' 11 n Pf , 'G TITE OMAITA DAILY J1ET5 : SATURDAY , JANUARY 2,1 , 1800. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Trading In Wheat Yesterday Was Rather Small , EARLY FLUCTUATIONS WERE LIMITED Corn AVim ( Inlet nnil Aii > cnrc < l In All < lic A lMlnnce f It CSol from , When I. CHICAGO , Jnn. Zl The tradlpg In wheat today wns rather Btrthll nnd fluctuations nnr- rnw until about hnlf nn hour from the close , when big covering orders mused a Jump of lV4c , May closing thnt much higher. Corn nml , ont were upheld by wheat nnd closed 1 Me higher cnch , und provisions closed with cllghl gains. Wheat , during the morning , wan quite ft nervous , though the fluctuations up to Tioon had been only about ' 4c. There were n good mnny disquieting rumors afloat con' corning the gravity of the political compli cations growing out of the reported treaty between KusiJa and Turkey , nnd nn effort A\n mndc to cnato Bomcthlng of a war pcare , but the fact thnt consols were higher than yesterday , nnd as Liverpool "honed but little advancs , thcpo rumors fell tint. Then a cold wave was said to bo working Its way Into the southwest nnd the winter Wheat wns Bald to bo In danger. Another rumor O' was started thnt foreigners were heavy buy ers nt the oeaboard and that Pardrldgo was Inking the long side of the market , having fully covered his short lino. Uut the under- 1 current was BO weak that nil this did not prevent a general weakening. There wan llttlo disposition to take the long side , and the buying seemed largely from shorts to Rictiru prolUa The moderate business up to uliottt 12JO o'clock was followed by twenty minutes of considerable excitement and a lively advance In that time of l'4c. May opened slightly lower at from C2Hc to G2Hc , advanced to from 02)40 to ( B c , and after thnt nnd up to 12 30 o'clock It had many fluctuation * from 02\Sc \ ( o GS'.c Then It ro e rapidly from around C./4c to 01c. No end ot theories were advanced to account for the latter Jump. New York was said to have lieavy buying orders here , nnd a largo but Indcllnlto number of boat loads were said to lia\o heun taken nt seaboard for export. The truth seemed to be that pome of the recent heaviest trading hears hud been bujlng wheat quietly all the forenoon nnd the scalpIng - Ing crowd had got short. August Urossoau , iv ho had stood pat nil forenoon on a short line of over 1,000,000 bu , put brokers In the pit to buy It In ju < al.ns the mniket started on Its bulge , nnd that touched off the Intent bull feeling , which sent the price up with a whirl to b4Vc before the close The latter price wns from GU&c lo fJI'Jc. The transac tions In the last twenty minutes of the ses- Klon were simply enormous , and probably averaged 1,000,000 bu. during Vv cry minute of that time. Corn was quiet nnd appeared to need nil the assistance H got from wheat. May opened at 29'c bid , dropped to CSViC , nnd on the final bulge In wheat wound up at 29lc. The trade wns light nnd the pit was prac tically dpocrtcd during the greater part of the seR-slon. i In oats there was but little activity , nnd the market was practically featureless with itho range of price * narrow. May opened % c higher at 205iC ! , Bold at SO'/ic , advanced to * _ _ / SOViC and c'osed ' there. iV" ? * * . The ptovlblon market was strong nnd ac- tlvo for a few minutes at the beginning of j > the bcsilon , but listless nnd heavv thore- , nftor , although closing nt u , sbnde over ye-s- ' -terday's closing quotations. Pork roe lOc -at the start nnd clo = cd with a net gain for the day of 2' c. Lard rose Go and rested at the n.imo price nn on the day before. Itlbs advanced lOc and retained Cc of that up to the clore. Estimates for Saturday : Wheat , G3 cars ; corn. 455 cars ; oats , 20u cars ; hogs , 10,000 liencl. NEW YORK , Jan 24 The wheat market cn- Jojed the two extremes of movement today , the morning cession being without doubt the dullest In three weeks , nnd the late of lei-noon was the most active. There -was a jump in prices then that started the trade The l > ulk of the day's trans actions was done In the last hour , when the shorts , frightened by reports of large export bus- im > sd and news that Great Itillnln's ll > lng squadron had been ordered to the Mediterranean , tumbled Into the pit In a UeieB endeavor to buy back thwheat they had sold with a free hand during the morning. Mny wheat Jumped fiom 6Jiu ! to 71 1-Ko In three-quarters of nn hour , and closed la higher than lat night. Certain rumors which leaked out among the denl'rs in cash wheat In New Yoik todiy make II appear that an attempt It being made tel squeeze the uliorts In Ihc rebtuary nnd March options , nnd that negotiations looking toward the absorption of all the. available conlract wheat nt New York , about 2000000 bu. ; Including No B red , No. 1 nortiern and No 2 hard , have been quietly eomgr on for some time past , right under the none of the trade. It came to Helit today that practically thn whole stock of No. 2 red. which lias been held by rowlor brotliern. had been bought up In the past two dnss , ostensibly for cxpoit or mill ing , but a ccoi ding to rumor , for Mclntjre S. This flnn , it Is alleged , has recently been a heavy buyer of cash contract wheit here , atone ono llmo laklng , It Is" said , a block of 400.000 bu. No. 1 northern wheat. This lias reached the cars ot the trade , from time to lime , as export dealings , and no one had a suspicion that any house was qulelly preparing a bomb In the slmpo of A corner In February und March. The fmall Block of conlract supplies In New York nt this time makes It n compara tively ( UBy mailer to establish a earner , aa water wa > s will not bo open until late In April and to bring grain here from the west by rail at the present rates would be on bed as pajlng- Ihe advance In a corner.
