"Wheat started rx shade firmer than H
closed yesterday at from BDHc to oJ'4o ' and
for an hour made little change from the
opening. The firmness was duo to the com
paratively light receipts at Minneapolis and
Dtilulh , which amounted to 412 carloads ,
against D21 yesterday and 414 a week ago ,
but as only ICfl curs were received a year
ngo this had little effect on the bears. The

Importing nations. Hut the business and
llnanclal outlook seemed to be regarded as
milllclontly uncertain to warrant caution In
all speculative ventures , and the result was
that the volume of business wan light and
price changes narrow. Export clearances
from the principal Atlantic ports , Including
New Orlennn , equalled 230,000 bu. In wheat

pointment to the bulls. The market weak

C0c. Corn ruled quiet , but held very
Btcady , with the trade about featureless.
Local rceeliitR continue llbcial , but there
wan not much selling pressure' and the
price kept very steady. Mtiy opened un
changed at 2Slic and at from 2S'Jc , to 2Si/4c
split , and hold steady within narrow lim

the last hour and May sold to 2Sc , closing
at that figure.
Oats were slow. The feeling was firm
early. Influenced by n better cash trade
and a fairly good short demand. Just be
fore the close free buying caused nn ad

19-c to 19c and closed at 19c.
Hog products were decidedly stronger
early In the day on the light arrivals of
live hogs , but on heavy realizing sales
most of the advance was lost. The market
later recovered part of the decline , with
the advance In wheat , and prices nt the

CATTLE The receipts of cattle fell short
of the run yesterday by some 40i ) head , but
there were enough to supply the demand
nnd It was nil the better that the supply
should bo light after the break yesterday.
The market on fat steers was slow and
In most cases a little easier. In a few In
stances salesmen who had cattle that
seemed to especially please the buyers
thought they got fully steady prices , but
the general market wns weak. Kvcry one
bought freely ycstciday and they wore not
overly anxious for cattle today , so that
they couM afford to take their time In makIng -
Ing selections. Among tno offerings w'ero
some right good cattle. About everything
was sold before the close.
Theie were llftccn or sixteen loads of
cows and heifers on sale. The buyers
picked up the most desirable among the
offerings In the morning , paying about
steady prices. Later the market castd off
and closed slow and weak.
The offerings of stockcrs nnd feeders
were very light mid the market strong.
Feeding cattle of nil kinds arc bringing
way up prices as compared with fat cattle.

While It was at first thought the deed was

U03TON. Jan. II. The Gloucester flshlns
schorncr Fortuna \vas tunk In a collision
with tlio Uoston l-'rnlt company's 'steamer
Ilnrnstabla off Highland llRlit last night.
Nine of the Fortunu'o crew were drowned ;
fourteen were saved. Those lost arc : Wil
liam Aclun.in , llobcrt ChllJs , Harry McPhoe ,
Tliomas Steward , Crawford Mlnnch , Ilnrvey
Kmcncau , Simon Devans , John Clnrk nnd Wll
llnni Tobln.
The first news of the disaster reached the
city on the arrhnl of the Harnstaulo today ,
with the fourteen survivors of the Kortuna'a
crew on board. Krotn these men It was
lenrncd that the collision occurred about
7:30 : p. m. , when the vessels were about four
miles off Highland light. The night wns ex
tremely darlc and a lumpy sea wao running.
The Fortuna was bound for the Oeorgcs ,
carrying a crew of twcnly-lhree men , In.
eluding the captain , John W , drcenlaw. The
schooner wns on the stnrbrard tack , going
at a good rate. Tha Harnstnulo's lights
were seen , but knowing she had the right of
way the schooner's course was not altered ,
until too late. , The steamer struck her well
forward , cutting n deep hole , and the
schooner began to setllo Immediately , Be
fore the boats could ho cleared she went
down and the crew were left struggling In
the water until fourteen of them wcro picked
up by tlio Barnstable's boat. The others
had gone down.
Captain Payne of the Harnatahlc said to a
reporter of the Awoclntccl press : "Wo wcro
about three or four miles off Highland light ,
southwest , v.hcn wo struck the schooner
right under her bows. We wcro procesdlnu
on our way , never dreaming of the Impending
calamity , when suddenly wo raw the star
board light of a vessel directly In our course.
It seems as If ths light had been covered
by the fore tackle and the wind at that mo
ment had blown It clear , thus enabling us to
yeo the great danger \vo were In. The whcol
was hove around to port , but It was too Into
to avoid the collision. We struck tlio Por-
tuna about thrco feet aft of the fore rig ;
glng and she sank about four minutes later.
Wo Instantly launched cur boats and made
every effort to save the crew. Wo got four *
teen of them , among whom was Captain
Qrecnlaw , but nine \\cra drowned. "
Giptatn Payne displayed much emotion as
ho described the accident and expressed pro
found regret at Us fatal results.
The rescued men were propefly cared for
on board the Barnstable and Immediately
upon their arrival this morning were sent
to their hcmos In Gloucester by the train.
The lost sailors all shipped irom Gloucester.
The Fortuna was < a vessel of about 110
tons and was Insured In the Ilostcn Marino
Insurance company. Captain Greenlaw was
a part owner. The other owners all rcs.do
In Gloucester.
