"Wheat Up ,
THERE WAS SOME WEAKNESS EARLY

Clone of the
CHICAOO , Feb. 7. Sonio scnrn
from Liverpool on European clearances
brought about n radical change In wheat
today , nnd the market after opening with
nil the enr marks ot bear day , closed HO
higher. Corn nnd oats were helped by
wheat , nnd cloned ullghtly Stronger , but
provisions made material recessions. In
wheat there was less doing , the market
nt times rtillnR qulto slow , the rnngo for
the session bcltifr lc. There was more
disposition to make the long wheat , and
while the pressure was nt no time very
urgent . It exceeded the demand nnd
caused the early weakness , Thcro were
three quite bearish Items In the early news.
Liverpool was quoted V4 < 1 lower than at
the close of the day before ns cabled to
the -Hoard of Trade , but a private cable
gram , which presumably covered a later
hour at Liverpool than the public message ,
ald Id lower , owing to disappointing de
mand for spot wheat. The Minneapolis
nnd Duluth receipts were 581 cars against
Cll n. week ago , and IBS cara on the cor
responding day of a , year ago , and n mes-
lingo from Ban Francisco said that wheat
declined 2 per cent there yesterday be-
l cause of a falling off In the dumnnd and an
excellent promise for next seacon'a crop.
; Later accounts described the condition of
the- Argentine wheat an so bad that It
was heating In the holds of the vessels.
This relieved the trading from Its early
FJimoness and caused a lively scramble for
May wheat among these who an hour
earlier had been Betters nt 66Bc , and they
had to pay G7T4c for name of It shortly
after the hour of noon had been turned.
J The opening prices were % c lower at from
6Go to G7c. nnd during the first hour or so
U hnd worked down to CCHc. A private
cablegram from London saying wheat was
strong there , with indications toward ma
terially higher prices , contributed largely
to the recovery. In the last halt hour
the market became very strong. The price
for May jrot up to CSJ c near the close , and
although various rumors \vcro afloat , the
real reason for the spurt seemed to be
that New York sent heavy buying ordera
because of another batch of bullish statis
tics cabled this afternoon by the editor
of the Liverpool Corn Trndo News con
cerning European clearances. The closing
price for May was CSVsO bid. The cable
gram referred to was as follows :
LIVERPOOL , Feb. 7. To the Dally Trade
Bulletin , Chlcngo : Aggregate ) stocks of
flour nnd Wheat afloat for Europe , on Feb
ruary 1 , were 25,800,000 bu. , against 29.700,000
bu. on January 1 , and 25,000,000 bu. on Feb
ruary 1 , 1S95. Stocks * In tore In Europe ,
43,000,000 bu. , against CO.100,000 bu. on January
1 , and 49,100,000 bu. on February 1 , 1895.
Combined stocks decreased , 16,000,000 during
January. European requirements large.
Further decrease In supplies anticipated
during this month , nnd March. America
appears to hold a peculiarly dominant posi
tion.
tion.Corn was a llttlo weaker earlier In the
day , and sold oft Vic , but thcro was a later
rally , the receipts continued extremely
light and It was also helped by the last
rally In wheat. May opened about > 4c lower
nt SOVlc. and advanced to from SOHc to 30Uc
split. The market developed much strength
during the last hour , and May sold up to
30e. closing at that.
Trading In oats was limited. The feelIng -
Ing- was generally Ilrm In sympathy with
other gram markets , but prices were not
materially higher. May opened He lower
at from 2U4a to 2lc , sold up to from
21c to 21c , and closed at 21V&C bid.
The provision market was heavy , not
withstanding the afternoon bullishness of
wheat , and the receipts of hogs. May
pork started unchanged to 110.57 } * . reached
down to J10.37V4 at the close. May lard
opened unchanged at $5.80 , and dropped
gradually to $5.7214. closing nt the latter.
May ribs opened atrZllic lower at from
$5.40 to J5.42H , declined 'to $5.321 * and closed
at .that. 3-

CATTJ..13 The receipts of cattle were very
moderate today , but It took four figures to
express them , which was considerably bet
ter than yesterday. Them were 1,167 head ,
as against 9G4 yesterday and 1.133 on Friday
of last weak. The cold weather , or the
Detter demand , or something else , put a
llttlo more llfo Into the market , and the
trade to that extent , nt least , wai more
satisfactory tlmn for several days past.
The quality of the fnl cattle on sale was
above the average of the Week so far. nnd
that fact tuny have had something to do
with putting- little more life Into the
trade. The most of the buyers wanted n
few cattle , and , as the offerings seamed to
please them , they were not long In making
selections. As to values. It waat least
n , good , strong market , und such cattle us
were especially desirable brought better
prices. The best beeves here were good
enough to bring fl. the highest price paid
this week up to date. A considerable proportion -
portion of the cattle brought $3.7 S3.9.- .
Practically everything on sale changed
httnds early In the forenoon.
About the utnial supply of butrhcrV stock
was on enle , some fourteen or llfteen loads
of cows and heifers. The market opened
quite active , and most everything sold
early at ( Inn prices. Thcro were a few
pretty gxiod cuttle among the offerings ,
one bunch of l.SKi-lb. cows reaching $3.40.
und some lighter cuttle $3.00fl > 3.30. There
were nlso several bunches of heifers good
enough to bring $3 nnd above.
Only a few stackers and feeders v.-ore
on Rile , and the situation was not ma
terially changed as regards that class of
cattle. Representative sales :
