nd housed his wagon for tlu winter , as
iany as thirty does are claimed to have
marched down to the dump to be drowned In
single day.
Commissioner of Health Savllle. says that
n only two or three days during the month
vero the tails counted. The Inspectors had
; en laid off and there was na one to look

ounted the tails himself on ono or two
ays , but the rest of the time , there was no

Spoerl's latest bill was referred to the

GRAND ISLAND , Deo. 26. There Is
but little left of the Grand Island I knew
tn tlio later 703 , anA Instead there nre
such substantial Improvements that any one
predicting the half of them twelve years
ngo would have been deemed a foolish
visionary.
This Is n pcrtoil of depression , Idrntlcnl
with that we had In the grasshopper tlmeo ,
but I am willing to go on record with n
prophecy that the growth of this town In the
next twelve years will far exceed that of the
last twelve.
TIe sugar beet and Irrigation nro destined
to make Nebraska a densely populated and

It stands apart , -and for years non but

housa Bdwardi Burke and Ellen , his" wife ,
have lived , f9r , enty-three years. They
were married' In 1873 , and took this cottage -
tago and settled down to a comfortable ,
drowsy exlsUnee after the fashion of the
respectable Ne'w England village family.
At the endof ( six years the neighbors ,
who had been watching them carefully ,
.notlcd .someth.n [ ( ; was ' wrong. The .wife could
! > : seen "eatlug her ; meals ' at a'table on the
ground floor of 'the' cot'tage while the hus
band was to bo seen eating at a table In one
of the upstairs rooms. There were no men's
articles in the Cashing Ellen Burlc ? hung
out on the line In the back yard , and oucc
a week Edward carried a bundle to a washing
woman In the village. The neighbors decided
that on ? cf those- fierce , bitter , silent quar
rels , not uncommon In New England villager ,
wan on between them.
They decided that It must be the mair
who- wan at fault , and that ho must be
crazy. So h2 was hauled up , and all the
village turned out to hear his explanation.
He simply said that ho and his wife had
quarreled , and had not been speaknlg , and ,
so far as he could manage It , would never
speak to each other again. He said that
sh.3 lived on the ground floor , and ho on the
second floor , and thta each establishment
was complete In Itself.
This was not lunacy , and so Edward Burke
was released and allowed to go back to his
queer home. But village curiosity was still
a hunger and a thirst. So Ellen Burke
was hauled up , charged with being Insane- .
She soon proved that sae was perfectly
sane , and did It without letting out any
more of the cause and progress of the
quarrel than had her husband.
They gradually dropped all their acquaint
ances and spent all their time not employed
In making their separata und Indepsndsnt
livings tn the house , she1 brooding downstairs ,
ho brooding In his sitting room , over her
head. No doubt each sent many a longing
thought out toward the other or backward
toward the days when they had wandered
the village lanes , each with an arm around
the other. But that stubborn , relentless
pride , that far of being thought weak and
yielding , held them apart. And so the years
passed down to November 3 last , almost tha
seventeenth anniversary of their quarrel.
On that day something happened , no one
knows what , that angered Burke Into breakIng -
Ing the silence. Down the stairs he came
and , for the first tlmei in seventeen years ,
walked In upon his wife and bgan to ohout
at her. She answered him In the same strain.
Ho took her by the shoulders and gave her
a tremendous shaking , set her down hard In
her big rocking cTialr and stalked away.
She was in a frantic race. She- rushed out
and had him arrested. Ho wan fined $3. Ho
appealed the case , and It came before the
court of common pleas. Th decision of the
lower court was afllrmcd. and now Burke
has not only to pay the 43 , but the costs of
the appeal.
This looks as If Edward and Ellen were
furHier away each from the other than ever
before. But there is ono hopeful sign. They
are talking to each other again dally , hourly ,
It Is true they are quarreling , but as the
silence Is broken , thu tears may come nt any
moment. The neighbors ore ho | > 3ful and ar ?

Here I ? a horse story told * Chicago Times-
Herald man by James F. I.yon of the First
cavalry , who had no superior In valor , and
will carry to the grave A limp and a quarter
of a pauml of lead. Hewld : "We had In
cur company a young German named Schultz.
His hone was his especial pride. Sometimes
Schultz went to sleep without rations , but
his horse never. No matter how SCUCA or
how hard It waste get forage , thp young

'Good night , Frank , ' In Iwo languages

have I seen Schultz skirmish for n lunch
for hla horse when we halted to make cot-

