In the afternoon Henry Miller , another Kort Omahi soli'ler , went on the stand for the pur pose of show Ins that Mrs. Graham , who has ilalmcd all along that her former luu'band , Lee , was dead , did not really know It. Dur ing the noon Intermission , he said , she came up to Thomas , the soldier who was on the witness stind Just before the noon adjourn ment , and asked him if Lve was In town Miller stood by and heard the query. C. J. Bst testified that nine > ecrs ngo he was running n newspiper In Nellgh , Neb. , and had an Interview with the plaintiff on. the occasion of her nrre t on the charge of killing her child. The first time he saw hei site told him that she had given birth to a child and that a man named Snansonay Ihe father. In a later Interview slip Bald Putney was the- father , and was present when the Infant was born. D. L. Wler of the city detective force testi fied that ho arrested the plaintiff last March at a dance In Hughes' hall on the charge of trying to shoot Leutzlnger at his hoiuc He also said he had seen her In two wine room ? . Mrs. Graham was put on 'the stand again by. the defense- and asked a large number of questions as to her actions during the days subsequent to her arrest last spring , the tendency being , to show that the troubles for which ahe claimed damages from Lcut- zlngcr were In reality caused by her diso bedience of the doctor's commards. Instead of slaying In be ! for six da > s after a sur- gioil operation had been perfotmed upon her , as bhe was ordered , she got up on the second end day. But wh = n asked whether she' did not run Mrs. Hamilton out of the hospital with a knife on the second night of her stay at the hospital , she denied It , saying they only had a little misunderstanding because Mrs. Hamilton would not give up her Jew elry. She likewise denied having had a fight with her mother and father at about the same time. A man named Flnnegan was put upon the- stand ? nd testified that ono night , while ho vvu ? rooming at Mrs. Graham's house , the latter took a revolver out of his over coat and left the house , saying she was going to find Leutzlnger. On cross-examina tion he unfoldeil a vast amount of haziness and uncertainty , but his first statement re mained uncontradlcted. There will ho no court today and the Jury will probably get hold of the cnso Friday. Six weeks ago I suffered with a very severe cold ; was almost unable to speak. Martin , general manager of the road , was called to Now York yesterday to m = et the directors , nnd it Is understood this matter will be con sidered. The plan , It Is announced , Is to run from Oskaloosa , where the Central now runs , to Pella , over the Rock Island , thence It Is proposed to build about eight miles ot new tn ck to Hovvell to connect with the \\'a- bash , over which the entrance to Des Moines will bo secured. ( Special Tele gram. ) The rumor gained currency today that it would be Impossible to submit to the approaching session of the legislature ths resolution looking to the resubmlsslon to the voters of the state the propoyltlon for an amendment of the constitution making pro hibition pait of the fundamental law of the state. The reason allcgsd was that the statutory requirement concerning publication of notice of the proposed action of the legls- Hturo had rot been compiled with. The law provides that In case a resolution of this kind has pasJ3d one legislature it shall bo published In two papers in each congressional district for the threj months last prior to the election at which the next legislature Is to be chosen. If , after this , It shall pass tin rext legislature. It t'hall be laid hfore ths voters of the state. It was stated that tha publication of the notlco had not been nude as required. Returns trom the storm of Tuesday night show that It did n vast amount of damage In other parts of the country as well as In Chicago and the % l- clnlty. Houses were blown down or un roofed by the gale at Cleveland , 0. , Coving- ton , Ky. , and a * many other points In Ohio , Indiana , Illinois and Michigan. The area of the storm was unusually widespread , and It made Itself felt over nearly halt of the coun try. In Plndlay and Lima , O , th ? towering oil derricks proved shining marks for the malice of the wind. A thousand derricks were blown down In the rindlay district , causing a lora ot $70,000 , while the farm houses , outbuildings anJ fences In the sur rounding coun'ry vvoro damaged to tbf amount of $80,000. At Lima 300 derricks were demolished , causing a loss ot $21,000 , while probably 1,000 more derricks were torn dovvn In other Notions ot the Ohio oil fields. In Hartford City , Ind. , 500 derricks were laid low , the total loss reaching $100.000. At ClmvvooJ , Ind. , the force of the storm was especially severe , several buildings of the Plttsburg Plato Glass works being demol ished and two men being Injured , Tli ? Moore , chief of the weather bureau , In n bulletin concerning the recent storm siys : "This dis turbance belongs to the type ot southwestern storms , which have their origin near the Texas coast during the fall and winter months , and move northward over the central valley nnd lake region , attended by heavy rain and snow and usually followed by severe cold waves. This storm was apparently formIng - Ing near the Texas const on the 23d , but did not appeir as a welt marked depression un til the afternoon of the 24th. It was pre ceded by a severe norther In Texas on the 23d , and Its developments retarded the se vere easterly movement of the cold wave which covered the country to the northwest. " The bulletin shows that the course of the storm was fully forecasted In special warn ings , Including storm signals Issued by the bureau. LOUISVILLE , Nov. 27. I SOUTH OMAtfA NEWS § It is the Intention ot the South Omaha Water Works company to push the work of construction along as rapidly as possible. Bonds have been Issued and , sohl , and ex pert engineers from thai east have been hero for a day or two lobklng over the ground. The directors of the company at a recent meeting ordered w.ork to be pushed as fast as possible. It Is expected that work on the additional wells proposed at the' foot of O street , will be pushed , as a St. Louis firm has the contract and has been wired to get ready at once to continue the drilling. The mains of this company will come up L street and 0 street , and wlll run straight from the river to the stock yards. One or more of the packing houses will be supplied with water by the new company. The new company Intends to bo able to supply all comers by spring. Collins , local superin tendent for the American Water Works com pany , that Tangeman a few- nights ago de liberately broke a red lantern which wan placed to protect a trench In Drown park and then beat the water works watchman be cause he protested. It Is expected that charges will be flled by Mr. Collins soon. Tangeman was discharged some tlmo ago for getting Into a fight at police headiiimters with a brother officer.
