START Slmrii Ailvniiqc l-'ollownl lir > l"- crnl Coverliiff nnd Slronie Cn- McN Cnvc the Mnrkct ( ircnt Streiintli. CHICAGO , Feb. 5.-Whcat furnished a painful suttirlsc to the short element today. It went up 1V4C In the first hour's trading nnd notwithstanding the selling out of rriany millions of long wheat , closed ? ic higher than yesterday's closing prices. Corn nnd oats shows ECarccly any change , nnd pro vision ! ! closed generally n little higher. In wheat there was good buying at the nUirt by a prominent local trader , who the crowd had tried to follow of late , the eelllng evidently being led by New York nooin traders were generally short over night nnd rushed to cover early , resulting in the sharp advance. The market had Its first Impetus from the surprising strength of cables , Liverpool coming steady In the face of the 2c break on this side yester day , and WBB a surprise to . the trade There was also more Argentine news ant renewed talk of damage to the crop thcro by rain was also something of a factor Yesterday's cash business was no doubt something of n factor , too , the total foot ing to about 200,000 bu. , nnd a good demand was nlRo reported today. Exports were very fair nt 3IS.OOO bu. , of which 158,000 bu was In ( lour , nnd this added to the strength. Ban Frnncicco reported stocks nt that polnl reduced 1,139,000 lju. during January , nnd was taken as a bull factor. Among tin. bear InllucnceB were the continued liberal arrivals In the northwest and the modcratu weather conditions. Later In the day , the market was given further strength by the reports from Washington on the bond sub- Kcrlptlon. This news gave tbu bulls re newed confidence , but on the rally there was conHldorafole realizing , which caused a fair reaction to ( set In. but was only of short duration , ns IJradstreet's came In Hhowlng a reduction In the world's nvnll- nblo supply nf 3.900,000 bu. last week. For the same week laxt ycnr supplies were re duced 912,000 bu. Closing cables came VId higher , und were also productive of some strength. Jlny opened > ,4e higher nt from C7c to G7'/iC , rallied quickly to G8'f.c and re- uctetl to U7c , und advanced ngnln to GS',6e. ' During the last hour there was a big break , caused apparently by fice local real izing , nnd there was a rush by the lenders to slug It , and after touching 6S'&o it broke quickly to 6Cc und recovered to 67Uc. Heavy buying by n prominent broker started a good reaction rlnht at the close nnd us the bell sounded C7c was bid. Corn was firmer , largely In sympathy with wheat and the small local receipts. There waa not much speculation , but some shorts covered. May corn opened unchanged nl 30'4c , advanced steadily to 30yc , , and at noon was Sll&c. The market followed the break In wheat during the last hour , and May sold off to from SO'/lc to 30)ic , ppllt , closing at that price. ( Oats were very uninteresting from starl to finish. Fluctuations were narrow and Influenced entirely by the action of wheat. May opened practically unchanged at from 21 , io to 21c , sold nt 21V4c , declined to 21Uc , and closed at that price bid. i'rovlslons started rather weak , but on the decline packers bought liberally of May ribs , und that steadied the market. With the assistance of wheat the products ruled firm during the latter half of the session , and at the close pork showed an advance of V&u for the day , lard a decline of 2i c and ribs a gain of Gc. West , In the Paxton block , was entered Borne tlmo during the past few days by burglars and the safe rifled. The dis covery was not made until today , when the snfo was examined. It was found that a $5 bill , a counterfeit for a like amount and 100 nickels of the coinage of 18S3 , belonging to Heller , had been taken. The other apart- ner.ts In the safe had been gone through jut the burglars evidently found nothing that they considered of value. The safe , which Is burglar proof , Is always eft unlocked and consequently no difficulty tad been found In getting Into It. A furthci examination of the room developed the fact hat the burglars had pried open the office door after a very neat fashion , only a slight race showing where the chisel had been 'oiced ' In , H Is only a few days since that a valuable pair of fur gloves belonging to Mr. West wore stolen out of the office by a sneak thief. The hend of .ho slalra waa reached and a whispered consultation was held. Then slowly , step oy step , the door of the lighted room was approached. Suddenly a distinct suppressed nolsa was heard. It rippled and rattled from behind the closed door. "On , your life , keep still , " hissed Cox through his clenched teeth. " 'TIs the rou lette wheel. Wo have caught them In the * very act. " As was his prerogative he stepped to the fore. Putting his sturdy shoulder to the door he gave a mighty heave. The door collapsed with remarkable suddenness and so did Cox. Ho sprawled upon the floor nnd the rest of the squad was upon him. A scream was heard , a mighty crash and then a yell which tore up the atmosphere. A stream of coals beat down npsn tnc uouics of the prostrate guardians of the peace. "Murder ! Murder ! " cried out a woman's voice , while the refrain was taken up by a man who danced about the room with a foot In his hands. "Madam , " said Cox , when ho had picked himself up , "where Is the roulette wheel ? " "What roulette wheel ? " demanded the woman , who was Mrs. Lester. Cox looked around. Instead of a roulette wheel and tables and cards and other dev llsh Instruments of the tiger's lair , he found himself In very peaceful and Inoffensive sur roundings. The room was a neatly furnished sitting room , so far as could bo ascertained. "I thought I heard a roulette wheel. " Cox answered. "What was that noise ? " "There 'was no noise so far as I know , " answered Mrs. Lester. "Tho porter hero was pouring a bucketful of coal Into the Btovo and maybe that Is what you heard. I do believe that he has broken his toe , " she continued ns she gazed upon the porter , who was still nursing his foot. COX THEN THOUGHT. Cox did not say much , but he- thought a good deal when lie looked at his bravo , but now wilted companions. Ho made no further remark about a roulette wheel. He stated that'a mistake had been made , but Insisted on looking Into an adjoining room. Mrs. Lester tried to prevent him by saying that her sick daughter was there. Cox had a suspicion that there was a roulctta wheel somewhere. He went Into the room and found a young woman lying In bed. There Is a serious side to the story. The young woman , Miss Lester , had been seriously 111 for a long time. Frightened by the noise of the entranca and the sudden ap pearance of a stranger In her room , she fainted and It was only by using heroic reme dies that she was brought back to conscious * ness. She Is now in a critical condition. Cox returned to the hotel the day after the "raid" and apologized for the conduct of the officers. He also offered to pay for the brokeu door If nothing would bo said about the matter. "I would not take the money , " Bald Mrs. Lester. "I think the whole affair was dis graceful. I heard them coming up the stairs' ' , but thought It was my husband , who had gone to the store. I heard them whisper und then come to the dcor. Then came tha " crash. They certainly did "not need to use violence , because the door was not locked 'and they could have come In by turning the knob. Cox said ho had a warrant , hut he did not show me one and I don't believe that lie had any. " Patronize Home Industries Ily pnrcliiiHlnsf uootln niiidc nt the fol lowing NubriiHlm factories ) .
