Hy far Iho moit Impottnnt excnt of tlic pn t week , to for ns locnl business Inter ests nro concerned , was tlic Hidden nnd sharp advance on nil kinds of cattle. It has been a lontt time slnco the ( armcr1 * nnd ranchmen of thz west hnvc been In so linppy n frame of mind nn during the past few dnjs. Kvcry nmn who hni been on the market with stock to cell hni gone homo frelliiK encouraged , nnd that the dawn of better limes \a \ nt hand. The producer la not Iho only one who hns mnrket , but the lelnll trndo of the stnU nnd Inter the Jobbing trade , mtmt fe a great Improvement If the prcjent ndvnnc In prices rrinlntalned nny length of tlmo Tor montlm the cattle market has bed on the down grade , nnd thousands of cnttl have been sold of late at prices thnt nettei the feedeis heavy losses. In many In Fiances fat stock wns sold for less than what It orlglnnlly cost , nnd after hnvlnt , consumed n large amount of corn. Untie nuch conditions there wns llltlu hope fo prosperity among the farmer1 * , or In thos lines of business which are more or le dependent upon the farming community fo During- the past year , whlltf three or fou of the principal markets of the wcs handled over ( ,00.000 fewer cattle than In 1894. prices at the end of the > ear wcr decidedly lower than at1 the opening. Theie was n feudden nnd unexpected rcnctloi nftcr the top point of the year wns rcachei last March , There were various contrlbut Ing causes for that , Including general linn times , weak foreign demand , low price for other klnd of stock , but none wns more potent than the wldely-heinldcd allc gallons of the secretary of agilculture nbout there being a beef trust to advance the price of beet bevond llgurea that poor people could pay. The allegations had the widest possible circulation. While the tat tie supply was so shoit ns to make dealers look for extravagant prices , the people got the Impression that beef wns dear nt nny price , and so prices steadily moved down ward nftcr the first quarter of the year closing at the very bottom. The ceonom leal fnd caused by hard times made peop'e wo les * ) meat nna look for substitutes. To still further dipres * the mnrket Ihi. government allow-rd Mexican cattle to crme In free , and during the vear there were driven and shipped In 23SGb3 head. During the past month 415,081 head wcro brought Into this country from Mexico , nnd nt a time when Nebraska cattle were selling bslow the cost of production. The tide at last has turned , and the mnrket appears to be working toward n higher plane , but whether the Improvement Is permanent or only spasmodic , remains to be rcen , though the best Informed cattle men of the country look for a much better market from now on , nnd consequent ! * better times In the cattle-producing states OMAHA JOBBING TRADE. In the Jobbing district business has movet along In about the usual channels without Incident of Importance , and trade has been largely on the routine order. The volume of business Is fnlr , though there Is no decided gain over the previous week , nnd Jobbers as a rule report condi tions ns favorable ns expected. Collections nro not very good , but they are holding up pretty well. Most houses report n good trndo In the western states , espsclally Colorado , and the field will be thoroughly covered by Omaha Jobbers. The clearings of the Omaha banks show some Improvement over last season , which would seem to ben' ' out the statements ol most houses that they are doing more bus iness than they \vere a year ago. BOOTS AND SHOCS. In every section of the country but this the weather this winter has been all that the shoe trade could desire. Snow , nln aril frost have followed each oth3r In rapid succession to produce the conditions calcu lated to stimulate the demand for rubber goods and foot wear of all kinds. The mild weather that has prevailed In Nebraska has been a greit drawback to trade In this particular line , but btlll there In as much business doing1 as could veil be expected. Retailers have purchased very conservatively and stocks In the country nro generally small , so that with the com ing of an Improved retail trade there ought to be a revival In a jobbing way. There seems to be a general understand ing that sole leather has touched the lowest point and a slight rebound Is anticipated. Old experienced dealers say they never knew hides to be so scarce at country points The conviction Is gratlually growing upon the leather and shoo trade that a limit has been reached In the supply of hides. Mean while new uses for leather aio constantly being opwicd. There Is consldcrab'o di versity of opinion as to the future of hides and leather. Some of the most conserva tive tanners appear to think that values will neither advance nor decline greatly dur ing 189G. DRY GOODS PEOPLE HOPEFUL. Only a fair business was transacted by the dry goods people during the past week , but for all that they arc looking forward to a large spring" trade. The retail trade In this territory has been buying very conservatively for the past year or more , and a very small quantity of goods has been cnrrled over from ono season to the next , so thnt the Jobbers lime reason to ex- pct a good business. The market on cotton nnd woolen goods has been very quiet the past week and no material change In values