While the rest of us stayed In our tents and
read or played cards , Schultz would keep
Frank compiny for hours , sometimes talking
Germanto htm and sonutlmea English , Some
of our horses showed lack of care ; Frank
showed ovsrcarc ; was always In good order ;
In camp he gllftened like a new plug hat , and
seemed as fond of hU master as his master
of him. When the Atlanta campaign opened ,
In May , 1S64 , there was not a prouder soldier
or a prettier horse than Schultz and Frank In
the First.
"Our first fight of noteIn tint campaign
was at Vanell's station , May 9. Somebody
rover mind who made- mem of It. Our
little brigade , the Second of the First cavalry

by Colonel O. II. La Grange , \\as thrown

and we fought It all day. Wo started to
charge , but wore halted In a piece of woods
and were ordered * to fight on foot. We were
already under fin ? and In considerable con
fusion , and only a portion of the- command
heard the order , so it happened that Mine
cf us fought as cavalry and mine ao Infantry ,
Schultz remained mounted , and did herolo
service. Early In the * light his pet was shot.
As the animal made but llttls fuss over It
and steadied down quickly , his rider thought
it WPS only a flight wound , and remained
In the battle all day , having traveled many
mile ? In the performance of Important and
dangerous tasks , tbo wounded animal seem

completely as his master. That night , at
9 o'clock , the brigade camped. The moment
Frank was iinwddled ho lay down. Schultz
thought It was because the horse , llko
himself , was tired , and , after patting him
and telling him In both lunguagCi ; what a

day , and thanking him for carrying
him safely through one of the hottest bat
tles , h3 busied himself with supper getting.
In the forage bag there were several extra
ears of corn. After his own repast of black
ccfi'ee , crackers and uncooked white pork ,
such a banquet na many a soldier has been
more thankful for than he was tor the feast
of last Thanksgiving , Schultz shelled the
corn and took It to Frank. The horse did
not welcome him as usual ; did not rest his
head on the master's shoulder and look , If
he did not speak , thanks for such a master.
He didn't hear Schultz announce In German
that he was coming with a double ration.
Frank was dead and stiffening , showing
that soon after lying down life had de
parted.
"When Schultz realized that his pet was
dead ho threw the- corn down , dropped by
the side of the animal , tenderly laid one
hand on his neck , and with the other gently
rubbed his head , as ho had done- many
times before , and sobbed 111:3 a child. In
talking about his less the next day he said :
'My poor Frank couldn't tell meho was
badly hurt , and ask to go to the hospital ,
as I would have done had I been shct.
He- carried me all day as If he thought it
waa his duty , and that things would g
wrongIf h3 didn't , and when the battle was
over and I was getting supper , ha lay down
and died. That horse was a better soldier
than I am than any man In the regiment.
Not ono of us would have fought all day
with such a hurt as that. No one would
have expected it of us ; yet I expected It-
of Frank , and ho did not fall me. I shall
never think as much of anything again as
long as I live- . ' With this outburst the poor
fellow broke down again , and none of his
comrades made light of the young German's
sorrow thqy .knew It was sincere. "
That was"a"story about a good horse-and
a goad soldier. Now , let me tell about ono
of the trials of a good soldier with a bad
horse. The late General John A. Kellogg ,
who fought his way from lieutenant of n
company to commander of a brigade , bought
a magnificent roan a few days before Gen
eral Grant began the closing campaign. It
was a high spirited creature , tall , powerful
and speedy. Kellogg was greatly pleased
with his new possession. Ills staff had to
do a good deal of fast riding for a week
before the closing scenes of the great con
test began. The general seemed to want
every one In the Fifth corps to see his
handsome roan , so he rode him from camp
to camp , making social calls , his staff , made
up largely of new riders , bobbing and JoltIng -
Ing after him. There was not a man in
Kellogg'a military family but regretted the
birth of that roan. Ho was jolting their
young lives away.
The day of reckoning came at the battle
of Gravelly linn , or , as some call It , White
Oak Road , March 31 , 1865. Kellogg massed
his brigade In a piece of woods. About 10
o'clock It became necessary to move quickly
to a better position and get Into line of
battle for Immediate business , for a division
of the other folks was coming that way ,
practicing on their famous "Yell" pong.
Just as the brigade was In line , and almost
before It had got Its beating heart well
under foot , the enemy poured a vast sheet
of le-ad at us. "Stand fast , men ; hold your
ground ! " commanded Kellogg from his
prancing roan. Then came another volley.
That , with the roar and rattle of the union
guns , was too much for the roan. He
bounded Into the air and seemed to turn
around , facing the rear , before he struck the
ground. In spite of Kellc-gg's weight on the
bits and 'his frantic whoas , the < roan "Um
bered" to the rear at grsater speed than he
had ever traveled , while churning the staff
Into a side-ache. Away they dashed , horse
and rider , and nt a most critical time. It
was a hot tight and no time for the general
to Umber to the rear. Juot as the chief of
staff directed an orderly to go to the gen
eral's rescue and glvo him a cafe horse , I saw
Kellogg slide down the tall c-t the flying
rcan and start on a dead run for the line of
battlo.
It Is due to the equine population to say
that It was a very uncommon thing for a
horse to try to get away-from a battle. A
thousand men longingly looked for a chance
to "limber" to the rear and "cool coffee"
during a fight where one horse even tried
to escape bullets , The man reasoned and
the horse didn't. Most horses In battle , un
less wounded , were as unconcerned , appar
ently , as If they had been pulling plows.
The man in battle' who was as unconcerned
as ono holding a plow was a fool. Men who
say they were as happy and contented In a
battle as while at home on the farm or
eating a Christmas dinner lie , Such a thing
Is Impossible , unless , as stated , the man Is a
fool , and fools don't enlist.
