LINCOLN , 111. , Feb. 1. The nnnio In the
McAfee murilcr case was n surprise to nil ,
oven to those who had been convinced of the
guilt ot Giles from the day of his arrest.
The tramp had maintained Ills Innocence
until Saturday , and many believed him ,
throwing the RUllt on a person from here ,
But a query from his sister , Mry. Hough ,
who had come from Ohio to attend his trial ,
brought forth a confession. This was re
peated In court , after which Giles told his
own story. ,
Ho claimed that a revelation from God
had commanded him to found n new eict ,
and that after reading the nook of Mormcn
he became convinced that this was the > doc
trine he sought. It was while he still had
thlo idea In his head tint ho came to this
vicinity. On the fatal Sabbath day he passed
the home ot the honest old farmer who fed
him the morning before. He paid that an
Irreslstable Impulse overcame him then and
io jumped over the fence and Bhot Mr , Afee
as he stood shaking the crumbs out ot the
table cloth.
The tracks ot Giles , who became better
known as the "Tennessee King , " were
closely followed to the city limits and his
worn satchel found beside them , but no trace
of the pistol could be found. In his con-
feeslon Giles told how ho had hid It In the
corn ( leld as he fled , and had carefully patted
down the earth to conceal Its hiding place.
Still claiming that he had fulfilled a mis
sion from God , he asked the court to give
him the death penalty In preference to 1m-
pr sonment. Judge Herdman , however , could
only give the sentence of the Jury , which
sentenced Joseph L. Giles to the penitentiary
for seventeen years.
