There Is another criminal trIal In store
for Avlngton A. Edgington , the young medIcal -
cal ( student ot Avoca who , with his mother ,
Mrs. Jennie M. Elglngton : , and his uncles ,
W II . and O. 1\1. Cuppy , have been found
guilty ot trallli .In connection with a pension
deal and fined amounts aggregating ; $ : ; .000 I
by Judge Woolson at the United States court
When young tIglngton l was tried last April I
hl testified that UI' to within a few days
i
betore the trial oC the case was commenced .
he did not know that his lather hall any :
other name than Francis ML Edglnglon. Ills :
grandmother knew at his tather's numerous '
aliases , but had , never tolll young E.Iglng-
ton or his mother about them It was not
until three or tour days before the commence-
lIIent ot the trIal that she unsealed her lips
and told them the secret she hall kept so
long allli so well , hoping that she might
help her grandson and his , loather out of
the trouble Into which they had tallen. The
appearance ' at the old lady , Irs. Perkins ,
with the feebleness Incident to 78 years ot
life caused quite a Etnatlon by her story.
At that time the government authorities
were unable to shake her testimony by
cross - examinatlon or the Introduction ot. .
other witnesses Young EdElngton went
l'pon the stand In his own behalf and corroborated - I
roboratell the olel ladY'1\ statements lIe told
his story In a way that called forth the' '
ndmlratlon ot the spectators , giving the details - I
tails ot hIs tather's death and burial , antI
defeated all the efforts ot the district attorney -
torney and his assistants to mix him upon
on cross-exandnation. But when the author-
plea introduced other witnesses to rebut his
statements there were several grave tIls-
clepancles noted between ids testimony and
that ot the other witnesses. The jury
brought In 11 verdict at guilty and the young
man was fined the sum at $1,500.
E. C. Brown , the pension examiner and
District Attorney 'ullen claim to have found
evidence that the statemeut or Edgington
that he did not know of his tather's multi-
pllclly ot names . until three or four days be-
tara the commencement at the trial was false ,
and known by him to be false at the time It
was made Brown filed - an information
charging EtIglngton with perjury , and Deputy
Marshal [ Eller went to Iowa City where he
IJ ! studying medicine , to arrest him lie was
arrested yesterday , , morning and taken to
Burlington where he Is to be given a pre-
IImlnary hearing before the United States
commissioner. It he Is bound over he will
probably be given a trial at the next term
ot court In Des Moines
. .
The information alleges that EIJglngton
committed perjury when he said that his
tather's name was Francis M. Edglngton .
and that he did not know him by any other
name than Edgington until a few days
before he was put upon oath ; that ha did not
know his lather by the nallle at Perkins , .
or Jesse 1'ranlelln Perkins until that time
