Now InS Rudolph , In his' great chagrin
and dismay , had hlnuel forgotten or at least
neglected to warn the count ot } 'lstenburg
that his sister , l'rincess
I'rlnces Oara , was residing
at the caste Zenda : for I was her favorite
resort and she often retired from the court
and spelt many days there alone. There rime
was now with two of her ladles ! . a smal re-
tnue of servants , 'and ' no more than half a
dozen glards : and ' when Count Nlkolas came
to the gate , I being then after 9 , she hat
gone to her chamber and sat before the mil- ,
ror , dressed In a loose white gown and with I
her ruddy hair unbound and heating over
her shoulders : and she I was re.tlng , an old
story book containing tales of Helen or
Troy , of Cleopatra , of iherermice . and other
lovely ladles , very elegantly related and em-
belshed with fine pictures. And the pm-in-
cess , being very much absorbed In the stories ,
did not hear Dr notice time arrival of the
counl's compnn , but continued to read whie
Nlkolas roused the watchmen and the brIdge
was let down anti the steward summoned.
Then Nlkolu took time steward aside and
showed him tIme klng's order , bearing time
klng's seal ; anll the steward slhough both
greatly astonIshed and greatly grieved could
not deny the letter or the seal but declare
himself ready to obey and to surrender the
caste ; and the sergeant In command of the ,
guard said the Iamej ; but , they added , sInce
limo princess was In the castle . they must
inform her of the mater and take her coma-
mands.
"Aye 110. " said Nikolas . sitting down In the
great Imall . "Tell her not to bo disturbed ,
but to give me the honor of being her host
for as long as she will : and say that I wl
walt upon lmcr If I be her p'easure. " Anti
he Bmled to think of the anger and scorn
with which Osra would receIve time tidings
when the steward delivered them to her.
In this respect the event did not fail short
at his expectations ; for she was so Indllnant
and aghast that , thinking oC nothing but the
tidlmmgs . she tilIng away the book and crIed ,
"Send the count here to me , " and stood walt.
log for him there In her chamber , In her
white gown and with her hair unbound and
flowing down over her should rs. And when
he came she cried "What Is thi. my lord ? "
and listened 10 his story wltb parted lips and
flashing eyes , and thus read the klng's letter
and saw time klns's seal. And her eyes hilled
with tears hut she lashed them away wlh
her hand Then the count said , bowing to
her as mokingly as he had bowed to her
brother :
"I. Iq thn fnrtlnn of Ihn , lIen mnll."p-
"Yea ; : ; my ; ; ' lord : ' -a " y' ; pi ; ; time - - gaume , "
said 'e .
Ills eyes were fxell upon her , and It seemed
to him that she was moro beautiful : In her
whie gown and with her haIr unbound over
her shoulders than he had ever felt her to bo
before and he eye her closely. Suddenly
silo looked at 111n. and for a moment he
averted tls eyes blt he looked agaimi and
her eyes met his. For several moments she
stool rigid and motionless . Then she said : !
"My lord . time king has lost the castle at I
Zenda , which Is time home and cradle of our I
hommse. I was scarcely the king's alone to :
lose. lave I no title In It ? .
, . tle I
" ' and It Is
"I was the klng's , madame now I
mine. " smIled Nlkolas.
"Vehl , then It I yours. " said she and
taking a step toward him , she said : "Have
you a mind to venture I again my lord ? - "
"I would venture It only against a great
stake " said ' te . smIlIng stIll . whie his eyes
were fixed on her face and marled every
change In the color of her cheeks. I
"I can play at dice as well as time king " I
she cried "Are wo not all gamblers , we
Elpbbergs ? " And sbe laughed bitterly. i
"Dut what would your stake be ? " be asked I
sneerlngly.
Princess Osra's face was now very pale but
her voice did net tremble and she did not
flinch , for the honor of her house and of nle
throne was as sacred to her as her salva.
