If there lingers In the gray matter ot nny Individual the Idea that the bicycle fever Is on the wane the Chicago and New York cjcle shows should banish It. Eighty thou sand people viewed the Chicago show , o num ber which New York will exceed. The lat ter opened In Mittllson Square on the 13th Inst. , with nn attendance- 10,000 , and closed last night. As n society event It approached preached tbo horse show , Evening dress was the rulo. In a general way the New York show w s n repetition of thnt of Chicago. Several novelties were Introduced In the form of uheels radically differing from the common construction. The" companion side-seated bi cycle , recently described In The Dee , was nn exhibition. The most peculiar thing about the machine Is that ono person can ride It or a man and n woman can ride It , and if ono weighs 200 pounds nnd the other 110 It Is Just the same. The wheel Is balanced perfectly. It Is a much more pleasant ma chine than the tandem and Is superior to the ordinary "blcyclo built for two. " Another Interesting wheel was that of the dog-cart variety. It Is Illco the carrier that Is now so much In-uso for delivery purposes , but Inttoad of the arrangement for carrying the parcels there Is placed on the tricycle the box of a dog cart , with seat nicely up holstered. Other wheels of Interest , wcro those carryIng - Ing guns for ugo In riots , and the tandems , which are equipped with rifles , pistols , blan kets , tents and tent poles. The wheel on which Is the crank shaft that Increases the power fully ono-thlrd , It Is claimed , wag a IFVCII.J. ay mvans 01 ino mecnamsm tno presmiro of the foot Is effective during more than half the revolution of the crank shaft. The fost descends rather slowly , performing Its work , then returns quickly to the top of Its range to begin work anew. The rider 1 enabled to exert a more uniform , effective prcssuro through a greater angle of revolu tion of the crank shaft , and consequently to ascend steeper grades with the same gear or the same grades with a. hlghur gear than when on the ordinary blcyck The crank shaft Is attached to the pedals and the rear wheel. There was another wheel on exhibition which shows a departure from the style of cycles In- general use almost as revolutionary as wao the safety , which superceded the old- fashioned ordinary or high wheel. The makers of this are sanguine thnt they have the whejl of the future , and they are prepared to push the Idea with money. .The Idea of the trl- anguUr frame has been discussed for a long time , but this la the first wheel which has been put on the market. The wheel Is steered by turning the front wheel as In the ordinary safety , but the handle bars pass behind the rider and a little lo er than the seat , so that the rider grasps the handles by dropping his arms at his side. The seat Is placed on the apex of the triangle , and the claim Is made IJAXCI3VG. The fact that the rider will ell upright with head well tack la men tioned as another feature. It Is urcod for the new Invention that with the shouldorsr hsnds and pedals In n direct line , the muscles will work ns they do In a health lift. While the leg and foot press down on the pcdil , the shoulders arc thrown back , the head Is erect , and , with the hands pulling upwnrd on the bars , an Increased force can bo applied. An other virtue claimed for the Innovation U that an 84-gear can bo used with this wheel Just as easily a a GJ-gcar can be used on the present safely. A bicycle law'n mower , the Rra s culler taking the place of the front wheel , was n curiosity and Its Inventor Is a believer In It. Illcyclen were shown designed especially for United States mall carrier ! ) and there are fifty luggage-carrying devices. There was a woman cyclist's companion attached to the handle bar. Within Its re- cestos are thread , needles , snfslv nlns. imlr pins , soap , a mirror , comb and brush and the Indispensable powder rag or chamois. A machine was shown with n small wheel on the roar of the drivingwheel. . This Is designed for rough roads , but It looked cum bersome. A velocipede ambulance for mili tary service and nn arrangement by which n stretcher mar bo swung between four bi cycles Interested military men. Ono exhibitor showed what a perfect bi cycle stand an ordinary kitchen chair In verted makes. It Is a valuable hint as to winter storage of wheels. Any old chair with a tiuaro | back will do. Another military novelty from Franco was trl-blcyclc. The design Is of two front wheels only six Inches apart and ono driv ing wheel. The soldier may shoot without dismounting. THE MATTER OF WEIGHT. that fJ'le ? ' of ! 