Evans , who met his leath In such a mysterious manner on the river bank near Osage OctobEr 14. I Is one ot the strangest cases In the annals of Iowa. Prof. Evans was a young man , born and reared near \VI- lamsburg , In Iowa county. He lull secured a liberal education , all was the prIncIpal of the high school at Osace. He had bright prospects before ' him , and his sudden death has been a sari . blow to hIs relatives . His brother tells substantially the following story : Two or three weeks ) before hIs death ho had purchased reVolver and had been In the hlblt of taking a stroll down to the rIver bank after school hours and engaging tar- get practice. no had round a suitable place whtch ho visied' ' each time , as the bullets In a tree shmowed Monday evening October H , getting hIs revolver , he went down to his accustomed place au the river bank. 10 did 'tol ' appear In' 'tho'chol ' rOm the ri'exCrnern- lng , but no Inquiries' were made , I being supposed thal perhaps he was Ill and would be present In the afternoon. When the afternoon - noon came and he did not put In appearance - ance his room was visited to ascertaIn the cause. Hero the discovery was made that he hal not been In his room since Monday evon- Ing. A search was instituted and his body was found on the river bauk. This coroner at once summoned a jury and au InQuest was held. Two bullet holes were found In the head , and when all tire testimony was taken and summed up the jury was about ready to find a verdict that he hall committed suIcide - cide When the body was being prepared for shipment to Wiiamsburg for burial In the famiy lot It was dlscoverel that there was a third wound , a bullet havIng been fired through the heart The coroner's jury then returned a verdict of murder. After the body was taken to Wihiiarrmsburg a post mortem was held , when It was discovered that there had been no htmorrhage , either external or Internal , from the wound In the breast indicating time shot had been tired after death , and after circulation of the blood had stopped , thus disproving the SUICI ' the- or ) ' , as It would bo nn utter impossibility fOr one to fire two fatal shota Into the head and then send a bullet through the heart. He had on the Sunday before hIs death written her a long and cheerful letter. telling her of hiD plans for the future and moro particularly of what he expected to do during the coming weell. There was not a single word In the entire letter to Indicate that he was 11seouragel , or even contem- plated taking his life . He had no emmemles no rivals In love and so far as known now there was no reason In the world why anyone should desire his life. Time object wars not robbery , as his watch and money were not tiistnmrbed.
