City Electrician Schurll has prepared an
estimate ot the cost of pro\'ldlnl on electric
plant to run the elevators all 10 provide dcc-
trlc lights for the city hal , the public library
building and No. : engine house. The estimate
Is a comrehensl'e document , which gives
the comparative cost of all the principal ap'
plances now In Use and leaves the council
to decide which method I prefers. Mr.
Schurll concludes that the city can save
about $1,000 a year by putting In its own
Illant.
Estimates are submitted on three different
electric generating plants for the electric
lights. The first consists oC a dIrectly connected .
nected maChinery arrangement using horizontal -
zontal hlgh-sppel engines and muttpolar
( lynamos. Thl will cst $ I,82U to place In
operation. The second estimate Is on I
similar plant . the only difference being In
the use oC vertical engines Instead of hori-
zontal. The coat of this plant would he
$ : ,700. The third plant designates belted
machinery , using medlum-Rpeed Corlss En-
gines , and the cost Is estimated at $5,880
'
When the direct connection Is used the generator -
prater armature shaft Is connete,1 , directly

\Ith the engine shaCt without the use of
spurS gearing or friction nuhleys.
There are two estmates on the cost of the (
hoIsting plant , for the elevators which amount
to $7,000 ant $5.000 , f'spectvly. The expenditures -
penditures for wiring are estimated at $1,250
and for lamps $325. The cost of oluerating (
' oleratng
the Illant , eXclUsive en110)'es , Is placed at
$2,333 per 'ear. Including 6 per cent interest
on the cost of the plants , the electricIan
figures that I will cost the city $ ; fI3 per
ear to do the
year work with its own plant .
Untlet' the resent system the city pays
$2,801.59 for electric light rentals for (3)5
buildings. The cost ot running the elevators ,
otc . brought up the total cost In 1891 I to
.
$6,517.59 , or IOOt.59 more than the estimated
estmated
cost under the preposed arangelnont.
The machinery recormon.IEd orangemenl . the electrIcian -

(
a load of 2.500 poun.h' . . exclusive of the cage wih ,
at a Ipced of frOI 225 to 300 feet pel

Whie I Is not likely that any acton will
bo taken toward putting In the 111ant this
year on account of the
lack of funds , It is I
likely that the recommendations of Mr.
Schu II 11 eventually be adopted , 11.
a very strong sentment In the council In
favor of taking tile first step In the line of
municipal ownership b ) acquiring an electric

jectons to the Iure' nt stem , which I Is
claimed that
the proposed plan would ol'er-
como ant Mr. Sehurlg believes that the
change would not only he
, an economy but
would give much improved sorvic ,
The greatest objection to the present ss-
tem Is the elevator service , which has neve-
been satist.ictory. The elevators have been
I'veral tm(1 overhauled and repaired , but
they continue to act like balky horses , and
no elevator man can run them satisfactorily
until he has become accustome.1 satsCactorl .
culiarities. I II' ' a peculiar fact that after a
man has 10stered the Intricacies of one of
the city hal elevator , he cannot handle the
other any better than befol . Mr. Schllg
has made a thorough study of the pret"nt ele-
valor svstel and Is confident that he can en
rearrange the machinery that a much 1m-
pro\d service - will be . arrorded.
