a drive against the market , and realizing sales

CATTLE The receipts of cattle today fell
short of yesterday's run by close to 1,000
head , but they were almost Identical with
the receipts of last Wednesday.
While the run wns not large , there was
nothing In the situation to encourage very
active buying. The packers complain that
the demand for beef is extremely llcht ,
the markets of the country bolng full of
cheap poultry , mution nnd pork. The
limited demand for the product linn mndo
buyers nt all markets weak nnd Indifferent.
There were some quite Rood beef steers
here today that In ordinary times would
have been attractive to buyers. The mar
ket , however , was very slow and dull , not
much If nny lower , but weak and unsatis
factory. The buyers seemed to want a few
cattlf , but the demand was not sulllclently
urgent to put any life Into the trade. The
market dragged along all day , but In the
end closed strong under the Influence of
more favorable reports from eastern mar-
The cows and heifers on sale numbered
twenty-flvo to thirty loads. The market
was In about the same condition us the
market on beef steers the demand fair
but the trade slow and the feeling weak.
Stockers were In liberal supply , there
being quite n string of westerns , and a good
many native stock cattle. Oood yearlings
and light stackers were in demand , there
being n few country buyers In , and the
market on that kind of stuff was just about
steady. The heavy cattle have not been
moving oft very freely during the two day's
past , and pome were carried over from
yesterday In Ilrst hands. The condition of
the market on fat cattle could hardly have
other than a dlscouraplng effect upon
heavy feeders. Still , the country keeps
buying. Some warmed up cattle shipped Infer
for beef sold to the feeders today , one

prices , the receipts for the Ilrst half of the week
being only about 33,400 head , ns against 00,325
for the same period of lasl week. Prices today
were steady , as a rule , although the demand
from most classes of buyers was nol very lartre.
Common , rough steers were salable nl from J3 to
J3.25 , medium to fair lots at from & 3.IV ) lo (3.75
and good lo choice at from } 4 fo J4.50 , with
transactions largely at from t3.fiO to J4.23. Plcnt }
of cholco heavy beeves Intended for the Christ
