JEFFERSON , la. , Dec. 12. ( Social , ) A
Jefferson local paper will print this afternoon
two columns of lnt rvlens with btirtrtcss and
professional men and farmers of Greene
county relallve to their opinions concerning
ths desirability of rcjubmltyng Ihe pro
hlbltory amendment. Out of sixty prominent
citizens Interviewed more than half are op
posed to resubml ? Ion. The majority of these
assert thai formerly they were In favor
of the measure , bul are < | omlng to look upon
rerubmUtlon as only anolher scheme to drag
the liquor question Into politics. Others re
gard the mulct law as much more effective
than the prohibition law that VM\S > In force
for ten years. Ex-Senator J. J. RusPell. one
of the keenest lawyers In Iowa , Is emphati
cally opposed to rcsubmlsslon on the ground
thai there Is no occasion for It. Ho says
It was never the Intent to Introduce police
regulations Into the constitution and thai In
Ihe prcsenl Instance It Is no more neces
sary than to Introduce police regulations In
the constitution for the control ot gambling
or houses of prostitution ; that If statutory
prohibition will not avail , neither will con-
t'tltutlonal prohibition , and Ihc sacrdnci3
of the constitution will be deslroyrd nnd
Its force depreciated. Judge Church Inclines
to the opinion that the mulct Inw has been
remarkably effective during the brief trial
given It and thai It might be wise to give It
further time. Many object to reeubmlMlon
on the ground that It would disturb politics
at a presidential election , a condition not
desired by the republican party.
