CHICAGO , Feb. 3. The whont market
monopolized most of the nttcntlon of the
trndfTS , nnd the trading was heavy. Bt.
Louis furnished one of the sencntlons of the
day by a jump of 3o In ns ninny minutes.
The feeling hero vfnn generally bullish , nnd
May wheat closed l&e. lilghcr tlmn Satur
day's close. The corn , oats and provisions
woie nil easier , but. made very fcllght
changes In value.
Wheat wns again very nervous today nnd
went up and down within n inngc of nearly
2c , but averngcd higher. The early ten
dency was downward , being Influenced by
the geiicrom fall of snow , which was re
garded as highly beneficial to wheat and by
the liberal recolptH In the northwest. There
was a good deal of Belling for a time , BOIDQ
of the big lenders hammering the maiket
and the support was of n reluctant and
hesitating character , prices gradually going
oft nearly Ic. llut the crowd soon got over
Its timidity ; Liverpool cables Bhowcd de
cided stn-ngth nnd said Hint stocks were
Bmitlt nnd lite demand uigcnt ; the world's
shipments last week were unofficially re
ported ns only 5,200,000 bu. , or 2,000ow > bu.
below the estimated weekly consumption ,
nnd the amount on ocean pahsnge showed
a ( Iccrenso of 320,000 bu. Thin quick y
changed the tone of trndc nnd the euily
( tellers made active efforts to get back
what they had sold. There wtis active
buying on long account , prices going un
rapidly under the competition , ns there wns
little for pale. Uutlng this period of the ner
vousness the viplble supply wns posted ,
showing n decrease of nearly 800,000 bu. ,
which was n great surprise nnd Increased
the excitement , May going to < > 8ic ! , or
nearly 2c advance , which was accomplished
in less than halt an hour. Some weakness
followed on lib oral lenllzlng. but the re
actions were fharp. Advices received In tlie
Intter session Indicated that the snow fall
had extended over only a small portion of
the winter wheat belt. May opened about
We lower , nt from CT c to GGfrc , fell to CRc.
up to GSVie , oft to G7UtC , then to C874c , nnd nt
noon WIIB use. The mnrket kept strong
during the last hour nnd Mny sold to G8J4e ,
but cased off n fraction , finally closing at
Corn wns plow and did not respond to the
upward action of wheat , the big Increase
In accummulntlons preventing any rally.
Opening quotations for May were nbout
He below Saturday's closing , at from 30-Jio
to 30c , nnd fluctuations were with a.c
range nil day , closing pi Ices being virtually
vnchnnged , irom 30fe to SOTto.
Onts were quiet nnd unlntere'stlng through
out , the wheat flurry having but llttlo eTfect.
May opened Uu lower , nt 21Uc , sold nt
21) i' , advanced gradually to 21c , nnd at
the close wns offered at from 21c to
SlVtC.
The provisions market was rather tame ,
nnd although receipts were quite moderate ,
the holders were apparently more Inclined
to sell than to buy more. Prices began to
eng from the start , but the decline for the
day , compared with Snturdav'a closing
prices , was trifling. Poik at the end of
the session showed a decline of lOc , lard a
decline of 2V&c and ribs unchanged.

CATTLE The week oj ) ncd with n fair
run of cattle ns compared with previous
weeks , 1,493 head being reported In the
yards , as against 856 on Monday of last
week. A considerable proportion of the
cattle on sale consisted of feeders anil
butchers' stock , and while there \\ero some
pretty fair dressed beef steers the offerings
were not larcc.
The market on fat steers was very Blow
to open nnd slow after it did open. No one
pcoms to want that kind of cnttlo nnd the
heavier they nre the poorer the demand ,
not only here , but nt all other mnrkcl
points. Cornfed steers are very low nl
Chicago and the buyers claim that they
have been too high hero ns compared with
eastern prices. The condition of the trnde
in the cast tnkea nil the snap and llfo out
of the mnrket nt this point.
About n quarter of the receipts was made
up of butchers' stock. Quito n good main
of the cows on mile were on the commonlsn
order nnd not overly desirable In the eyes
of the buyers. The demand for Hint class
of cnttlc wns good nnd the offerings were
taken In peed season. The prices paid were
fully steady , nnd in many cases ns much na
lOe higher , taking quality Into considera
tion. One three-load bunch of 870-lb. heifers
sold at $3.35.
Stackers nnd feeders were In good dc-
mnnd nnd the market strong. The offerings
met with quite ready sale. Itcpiuscntatlve
