dicated that the union was in a prosperous
financial condition , Inasmuch as there was

Crane of the First Methodist church , who
spcko on "Church Finances. " He paid that
Christianity treated people as men and not
as boys , and it was the universal tendency
of human nature to take advantage of this
iberallty. It was the Jewish law that one-

) e reserved for the support of the church.
The Christian church liberated Us members
from any such law , but It was not without
an understanding that that amount or more
should be voluntarily contributed. Yet few
of the members of modern churches even
approached the example set by the Jews. It
was a general cry that the church was too
expensive. The speaker cited an array of
Igtires to show the sophistry of such an
allegation. The Christians of the United
Slates expended ? 171 for religious pur-
loses whilethey were spending
510,000 for other purposes. The 37,000 clergy-
nen In the United States were paid $0,000-
000 a year , while 35,000 lawyers were paid

expended $12,000,000 for dogs , and an In
