m THE OMAHA DAILY BEESUNDAY , JANUARY 5 , 189G. CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE LOCA ! Jobbers Report a Moderate Business in Most Lines , COUNTRY COLLECTIONS CONTINUE SLOW llnllilny niillncKii Prnvnlloil Ilnrlnir Orrntcr Pnrt of Pni J Week < lct- In .Slinpc toSlnrt Out /tilth Krrnh Snmlil : . Mcrchnnillse dtirltiB the past week wns conductcil on very narrow lines In all branches of the Jobbing trade. During the first half of the week a good many houses \\cre Inking slock nnd getting everything cleaned up for the commencement' of the new year. As n gcnernl thing the latter pnrt of December nnd the first half of Janti- nry constitutes n Oiill period In the Jobbing business , during which no one expects to nell nny great amount of merchandise , so that the results of the past week have been In no wise a disappointment. In consequence quence of the email amount of business doing the markets have shown very few changes of nny Importance. This Is the Benson of the year when It ft seems natural to look forwaid to the future , nnd U Is snfe to sny that while there Is always n difference of opinion , Jobbers ns u rule nro anticipating a continuance of the moderate trade that charnclerlzcs the fall and early winter. The low prices jirnVnll- Ing on nil kinds of country produce which the farmers of this section of the state have for rale Is tecognl cd an a Rfent draw back by the trnde. At the same time , the territory covered by the Omaha Jobbers IH so large that even with n very limited trade In nny section , the aggregate for the whole territory must bo large. There Is no nt- tempt to deny the fact that conditions In Nebraska are very far from favorable , but nt the same time great things are expectei of Irrigation In the western part of the. state. A merchant fiom Custcr county wna It the city the latter pnrt of the week am gave expression to what nppenrs to bu the general opinion ns to the outlook In thu liart of the stale. He said : "Our farmers nre terribly hard up , but they are worklni , us they never worked before nnd they are bound to succeed If energy nnd solf-ilcnla nre of any avail. They are working curly nnd late on their Irrigation dltcht'S In order to have them completed by spring. Some o them are too poor to buy what clothlnt , they renlly need , but they arc working Jus the uaine. The past season convinced then that there Is almost no limit to thu crops lha can be grown on Nebraska poll under Irrlga tlon , and another year will sec thousand of acres of land under ditch. Omnha jobbers nro many of them becom Ing very cnlhuflnstlc Irrlgatlonlsts. They figure that when the hind Is once under ditch that It will require very few crops to place the farmers In an Independent posl tlon , when trnde In that part of the state must bJcome exceedingly good. There arc those whose enthusiasm lends them to pre diet that the day Is not far distant when the western part of the Htulc will be the best Held for the Omaha Jobbsr. DRY GOODS QUIT. As usual at the turning point of the year the dry goods buslncfs has been of a very uninteresting character , with the volume of sales rather small. During the early par of the week the weather was very unfavor able and the change to colder weather Is too recent to make Itself felt ns yet. The old year closed with a dull tone generally orally prevailing In the market for staple cottons. In some lines of goods tariff legislation Is having Its effect because of the possibility of higher values resulting. Holders of such goods are In no hurry to unload. HAUDWAIIK WITHOUT FEATURE. The hardware Jobbers of the city have nl bJcn taking stock during the period under review and there has been no attempt to push buslncfs. In fnct the traveling mei have all been enjoying the holidays at home nnd getting samples In shape for the spring trade. It Is usually well along toward the middle of the month before the men get on on the road ngnn | and In the meantime ma ! orders constitute ! about all the business tha Is doing. Hall orders have been fairly gooi considering the general situation In the coun try and there appears to be no disposition on the part of the trade to enter nny com plaints. Nothing has been developed during the week that has any effect upon the mnrket At thn present time production Is a little slow , but stocks In Jobbers' and manufac turers' hands are generally reported ns ample to meet nny demand that Is likely to come with the new season. On most lines of shelf hardware the feel Ing Is generally steady , but otherwise there nre signs of weakness and it Is predlctei taht any revision of prices will likely been ' on the down side. BOOTS AND SHOES. Business with the shoo houses has been fully ns good ns usual nt this season of the year. The colder weather Is n more favorable feature and the Jobbers generallj appear to be feeling pretty well satisfied Prospects for the spring trade nre certainly very good. Prices on all grades of shoes nro firm nnd the market generally gives signs of strength. It Is said that the smal amount of leather now In the hands of tnn- ners and manufacturers will be peen ab