The ronuon for the sudden change Is no

lluslnoss men nro generally agreed tlm
much of the present depression In this sec

prevailing for mojf all lines of country pro
luce. The sale of tlio farm crops grown
In 1S9& has. brought back such n small vol

products which nrc higher than In April

WITH THE JOIiniNG TRADE.
In the Jobbing there hns been very little
change during the past wrck. In fart th
Rltuatlon remains practically as detailed a
"week ngo. There Is a fair trade In mos
nil llnea In fact , most houses report Ihn
they are- doing fullv ns much ns could rea
ponably be expected under the present con
dltlons. There Is , however , no great life
to business , trade partaking largely of the
hum-drum character , without material varl
atlon from day to day. Collections , a
might be anticipated , arc not good , bu
they are holding up as well us nnv ono coul <
expect nt a time when there Is so little
money In the country.
IN A DUY GOODS WAY.
Dry'Boods people report that n few nprlns
orders nro bolnp tnken. but that merchants
tvlll not buy very freely yet. The wlnte
la now well advanced nnd retailers hnvo re
.ducetl stocks to n point rendering Eortlni ,
up orders an ab elute necessity. Quito n
Rood ninny orders of that character nre nr
rlvlntt , and though small ns a rule , they
count up to a considerable ll.mire. Buslncs.
of that character Is not what might have
been expected had the weather been more
Severe , The very mild wcnther 'has en
nblcd consumers to ilo without many nrtlclc
In the line of heavy winter goods that wouli
havebeen an absolute necessity during mos
vylnters In this latitude.
The , market on ftnple lines has not shown
any material chnnge , values remaining
about where they were a week ; ngo.
HAHDWAnE MEN FEEI , BETTER.
"Hardware jobbers nro talking In nn en
couraelng * manner about the condition o
trade In their line. Utflnests has now en
tirely recovered from the lull Incident to
the turnlnc of the year nnd trade has'once
more settled down Into tlio regular chan
nels. The traveling men nrc all out on the
road onccmor < ! and nre giving a good ac
count of themselves. Quite a good rrmnj
orders are being Font In , nnd , taken alto
gether , trade In the hardware line Is very
fair. The market has remained about
steady on most lines. Plain and barbec
wire is a little easier.
HOOTS AND SHOES.
There IB no great , pnnp to the trade In f'oot-
vxenr. The weather has been too mild all
winter nnd consumer.- ) have taken full nil-
vantage of that fact to buy Just as llttlo ns
possible. The jobbery nre getting In their
new stocks of spring goods nnd the styles
are geiern'ly considered ns very attractive.
OROCEnY TRADE UNCHANGED.
The volume of business doing In the gro
cery line Is about the fame ni noted a week
ago. there having been no material change
during the period under review. Oatmeni
is away down nnd It Is claimed by the
manufacturers that they nro selling It nt a
lops. It Is practically Ihn lowest In the
.history of the trade. Packing coffees arc
% cent lower than last week.
The sharp advance In Xante currants at
points of production causes a stronger feel
ing here ,
Stocks of salmon nro reported as low at
almost , nil markets and yet prices do not
advance.
An early advance In keg herring Is pre
dicted owing to the light cntch , the short
age , according to reliable , reports , amount
ing to 15000 barrels , or 300,000 kegs , by com
parison with the output of 1S94.
The manufacturers of cream of tartar
have announced an advance of 1 per cent
per pound , which they say Is duo to the
higher cost of 'the raw material , nrpo'.s or
the lees of wine. The nrgol forms In scales
on the bottom and sides of the tanks In
which the wine Is placed , after pressing , to
nettle , nnd from these scales , which are
crude tartar , the cream of tartar commerce
Is produced by refining processes. Formerly
this business of refining argots wns divided
Between four or live llrms located In New
i York , Brooklyn nnd Jersey City , but thu
, 'Competition became ro keen a row years
ago that most of the rentiers were unable to
keep m > the struggle for existence and sub-
J srquently the business pa a Jed Into the hands
of two or three concerns , which hnvo slnco
. had a practical monopoly of making cream
, - of tartar and tartarlo acid ,
n There Is nn organized movement among
large Intercuts In the tea trade throughout
the country to scctiro at us early a date
as possible the Imposition of a duty on tea.
Importers , Jobbers nnd even retailers are
heartily joining In the movement on the
ground that It will tend to place the ten
market pa a more substantial footing than
It has occupied for name time In fact over
since the dutv of 15 cents per pound was
removed In 1872. The war duty on tea was
S3 cents per pound , and tills was reduced
to 15 cents In 1S70. The American tea-
drinking public him been educated to pay
EO and CO cents per pound for ten , and usu
ally regards any at a lower prlco as unlit
for use. This has furnished the basis for
rivalry among riitnllcrs In mailing gifts In
the form of crockery and glassware , and ,
a consumer buying n pound of tea usually
buys at most 20 cents worth of tea and 30
cents ; of crockery , or retailer's excess profit ,
Free tea. It la claimed , has made this coun
try the dumping ground for the refute tea of
) ha world , for what tea China growers can-
rot nell to representatives of American
houses abroad they consign to their own
representatives hero ,
COUNTRY PRODUCE.
W. K. Ulddell. who represented Omaha at
the annual meeting of the commission men
at St. LoulH , reports a very Interesting
meeting. Hvcry city of any Importance ,
With the exception of Omaha , was rcpro-
' uented by a large delegation. The object of
the organization of the commission men Ute
to protect shlppcrH against fraudulent com-
tnltsloii IIOUECH nnd to devise ways nnd
means for conducting the business to the
best advantages of all concerned.
The break In the egg market bus been the
most Important feature of the produce trade
of the past week. Owing to the large re
ceipts and the small demand prices have
declined rapidly and even now with the
market way down there does not appear to
be any outlet for the eggs. Prices In
* other markets nre so low aa to make shlp-
.plnjf an Impossibility , while the local con
sumption is very small. Jn addition to the
large supply of fresh slock the storage
housrca of the country ore full of eggs. A
revere cold spell of several weeks duration
would , ( end to reduce production and might
have a beneficial effect upon the market.
The poultry market has been quiet. Re-
te'tits have avuraged t rather light and
' prlcea have been satisfactory lo shipper *
Choice butter Is In good demand , but the
' most of the fair to good country butter ar
riving liua tu go for packing stock at about
11 cents. .

