CHICAGO , Jan. 31. This \vns n. day of
fcAllzIng on long wheat. Not only that ,
lint short so'.lcrs , who for n few ilays had
watched like a cat nt n inouscholo for
a move on the .part of the longs In the
above directions flooded the'ra.irkot with
tliclr offcrlnffs. The > prlco closed nt a de
cline for the day of ? Jc per 1m , Corn nnd
onts nre enoh a little lower In nympathy ,
and provisions moved up a little.
Wliont.was affected at the openlnR very
much ns It was at the same time on the
tfny before by heavy receipts at Minneapolis
nnd Dtiluth , while higher quotations from
Livorttool started Iny nt from C3 > < c to
CDc , ns compared with from 05&c to CTc
nt the close yesterday. After a further
decline to C5c the prlco becnn to re
cover n aln and rose In a very short time
to G0'c , or about ns high as It Rot on the
previous day's bulRC. The ndvnnce was
clilefly duo to the bullishness of the wheat
situation , ns set forth by the 'Liverpool
Corn Trade News , which estimates the
wants of the ImportlnK countries for the
whole season nt 48,0X,000 ) Im. , against avail
able supplies of 23C.000.6oo Im. , and says
that the deficiency of 72,000.000 bu. can only
tie mailu ( rood by reducing the nmount nllont
to Its lowest possible limit and using every
nvnllnb'.o buhel In Hussla nnd America.
The trading was nctlvo for nbout nn hour
and a hnlf tlurlng the nuctuatlons recorded
above nnd the market bad nnother rnncc
over the same ground , but after that It
qulclcd down for nn hour for want of nny-
thlng further of nn exciting character. The
prlco meantime bad worked down around
6Ec , and did not for some time get away
fiom between that and Go'Jic. ' Tenter the
market began to fcol the weight of the
sales which had been made nt around CGc
and by 12 o'clock It bad begun to wear a
very dejected appearance. In half an hour
Inter It bad declined to C3c sellers , or Hie
decline from the highest point It touched
earlier. The stocks at Minneapolis and
IuhiUi nre estimated to have Increased
000,000 bu. this week , nnd New York stock
to hnvo decreased 750,000 bu. The prevail
ing Impression with regard to the visible
supply for the week was that It might show
n small Increase , or at least a. very light
decrease , nnd probably the heavy operators
were Iniluenced by that In selling" ns freely
as they did. IHislness was very much
nmnllcr than on the previous days of the
week , nnd , na on the day before. It was
largely on the local nccount. The closing
figures were nt from PMC to G3V&C. practically
the lowest of the day.
The corn market followed the course of
* .he fluctuations In wheat , being strong early
nnd weak later In theclay. . The weather
Is making country roads very bad nnd
lighter receipts In the near future are ex
pected.
Iluslness In oats was quiet , nnd no new
features wore developed. Outside of a small
nmount of liquidation , trading was almost
at a standstill.
Provisions were irregular , opening firm
and aflcr a weak spell becoming strong
with closing prices moderately higher for
the day. The general Impression In the
nit was that soon after the opening the
Cudnby brokers were the chief bidders for
the product , hut nfter they had jollied It up
they became heavy sellers.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : wheat ,

HIDES AND TALLOW.
Tlio Chicago packer hldo market ! is on the
down Grade , according to the Shoe and -Leather
Review , but the brakes are'working and the
packers haven't lost control. The' decline so
far about represents the actual deterioration of
quality. The dlillculty of obtaining ready money
Is the moat powerful deterrent at' the present
time. The banks are hoarding their money to
back up their bids for the bond Issue , and there
will be Ilttlo relief until the successful .bids are
announced February 15. That enough money Is
being held back 'to undenvrlte the bond Issue
several times over Is universally believed so
that the moment It Is known whose bids are
accepted thena will be a pronounced relaxation
of the monetary' stringency and loans will be
easy to secure. It will bo remembered also
Hint a pronounced revival of confidence nnil busl-
IKSS activity followed tlio last bond lasue. It
Is , therefore , quite
natural to expect the mar-
ketii to continue slow nnd waiting until Febru
ary 13 , when , unices nil signs fall , there will
IMJ a general commercial revival. Two large