sorbed when manufacturing operations on spring nnd summer goods nre once fully under way. way.THE THE GROCERY TRADE. Local Jobbers of groceries report the usua amount of business doing at this season. As a rule , Omnha houses experienced a very fair trade In holiday goods , such ns fancy dried and canned fruits , nuts. etc. The market on olives Is higher , owing to the decision of the appraisers appointed by the secretary of the treasury. Under the . fin no tiuty was placed on olives. Hy the terms of the Wilson bill , however , J per cent nd valorem duty was Imposed. The foreign Importers were displeased with the establishment of such a duty , and It has been charged that In order to avoid It to some extent the olives were quoted on In voices nt a price much lower than their real value , The decision declares the Im porters shiill pay a. duty bused on nn In- creare of from 8 to 35 per cent on the value of the ( foods above the amount named in the Invoices. The market on all kinds of California dried fruits , with the posslb'c exception of peaches , Is very llrm. Apricots nro espe cially In n strong position , the crop haviW been light to start with nnd the demand good , MANUFACTURERS I'LKASRD. During the past week the State Hoard of Purchase and Supplies met In Lincoln and awarded the contracts for supplies for the cemlnjr quarter. In the list of Roods were many articles manufactured In the state nnd orders for such were all awarded to the home 'factories. The Nebraska manufactur ers carried away orders for Koodu amount- In ) ; to over $15.000. Ever since the homo Industry agitation was commenced by The Ileo there have lieen some business men who have claimed that such a move wns contrary to the tra ditions of trade and against the Interests of merchants. In view of the eland taken by pome houses , the manufacturers are pointing with no llttlo pleasure to a circular received from London , ICnKland , entitled "Tho question of the Hour. " The Inside of the folder starts out with thu assertion : "If there bo one question of greater Im portance thnn any other. It IH. How nro our working pejpls to bj kept employed ? " Then followB the description of u larno match factory In London which It la said could employ several hundred people , now Idle , If KrirllHliinpn would nsn nnlv tmimtiMln matches. On the last page occur these ex- prrFslons ; "Support Homo -Industries" niu" "Employ Ilrltlsh Labor. " Nebrnpka mnnu facturers feel that If It Is allowable to ap peal to consumers according to the English Ideas of trade propriety , they nre excusable for doing the immo thing. At the panic tlmu tlie nctunl number on sate was fujly ns large ns ycfterdny. As to thu inarket , there \vns a decided Improvement all along the line and tlio day's trading , as n whole , was of u very satisfactory character , viewed from n seller's standpoint. For the number hero there was n cosd representation of fat cattle and some of the offerings were very desirable. The buyers acted as If they wanted the cattle and when the trade was once under way they were not long In picking up the oirerlnuH. Du- slrablo cattle sold fully lOc higher and the buyers were claiming that they paid n ICe advance In n peed many cases. Ono bunch of good 1.473-pound Polled Ansus sold nt JI.2U. the highest price realized In some little time. Several loads of llfliter cattle went nt J3.70 to Jl.W. Everything was sold early. There were not enough cows and 'helfern on palu to really make a maikct , the totnl offerings being only four or live loads. The buyers lock what there were , paying good strong prices. . . . Stockers and feeders wen.in light supply and were snapped tip quickly at strong prices. Keally dcslrnble cuttle sold fully lOe higher. The advance was due apparently to the llpht offerings and the fnct Hint there were a few buyers In the yards , gome of the buyers who were In yesterday did not get the cattte that they wanted nnd stayed over. Speculators were all cleaned out , which made the demand still more pro nounced. The cattle mnrket has shown some llttlo Improvement during the ivs week , an 1 Ir ap parently recovering from the holiday flumps. There has been mora life to the trade nnd a gradual strengthening of values. The advance from day to day has not been very marked , but at the close of the week It Is easy to note n gain of 15e to 20c In the past six days. Good beef cattle , especially , have told freely during the latter half of the week , nnd It has been no trouble to keep the yards cleared. Durlnir the past few days j feeling has arisen f--t the turning point has been reached , nnd that from now on the market will show a gradual Improvement , At the same time It fa feared that feeders. owln to the scarcity of money and the wnnt of hogs to follow their cattle , will rush their holdings to mnrket at the llrst sign of any Improvement and force values down again. On the other hand , .c Is thought that a continued moderate run of cattle would produce an Improvement in the mnr ket that would encourage feeders and cause them to hold back their cattle when there seemed dancer of breaking prices.