CHICAGO , Jnn. 18. Wheat advanced

Wheat was decidedly the leader today , In

certain extent. The temper of the wheat
market wns a very uncertain ono nt first ,
I'uwcvcr , for after a sudden spurt at the
opening from G0' , c for May , up to C0c , It
hung back nnd fell again to COVic before an
hour of the session had passed , The bus
iness was largely local , but there were some
buying orders from St. Louis ns the price
wns going up , and selling orders from New
Yotk , when It was on the fence around
C01c to C0c. The New York selling orders
and the letting go of considerable lines of
long wheat by local bulls , brought nbout
the reaction referred to above , but the
market absorbed all the wheat offered dur
ing the decline , nnd wns again up to GOHu
by 11 o'clock. The second bulge did not
stop until from , OOJio to G0 % had been paid ,
nnd after that experience the short sellers
evinced a disposition to net with more cir
cumspection than they did on the llrst rife.
The nil rnll purchases nt Duluth yesterday
still lack confirmation , but the clearances
from the seaboard yesterday were heavy ,
and there was said to be some foreign buyIng -
Ing at New York , nnd the same Interest was
said to be buying freely for spring ship
ment nt western points. Hut the market
got Its chief strength from the growing ap
prehension that the situation was shaping
for another war scare. The report that u
British squadron wns on the way to this
country caused alarm among shorts , nnd
lhero was active covering and good Invest
ment buying , while there wns not much
wheat for sale. The damp , rainyweather
In this section nnd the cold wave following
closely upon It caused some apprehension
of damage , nnd wns also an Important cle
ment In creating the bullish feeling which
became so general In the last hour of the
stsslon. The price here rose to Glc about
twenty minutes from the close , and was
still bringing G0c when the closing bell
sounde'd. A heavy business was done.
Corn was fairly active nnd firm In spite of
the lower provision market , from which It
hns been obtaining Its tone lately. At no
time did the price for any delivery get be
low the llgures It closed nt yesterday. May
opened at 2Dc , against from 2Sic to 28c at
the close the day before. It worked up dur
ing the first bulgeIn wheat to from 29c to
23i29V4o , then back to from , 28ic to 28c , get
ting up again on the second rise In wheat
to9c. . and closed nt that.
In oats the feeling wns firm In sympathy
with wheat and corn , .and prices were Vic
higher on May an'd Ho up on other de
liveries. Mny started' Uo higher , at 19c ,
sold to 20V&C , and closed with sellers at that
price.
Business In the pork pit was much-smaller
than It was on the three .previous days , but
Interest was still sufficient to keep a good-
sized , crowd nround the center of action.
There was an absence of outside support
however , nnd crlces deo'.lncd somewhat In
consequence. Prices started nt a decline of
lOc In May pork and 24c ! each In lard nnd
ribs. At the close , compared with yester
day's final flKures , Mny pork was 15c'lower ,
Mny lard and ribs each lOc lower.
Estimated receipts for Monday : Wheat ,

