three seconds. The race was over a triangular ! ; -
lar course laid on Long Island sound , each
leg oC two miles , and the course was sailed
over twice , making a total ot twelve tijilos .
The Lilliputian yachts were sent away at
12:30. : They were flagged to make their first
heading for a point east by south , halt north ,
which was a reach with the wind southe3st. I
thelwynn was compelled to make a tack I
more than Spruce before she got around the '
first mark , hut she got there three minutes
seventeen seconds ahead ot the chailenger.
On the next leg It was a broad roach In
which poInt ot sailing t'le IIrltlsher was said
to be at her best. hilt she did not crawl up
on her rival. On the contrary she lost fltly-
tour seconl1 The last leg was a close reach
and on Il Spruce gained ! ; on Ithelwynn six
seconds , allll when they started on the final