Is noted. At primary points the demand for goods ap- to bo very light and there Is a good Sfears of complaint as to the indifferent char acter of the trade , f BARREN OP FEATURES , 'The hardware trade of the past week has been barren of features of any Importance. Business has moved along In the well worn grooves without any friction nnd without any changes to attract the attention , cither In the character of the trade or In mar ket values Aa a general thing local houses report the year as starting out with a better trade than the previous : year. GROCERY TRADE UNCHANGED. While some houses report a llttlo more life In trade the past week the generality of re- port9 agree that bushiest ) Is Just about holdIng - Ing Its own and that"trado conditions are not materially changed cither ono way or the other. Stock taking has absorbed a good deal of attention and the work con nected with that important event Is hardly completed , The market has not been prolific of changes , there being a strong tendency on the part of values to continue In about tnn mme notches as a week ago. The prices of dried California Bartlett pears me now fully CO per cent higher than they wcro a year ago. Canned pears , of which the pack wns relatively short In 1894 , are held at about the same prices au they were a year since. It Is icported that the totnl shipments of dates from the 1'erslnn Gulf for this sen- EOII were less than f 0,000 boxes , against over 700,000 In the. previous year , with re sults that the stock carried over In London is email. An enthurlastlc irrlgatlonlst In the west ern part of the state writes to the 1'rcss of the great prollts In growing pop-coin. Locnl Jobbers say that so long as the corn IB grown on contract for some seed houtro it may be all right , but the producers would llntl It a discouraging task to sell In the opoi market. Tlio price , usually quoted nt about 1 cent per pound , looks very allur ing , but the trouble Is that the consump tion In EO veiy small. Reports fiom Gloucester and Bos ton continue to Indicate nn unusually Bmall stock of salt fish of all de scriptions. Bo far as mackerel Is concerned , there is a smaller supply than has been known for many years at this season , and there la the prospect now that llttlo more will bo added to It , as the supply of Irish In the primary market , la said to bo nbout exhausted. Cod , to which buyers turn their attention when mackerel la scarce and high. Is beginning oven now to be Inquired for , although holdersdid not look for much business until shortly before the advent of the Lenten searon. The supply of cod la reported to bo much lighter than usual at this time of the > car. The email Mocks of cod and similar tlsh have caused a firm feeling In the market , without pro ducing an actual advance. Holders , however - over , are hopeful of an early Improvement in market values now that the demand is beginning to manifest Itself , In most markets of the country nprleots are about the only article of canned Cali fornia fruits of which anything like a fair supply exists , and that Is duo to the fact that the high prices demanded as a result of a light crop and small puck have com pelled buyers to leave this fruit alone. Cherries are almost entirely out of market and plums are scarcely obtainable. Peaches , particularly lemon clings , are in exceedingly small supply. MANUFACTURERS WORKING HARD. The manufacturers of the state are doing all that they can to secure what trade la to be had In their lines and to keep as much money at home as possible. During the paEt week the secretary of the associa tion visited Fremont and called upon the different retail houses for the purposeof talking liomo Industry tuid incidentally ask them 10 ptil In nny lines of homemade Itootia tlial Ihey tnlpht tint have In Mock nt th" time Durlnc the comlnR week he will Mrit other cities In the ttntc for the same . The miiiiufnttuicrs of brooms nrc com plaining that the demand for their line of goods Is the worst In the history of the tiade. Last year1' ! crop of broom corn was vc-rj large , especially In Nebraska nnd oth r western states , while there was a natural falling oft In the demand for the manu factured good-j. on Ing to the general de pression affecting nil lln" > of business , ratmcrs found It Impossible to dispose of their coin , cvon nt the \ery low prices pre vailing , nnd In n gient many case- * em ployed men to work tip their crop Into broom" , which they dl po e of as best th y tan , clllng them out to the country stores nnd peddling them nround the country. Wheat opened rnther stronger than It closed yesterday , due to the small ship ments thl1) week from Argentine nnd to an advance of U < 1 In the prlco of American wheat In Liverpool , In the face of the de clines hero on the day before. Uut the do- IKerles In the northwest were Inrge C8I cars , against 398 cars on the same day last week and the exports for the week from both roasts were about 590,000 bu. less than the week before. There seemed to be a growing suspicion that the war news had been overworked nnd buyers vcre cautious nbout making Investments. Some of the big operators were disposed to raid the mar ket , nndi the prlco gradually yielded. The locnl receipts were larger than expected , nnd there Is a liberal estimate for Monday.