From the above It will be noted that while
the receipts of cattle for the past week were
larger , there- was u heavy falling off In
hoK ? , as compared with the prcvloun week.
The receipts of hogs tho. rmst week were
only nbout one-half what they were during
the corresponding- week of last year , but It
must be borne In inml ! tlmt the market n
yrnr ngo was lloodcJ with stuff which was
being shipped out of the country for the
want of feed. If eompnrlsona nto mnile with
previous ycnr ? , the showing will not bo BO
u n favorable.
CATTLE The week closed with nbout
the average run 'of cattle , the number on
sale today being about the came as a week
ago. Among the cattle on sale were quite n
good many fairish cornfed steers , but none
that were very choice.
The market was In the main rather unsat
isfactory , It wan one of those dull , drnggy
niaikotst. devoid of life and wanting In In
teresting features. In other words. It wan
a typical Saturday's market. The buyers
did not want many cattle , and they were
In no hiitry about buying the few that
they did want. In the end , however , they
took the most of the cattle , nnd at prices
not much different from yesterday , weak
at yesterday's close would perhaps best
express the real situation.
The trade In cows nnd heifers was In
about the same condition as the steer trade
dull nnd without feature of Importance.
There was nothing of any Importance
doing In the feeder division of the yards
for the lack of fresh receipts.
The cattle market has suffered something
of a reverse during the past week. Prices
have fluctuated back nnd forth to some ex
tent , but taking the week as n whole , It Is
safe to say that values have declined lGff25o
on beef steers. Prime corn-fed steers are
telling as low , or * lower , than ever before
In the history of the dressed beef trade dur
ing the month of January. At the some
time them has been a fair demand , and the
arrivals of each day have In most ail cases
met with prompt sale.
Butchers1 stock , such as cows and heifers ,
have not suffered as much decline as have
fat cattle , and lOffSOe would cover all the
loss of the week. Aside from the lower
prices , the trade on most days of the past
week has been of a very satisfactory
character , the demand being good and the.
local killers free buyers.
The decline In prices on fat cattle has
apparently had no effect upon the trade In
stockers nnd feeders , which sold at strong
prices nil the week. The receipts of cattle
of that description have not been very large ,
while there has been n very fair demand ,
which , has been more than caual to the of
fering ? . Missouri nnd Iowa , especially , have
been good buyers , while a few cattle have
gene Into Nebraska. The good demand hac
kept prices right up , nnd , If anything , they
are a little higher at the close of the week
than they were at the opening. Representa
tive sales :

where cho hoped to establish her title to a.

tate , and who was placed in a London work-
hcuse , the New York Times said .that . cer
tain American newspapers were responsible
In part for this craze about foreign "estates"
vMch do not exist.
While it Is true tlmt prominent news
papers In the west and routh encourage this
mnnla by publishing sensational talcs In
wl ! ch It Is assumed that tlm claims of di
luted "heirs" are well founded , and by wltlt-
ho'.JIng official evidence to the contrary with
which they must be familiar , It Is also true
that the same delusion Is encouraged by
American lawyers. For example- Bays the
Tlirea , It .appears that Mrs. Sclbsls was ad-
vltcd some years BBO by ft firm of some prom
inence in the west that slip was an heir ,
not only to the Sclbels estate Jn Germany.
but also In the Temple estate In EnglanJ.
Thtnli ) advlco led her to pursue both of tbcso
eltslvo properties. We recall .the fact that
the attorney general of & western state was
engaged for more than a year in striving to
establish the claims of American "heirs"
with respect to a great estate eald to bo
situated In England and which really had
no existence this side of the moon.
