"A Railroad Ticket" will close Us very
successful engagement at ths Crelghton today
with two peffcrmances , afternoon and oven-
Ing.
For porno years past ono of the most wel
come attractions at our playhouses has been
the JIunlon brothers' "Fantasma. " Our old
friend returns to us this season at the Crelgh-
ton for four nights , commencing Sunday
matinee , January 12 , In a new dress , and with
many new featurea The company Includes
George Adams , the famous clown ; Nettle
Dlack , who plays the fairy quesn ; Paulle
Qltdden , a cornet soloist ; Sail I o Stephens , nni
tha McOonough brothers , grotesque dancers.
It Is said that on the whole "Fantasma"
will this year be better than ever before , as
besides the artists mentioned many special
ties have been engaged especially for tbla
season ,
A. M. Palmer's company , In "Trilby , "
madn an excellent Impression In Kansas City
last week , on Its return engagement there.
It will bo remembered that this organiza
tion , which appears at the Crelghton the
last half of tbo present week , created a
genuine furore at tlu.t lion to earlier In the
season , and although the cast has been
somewhat altered since that time , It would
seem that the changes have resulted In
strengthening the performance than other
wise.
The Kansas City Journal says : The performance -
formanco Is an excellent one , at least two
parts being moro satisfactorily presented
than in the original performances at this
theater. These parts are the Taffy , as done
by Mr , Canlleld , who wns the- Laird before ,
and Little Hllloo , played by Mr , Walter
Thomas. Little Blllce has never been played
by any ono to the satisfaction of the read
ers of the' book , but that Is duo to the fact
that this Is the ono part to which Mr. Pal
mer did not do full justice when he wrote
his play.
Miss Crane's wonderfully effective per
formance of Trilby grows In Impresslveness
as It extends In acquaintance. She has a
firm grasp of a very definite conception.
The new Svengall , Mr. Harry O. Carlton ,
makes clear the aim that It would bo Im
possible for a gooj character actor to fall
In this role. If Mr , Carlton had been the
first Svengall ho would have been accounted
great , but ho would not liavo been great.
Ho Is well suited physically , and has an
effective makeup.
Mr , Morrison still gives his admirable
performance of Qecko , and Miss Kelfferth
her unctuous delineation of Mine. Vlnard.
And Iho Times speaks of Harry a. Carlton
as "a masterful Svengall , " a character that
Is a precious gift to the slage.

Ized , Information \\as received at the
Treasury department today that orders fop
the Importation of gold had been cancelled
nnd that $3,000.000 would go out by tomor
row's steamers. Hut that Is not the most
disquieting feature of the situation , ng pri
vate advices from New York tell ot largo
withdrawals for domestic sequestration.
This Is what the administration feared moro
than withdrawals for export. The latter
Is something that can bo gauged and estl-
mctcd. The former Indicates cither dis
trust or n move on the part of IntendlnR
bend holders to dww upon the government's
gold for money with which to pay for the
bonds. In either event the ends of the
treasury will be defeated , for It cannot af
ford to feed n local panic or supply the
wherewithal to feed Its own vitality. Atten
tion Is called to the domestic drain on the re
serve by the refusal of the officials nt the
sublrensury In New York to give Informa
tion as to the extent of the withdrawals.
This silence seems to bo work
ing nn effect the opposite of
what wns Intended nml "scare dispatches"
pet-red Into Washington this afternoon from
the Wall street news agencies asking for
the latest nbout the treasury situation. If
the reports from Now York should be con
firmed by liter advices It Is not Improbable -
able that the secretary of the treasury may
be forced to.abandon his popular loan pro-
K un nnd mnko another syndicate deal
within the next ten days or two weeks to
protect the reserve ag.ilnst annihilation.
The reserve will be down to $58,000,000 by
tomorrow night on known figures.
