THE OMAHA DAILY BEljh SUNDAY , .TAKTtTAttY 10 , 1800. = t ANOTHER VERY DDLl WEEK Qulot Held Pnll Sway in the Society Oirclos , BF.U.ES AND SWELLS FIND LITTLE TO DO Mont of Tlipin Hn l to Pnt In Their Time nt ICciinliiKtnnn , rrlth Cnr l nnil HIIIIIPH IVw Minor Noted. Ifftd It not been for the meetings of the yarlouj card and dancing clubs , sc-vcra on ] rab1e card partlcx and Kensingtons , the week would have been a very dull one for oclcty pcopla. However , every ono seems glad for a. llttlo rest and there In not as much complaining ni ono would nnturnlly expect. Many have taken advantage of the duo weather to pay up their call ; . There Is llttlo promise of gayety this week for , with the exception of the Claikc-Det wllor wedding and reception on Thursday evening and several minor affairs , tbero I nothing particularly attractive on the socla calendar. The Ingcnuo I do wish the men who cal to sco me wouldn't bring me candy. It's so embarrassing. I don't know ju.it what to do with It , whether to open It , offer them sonio and cat some myself , or whether jus to thank thorn and lay the sweets aside. The Engaged Girl Bless mo , what an In nocent ! My dear child , you might as wel understand first as last that men aren'i gifted with the fastidious disposition a woman has. I never luicw a man In my life who wasn't ns fond of candy as a school girl Don't you hesitate to offer bonbons to them They expect you to when they bring thorn to you and will probably think you stingy If you don't allow them to gobble up more than half. The Ingenue But It's go awfully "Human.1 I hate to see anybody anybody that Is a s person I care especially about champing down cream chocolates and nougats. The Engaged Crl ! That's a phase ol masculine character you'll have to get used to. A man's stomach Is his first considera tion. After that ha'll deign to look after his heirt. You'll never find a' man sj much In love that ho Is indifferent to eata bles. Just watch the men at a > reception or any feeding function. My , don't they hustle for the dining room as soon as they've paid their respects to their hostess. The Ingenue Yes , and they spend most ol the evening there. I've often noticed how they settle a girl with a bit of sweet cake and an Ice and then lese themselves for ages. Off In t corner somewhere , I suppose , devouring substantial. The Engaged Girl Of course. The prettiest girl on the glebe Isn't as attractive to a man as a plato of falad and a glass ol champagne. The Ingenue Is Jack that way ? The Engaged Girl Jack's a man ; Isn't that answer enough ? The Ingenue Well , then , I shouldn't think you'd care a mlto about him. Do you mean to say that your fiance would rathpr cat than make love ? The Engaged Girl Exactly. Indeed , I've known Jack to break up the most romantic Bltrallons at the possibility of a supper room raid. And last winter when I used1 to lunch down town with him I'd nibble away on the edges of dishes with so much happiness at being In his company that the llttlo I did eat. might have been sawdust or stones for all I knew ; but Jackl Nothing of the sort In his methods. He'd go through a whole menji with the greatest relish and criticise the dlJhes , take second1 helps to thlngz , and thlo before the eyes of the girl ho profos3ed to care for more than anything In the world ! The Ingenue Then a man never loses his appetite with his heart ? The Engaged Girl Never. Mr. nnil MI-H. 3ut h n Eutertiiln. A very enjoy'libyi entertainment , not so long an to bo tlro'sonift , and good enough to have been Iongqrtlw4 given by the Crelghton Theater School Aot Elocution and Dramatic Art last night atho , | Crelghton. It was the first public cxtyWUpn of the pupil * ot Mr. Frank l.c.i Short , who would seem , In the light of the performance , to bo an efficient Instructor no weO'ift a capable and versatile actor. The wltddm of opening nn evening of this kind vrMt to ambitious a flight ns "Tho Taming pf , . ho Shrew" may bo ques tioned , and It la. only fair to Mr. Shorl to cay that the song and lljnco which ho executed ' without doffing' ' Uo gear of Pctrucblo was done against his betlcr , Judgment In response to a more or loss general demand. The re mainder of the bill , however , WAS carried out In a manner worthy of high praise. In dealing critically with amateur players , the commentator , besides the many less serious dlRlcultloj which beset his path way , Is often restrained by prudential motives from singling out special performers for morn than ordinary laudation. No fear ot Je-aloUs wrath , however , should prevent tbo expression ot ono'o satisfaction with the thoroughly admirable work of the two leading ladles In the llttlo sketch called "Ropcbcrry Shrub , See. " Mr ? . Mathoson Is an unfailing favorite and has never dona herself fuller Justice linn In the present Instance , while Mrs. Wheeler , In making her flr t appearance upon the local stage , achieved a decided and well-merited success as the rheumatic Sarah Jane. Her make-up could not hove been Improved , her broken and piping speech , her stiff and painful walk , her performance In Its entirety , was well conceived and con sistently executed. So excellent nn Imper- Eonatlon Is not looked for In amateur theatricals , and Is not found so often as might bo wished , oven In the offerings of high-class profcsstoanls. The email parts wore creditably handled by Mls Squires and Mr. Morchouse , and Mr. Nordcn , In hlo place. In the orcbertra , was made to play nn Involuntary though animated role by the too vigorous discharge of < the cork. In Mr. Short's clever burlesque "Incon gruities , " which colsod the entertainment , the author-actor made a good Impression as "Tho Leading Man. " and Introduced nn Im itation of Albert Chovaller In a coster song , which was kindly received. Another surprise was the performance In this piece of Mlsa M'ibcl Balcombo , who played a difficult role so well and with such commendable freedom from undue exaggeration that It lei hard to believe her a noviceMr. . Sharp looked the 13nglle > h man servant , and his bit of business with the tray was more eloquent that words. Mr. Short hasr-made a good showing In this , the first fruit of his efforts toward the establishment of a permanent school of elocution and stage-craft. Ho has gained friends by the evident sincerity of his pur pose and by the ccceptable quality of the rcimlts attained , and his future movements will be watched with Interest.
