precludes the possi
bility ot there being much Improvement.
Renewed confidence Is required to start the
ball to rolling.
SIGNS OF HETTER TIMES.
During the past week there has been a
Kood di > al of talk' nbout there being a
bolter feeling In business circles. In fact It
Is asserted In Fome quarters that there
lias been n sulilclent revival In confidence
to produce a noticeable though silent change
In business. The result ot the popular
government loan Is given as one of the
reasons for the Improved feeling , while the
near approach of spring Is cited ns a sulll-
.clo.it reason of Itseir. One thing Is certain ,
business Is fully us uood ns It has been nt
any time since the first of the year , and If
there has been no decided Improvement
thcro has certainly been no retrogression.
As compared with a year ago It Is safe to
say that there Is , if anything , a little
Improvement all along the line so far as
the jobbing trade' Is concerned. The In
crease lit the local bank clearings would
Rcom to Indicate n decided gain over a year
As to the different branches ot the Job
bing trade , the dry goods people report a
fair bmlnesr , with prospects encouraging
for , the spring trade.
Tli'e hardware trade Is fully as good nn
It was a year ago and Is holding up quite
well considering the general conditions
prevailing In this sect.'on. '
The grocery trade Is fair nnd the volume
of hus'lnefw Is well maintained ns compared
with previous weeks.
HOOT AND SHOE TRADE.
The boot and shoo trade shows no signs
of improvement. As n general thing , re
tailers complain or a continued light de
mand owing to the mild and comparatively
dry weather that has prevnlled up to within
U day or'wo In this section of the country.
' In the Jobbing" branch of the trade there if
not much of encouragement. The light re
tail trade nnd the lateness of the season
floes uway with the 'demand for winter
goods nnd the general situation in the coun
try is such ns to retard the movement of
spring goods. At .this time the' Jobbers
, ought to bo very busy sending out spring
1 goods , nnd while theynre shipping some ,
they are' by no means doing niiythinK like
what would be expected In an ordinary sea
son. The fact Is jobbers nre In no grertter
hurry to ship their goods than are retailers
to order until the spring- nearer at hand
nnd more Is known as to the probable future
course ol trade. The shoe trade has been
very backward all the season In all sec
tions of the country nnd the situation Is no
different here. Manufacturer ! ) In the east
have been complaining nbout the light or
ders , but they comfort themselves with the
If 'thought that there will come- time when
the trade can no longer put oft buying nnd
that business when It does come will be
Inrgo enough to mnke up tor much lost
time.
Country produce Is moving rnther slov/ly
nnd it is sometimes n question in the mlmls
of commission merchants what people In the
city live upon. The consumption of nil
kinds of produce appears 'to bo unusually
light , while the supply nt nearby points ,
within driving , distance of Omaha , Is large ,
HO that consumers and retail stores buy
largely direct from the farmers , thus cut-
lln down the snles of the wholesalers.
Complaints qome from nil quarters , with
out exception , ns to the poor collections.
Collections Imvo not been very good at any
time for months back , but there appears
to .bo a scarcity of money Just now that Is
making It Etlll worse. With the opening or
.spring n freer movement or produce Is pre
dicted nnd with that collections should Im
prove.

CHICAGO , Feb. 8. Wheat played a sec-
saw today. After recovering from early
loss , caused by disappointing cables , local
Influences controlled the market nlmost ex
clusively , Mny finally closing lo lower.
Corn nnd onts were affected by the late
weakness In wheat , and closed fractionally
lower , and provisions made slight reces
sions.
Wheat started moderately active , but the
strength' which wns expected 'to follow the
announcement cabled by the Liverpool Corn
Trade News yesterday that whenf and flour
In and afloat for Europe hntl decreased
10,000,000 bu. In January wns not forthcom
ing. The main reason for the weakness
with which this mnrket started was the
Indifference ot the Liverpool market to
yesterday's strength here , combined with
the report from Liverpool that the week's
shipments from Argentine amounted to
640,000 bu. , nnd the large receipts nt Min
neapolis nnd Duluth 511 cars. The bearish
features held sway In the market for half
an hour , nt the end of which time the
bulls commenced to give a fresh exhibi
tion of their fnlth In higher prices. The
opening prices of May wheat were from
G7ftc to G7Uc , with ono or two small trans
actions ns low as C7c. After a big busi
ness had been done nt around G74c , the
price gradually worked off to G7V4c again ,
and It was then that the bulls took n
fresh hold , nnd noon hnd the prices up to
GSc. The news from Argentine about ex
tensive dnmngc to the crop was again re
newed nnd there can be no longer nny
doubt of its substantial accuracy , and leaves
this country and Russia substantially the
only sources ot supply for the importing
countries/ The market remained all day
In its now normally feverish condition.
After touching CSVgc. the price tumbled
again to C7c as before , on some heavy sellIng -
Ing , supposed to bo for Armour , and wound
up at from G7'/gC to G'Hc , which shows a
losq of Ic per bu. for the day.
The business In corn was small , and the
throbs of the market were light and life
less. Mny opened fractionally lower at
from 304c ! to 30c , and kept Inside of from
SOVJc to 30c until about half an hour from
the close , when wheat had become weak.
It broke to from 30c to SOVfcc , and closed
at that , against 30e on the clay before.
Oats were nasler , Influenced by the
heaviness In wheat. May opened n Finnic
lower at from 21c to 2lH > c , sold at 21V4c , de
clined to 21c. and ended with sellers at
that price.
The provision market wns subjected to
something having much the appearance of
an organized raid. The opening prices Were at
a reduction from yesterday's closing' ' prices.
There were plenty of buyers at the decline ,
and. some Improvement followed , but near
the close the sellers again predominated ,
nnd brought prices back to a little under
the previous day's final figures. Mny pork
opened about Gc lower from $10.37ii down
to $10.32 , and after recovering to ? 10.47& ,
the close was at $10.32'the lowest price of
the day. Lard suffered a loss of EC nnd
ribs closed unchanged for the day.
Eitlmaled cars for Monday : Wheat 125
cars ; corn , ISO cars ; oats , 1S5 cars ; hogs ,
25.000 head.

been more bent upon securing the bonds than

Is made by those critics that no email part of

The general public will , however , take n
