CHICAGO , Jnn. 22. Whent advanced Zc
today nnd closed with the gain held except
Uc. Corn nnd oats were strong In sympa
thy nnd closed from > 4o to ! ic higher re
spectively. Provisions , on the contrary , were
weak nnd closed nt a loss of lOc In pork
nnd Inrd and EC In ribs.
From the start the wheat trade was tin-
mlstnkulily bullish nnd May , which closed
yesterday nt from GlUc to Cl'.ic ' , stnrted
nominally nt Ol'/ic. There wns practically
no wheat for sale at this price , however ,
and from the opening It wns changing hands
In 23,000 , 60,000 nnd 100,000-bu. chunks at
B2'ic. ' The feeling wns In sharp contrast
with .that which prevailed nt the close yes
terday. After the trade had Imil n night's
reflection It was unable-to discover why It
hml been so panicky , nnd the misplelon was
raised that they were the victims of n. raid
designed to shako out the longa nnil buy
cheap wheat , This conviction , with the
fact thnt there wna no bcttr iinw ? , but , on
the contrary , much that was strongly bull-
I h , caused n rtifh on the part of there
who had Bold out yesterday to relnHtnlo
themselves on the long side , but there Wits
llltlu for pale , nnd the nellve competition
neil the market booming. Shorts took
fright nnd there wns n stonily ndvnnco of
2c from yesterday's close. The heavy realiz
ing which followed caused porno break. Ca
bles opened lower , but iheie was consider
able strength developed Inter. The north
western receipts were light-only 2G3 curs
nnd primary deliveries wore ale small.
St. Louis reported 230.WO bu , sold thcto toRo
by river to Now Orleans , and the Hour
nslncss was leportcd active. The olllclnl
report of the Argentina exports for ISO. " >
Phawcd that with the HID nil amount left
over the total wn about 38XKK)0 ( ) ( ) bu , , and
thnt those of ISM will rot exceed thnl. Thu
Washington crop bureau. In Its January
( statement , makes n shrlnkiigo In the Eng
lish whent crop of 22,700,000 bu. , while Rus
sia , has 4:1,467,000 : bu. less Of wheat than lust
year. There wns also a rumor thnt the
government would open negotiations with
Spain for the purchnpo of Cuba , which
would open a big Hour market for America ,
nnd this probably had pome effect. May
wheat opened nt ClHc , sold up steadily to
< J2Jic off lo filmic nnd nt noon wns CXc , or
lc higher than It closed last night. The
market was quiet but nervous during the
Inal hour , .May felling to G2c and back to
C2c nnd G3c split , finally closing nt C3c.
The covering by shorts was Immense.
Corn wns strong , taking Its strength from
wheat , nnd scored a good ndvnncc before
the middle of the day. Mav opened Vic
higher at 2CUc nnd rosu lo from 2Sic : ) to
29T4C. following the fluctuations of the wheat
market , nnd closed nt 23'fto. ' sellers , for
May , nnd from S04c ! to SO'iic bid for July.
A firmer feeling prevniled In oats nnd
prices were higher. Sympathy with wheat
and corn to some extent wns the cause of
the advance , yet good short buying was
the main backing of the strength. May
opened He higher at from 20Uc to 20fic ,
sold up to from 20 > 6c to 2 94c , declined to
from 20V.c { to 2oy8c. closing at that.
Provisions were quieter than for some
time past and nn easier feeling prevniled.
The opening was weak , Mny pork opening
12Uc lower than yesterday's close at from
$10.W > to $1055. Hog receipts wore liberal ,
nnd Ihls with tho. Orange Judd Farmer re
port showing that there Is no scarcity of
hcgs In the country caused nn easy feeling ,
but the strength In whent prevented any
decided drop. May pork opened weak and
J2V4c lower nt from $10.50 to $10.55. milled to
$10.70' ' nnd closed steady nt $10.52'lard
opened 7'ic lower nt from $5.9214 "to $3.93 ,
rallied to $5.9716 and cloaul at J5.00. May
ribs started Be lower at from $ . > .27 > / < . to
$5.30 , advanced to $3.C5 nnd became quite
weak near the end. closing nt } 5.27'A Uusl-
ness wns quite nctlve In the last half hour.

CATTLE The receipts of cattle were
liberal , over 100 loadu lining on sale. The
bulk , consisted of butcher stock , feeders
and stock cattle.
Corn fed steers suitable for the dressed
bacf trade were In light supply , but ad
vices from other markets were not en
couraging , nnd the market was caster In
spite of the fact thnt omy a lew cattle
were offered for sale. The buyers took what
cattle there were , and though the trade was
not active , nbout everything wns void In
good season. The most of the cattle were
only common to fnlr. but there were n few
of the best seen hero In some time , and ns
high ns $1.20 wns paid for them.
There were nbout twenty-live lends of
cows nnd heifers on sale , the offerings of
thnt kind of cattle being a little moro lib
eral than on n good many days of latu.
The market was Inclined to be slow at n
decline of about lOc , and the whole fore
noon was consumed In effecting n clearance.
The demand wns good , but salesmen wire
slow to make the concession which buyers
thought they were entitled to , In view of the
decline at other points.
Stockcrs nnd feeders were In larger sup
ply than usual nnd as the demand wns
only fair the market broke B'fflOc. Not only
were feeders lower , but the light stackers ,
which have been selling at such strong
prices all along , also felt the slump In
values. The fact Is cattle of that descrip
tion have been coming In n little too fast
for the demand during the past few days.
