C'HICAOO , Deo. 17. The markets today
were , at n rule , dull nnd depressed , wheat
nlone showing nn mlvntue ovr yesterday's
Ilgures. Corn lost He , outn the same nnd
IirovlslonR from 5c to lOc. Wheat closed nt
u net giiln of % c for May , nnd with a some
what better feeling.
Wheat fold early In the day nt the clos
ing figures of last night , but with lower
Kngllsh cables nnd the continued heavy
receipts Iri the northwest the prlco soon
went off nearly ' , ie. There was n good
dcnl of liquidation nnd short soiling , and as
trudo was flow und narrow the price went
off easily , but Inter It wns found that the
world's phlpm'.lils last week were really
only fiSI2,000 hii. , Instead of S.OOO.lwJ bu. . ns
unolllcinlly reported yesterday. I'rlnx * wlied
that thu condition of winter wheat was
alarming und St. 1/nils wired that large
areas were under water , with a cold wave
threatened , und all advices Indicated that
the Brent bulk of winter wheat area was
without snow protccllon. This , together
with llbcrul covering by shorts to secure
profits , gave the market n better tone and
the felling pressure was lelaxetl. 'I he
brokers * . suppoFed to be lifting for Armour
nnd 1' . It. Wen re , began to buy fieely. 'I he
market qtilc-kly strengthened , shorts taking
fright , and there was an advance uf : ic
fiom the low price early , but the muikel
lost ti finctlon laur. May sold early nt
fiom ( % e to 5iR ! ) Hpllt , fell gradually tu
r'J'Jc , " 'en ' lenctvil to W\ic \ , and at the close
WIIH UOe.
The business In corn wns moderately
active , with wonknees the prevailing ten
dency. The.wcakncss was most pronounced
In ths beginning of the session , at the tlmo
when wheat wns taking Its early tum
ble , nnd In the latter part of thu day corn
waH Inclined to recover n llttlo of the cntly
decline on account ot the firmness which
wnH nhown by wheat In the latter half of
the session. The receipts being 711 cms , In
stead of f > 75 , as > estimated , was the chief
cause of the weakness near the beginning.
Compared with yesterday's closing prices , ,
December , January and May futures arc
each lie lower.
Oats were fairly active with the same
rntuo of prices as yesterday. Kr e offerings
early In the session Fcnt prices down. To
ward noon the market nil led and held com
paratively steady. llnulstrcet's report ,
showing a decrease In the visible supply of
M.OOO bu. , was one of the strengthening
feature. " . May opened nt 19'&c , sold nt 19'.4c ,
dropped to from 18e to We , und was'offsred
nt 19ViO ( at the close.
Provisions opened steady nnd hnd an
appearance of continuing the previous day's
advance for a short time , hut the shorts
did rot come for any more at the advance
nnd the market became heavy und ruled
weak until just nt the cloc n slight reaction
eet In , causing price ? to show n slight re
covery from the lowest. Compared with yes
terday's hist prices , May pork Is lOc lower ,
May lard 7',4c lower , and May ribs EC
lower.
KstlmtiUd receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
212 curs ; corn , 3SO cars ; oats , 1C" cars ; hog ? ,

CATTLE Tuesday , na usual , broufiht In
a good run of entile , ninety-one iresh loads
being reported In the ynrds. The receipts
for the two dnya previous were IlKht nnd
buyers hnd worked up n little nppetltc for
cnttlc. BO that the demand , generally speak
ing , was good , und the feeling on the mnr-
ket Improved.
There was quite n sprinkling of fat steers ,
the most of them cornfed native ? . While
there were some pretty decent cattle among
the offerings , there was nothing In the'way
of prime heavy beevss. The market on fnt
Hteers , as a whole , was not particularly
active , but still the demand was sufficient
to effect a clearance In reasonably good
season. The prices paid were about steady ,
though In some Instances salesmen thought
that they were paid strong prices for such
of their holdings as happened to strike
the buyers' fancy.
About one-third of the receipts consisted
of COWB nnd heifers. The market on good
MWS and heifers , sulttiblc for the holiday
trade , was strong , ami such of the offerings
as suited the demand brought way-tip
prices. The mnrkot on that class of stud
was nctlve , nnd the buyers were not long
In effecting a clearance. The common and
medium grades of cows nnd heifers wore
not In so good demand , and the market
wan low nnd no more than stendv.
The supply of stackers nnd feeders was
not large , and ns the light run of the past
few days had enabled operators to clean
up their holdings the demand was good.
Anything at all desirable commanded good
strong prices , nnd the trade on that class
of cattle was reasonably nctlve. Hepresen-