5" fact lhat the makers said they would run to heavier1 wheels this year , says the New York Tribune. It lo be ginning to look as If the prevailing Idea would be Just the reverse. The average cyclist wants his wheel Juit as light In weight as It can possibly bo made with safety. . It la fair to say th t there will to more eighteen and twenty pound wheels seen on the road than was the case last year In spite of yarns to the contrary. In speaking about wheels recently the ' expert for ono' of the largest houses In the country said : " "Personally , I do not favor light wheels for IIRO lull tlin nfwirtln . . .nti. ! . . . . .H.I Y suppose that we will liavo to supply them. If I had my way I would not guarantee a wheel which weighed less than twenty-two pounds , for road use I ninan. The more sensible of the ' ' 'scorchers' who Insist upon having light wheels , take the precaution to have the racing tlre taken off and road tires substituted. I don't place so much consequence quence on the weight of the rider as some people , and when I am selling a wheel to a man I would as soon have a 200 pound man ride It as a ISO pound man. The lighter man hap , as a general thing , more muscular force and ho puts a great deal more 'steam' In the pedals than a 200 pound man would , and that la where the real strain come on the pedals , or , rather , cranks. Wo have had very little trouble with the wheels which we have sold to extremely heavy men. " HE TOOK A HEADER. To chronicle all the hair-raising escapes of coasting bicyclists from becoming a horrible example to unborn generations would occupy a column as long as the valuable articles an Napoleon In a current magazine If col lected. Hut occasionally one stands out from the rest that Is worthy of history. Such Is the tale of the young man who was coastIng - Ing at an ungovernable rate of speid down one of the precipitous streets of Springfield , Mass. When he was enjoying that InterestIng - Ing sensation of the mingling of your un moored vitals which Is produced by a rapidly falling elevator or a coast on a very steep hill he looked up to see a slowly moving lumber team start across a street just In front , loaded with some sixteen furlongs of lumber. He saw Immediately there was a cholco of but two things he must either be scattered up against those four-Inch Joists or Invite a squirmy death on the pickets of a sharp-pointed fence on the side by running into uio stuewaiic. tic cnose ino latter. Fortunately when his wheel struck the curbing he cleared the picket fence on the second or third bound. He passed on through spasa and a basement window , and finally , landed on a supper table , around which the family was gathered , engaged in the good-old American custom of eating. ,1'Why , good evening , " said the young man ; "this Is Indeed a surprise" or words to that-effect "I never wasiserved In this man ner before. " Then he borrowed a basket from his kind host and wont out to gather up his bicycle. bicycle.THE THE HOME RUN. Two residents of Berkeley , Oil. , have con structed a platform of rollers on which bi cycles may bo worked without moving an Inch. The apparatus Is very simple. It con- slt'ts ' of two sets of hardwood rollers , firmly secured from breaking away. The rollers revolve - volvo la sets of three on a stout wooden frame. A. dial with pointers thereon Is mid way between the two ends of the framo. The rollers are four Inches in diameter , each roller being two and one-half foot long. The front wheel of the bicycle Is ptoced on top of ono ot these narrow rollers , having there with slight but sufficient contact. The hind wheel restfl on two rollers between the outer circumferences , which Is a distance of five and one-ihalf Inches. This brings the lower part of the rim of the hind wheel about one Inch below the level of the upper edge of the rollers. The purpose In having two rollers quite closa together with the Inter vening epace Is to prevent the bicycle from running forward. Thla devlco Is fully effect ive when conjoined with the revolution" the rollers , which constitute a slippery track. To make certain thqt the rollers revolve uniformly the rollers upon which the front wheel of the bicycle rests and the next roller to It , distant thirty-seven and one-hidf Inches , arc coupled with a strong round rubber band. The six rollers provide for two riders per forming simultaneously , one at each end of the frame. This Is about all there Is to the machine , wjth the exception of the gear , which Is connected with the revolving roller ami Tnnvnq Mm Indlrtntnca s\n Ilirtlint DUOP THEIR " ' " , "I'S. Why should the English manufacturers of bicycles Indulge In uuch eccentric orthora ( > phy as that Involved In spelling tire "tyre ? " That Is the way the word appears In the English catalogues In 'tho present year of grace. And a peculiar thing- about thess "tyres" Is that. In the case of some con cerns at any rate , they are put down as an "extra. " Perhaps that Is not true of all kinds of "tyres , " for any sort of blcyclo must bo equipped with "tyres" of eomo kind , but It la true of pneumatic "tyres. " Ameri cana will b2 astonished , too , to learn that a pair of pneumatic "tyres" cost In some places on the other side the neat sum of 5. Now the highest priced tires hero do not cost more than Jlor | tG a pair , and It IP difficult to understand why the price should be so much higher In England. Ulcycles general/ ! are dearer there. It la true , but there Is not such a wide difference as In tha case of "tires" and "tyres. The Twentieth ptrcet boulevard also has many supporters. Wo hope , however , that regardless of what course they decide upon they will not allow the same persons to Oc > the handicapping as did laft year. The poor handicapping of last year's race was the only thing that detracted from the Interest In the least. The Gate City Cycle company Is the new est firm to start In the business. Of course some of the present records could be pro duced , but they have been kept In such a way that no ono would care to' vouch for , their genuineness with tlie possible exception of some road records which are In possession of the Century Iload club.
