The news or Valkyrlo's refusal to sail over
the coune off Sandy hook tOlhy was received -
ceived bore too hate for comment In the
evenln papers. The entire pess ot Lonihon. . ,
however ha\e long dwelt upon the crowd-

pretty generally taken the positon that I
Is IIJosslble to ha\'o a fair race In New

stronger than time nollce . they have no rIght I
to blame an Engsh uenteman for declining

of such a scene. It Is very conceivable that
neither the nation nor the owner of De-

dotted to them. hut they will be foolish to
Pretend that the owner ot Valkyrlo shirked
the contest for which the vessel was built.
lie wanted It , bnl he wanted It fair and

tecton , he wIthdrew from the Irrepressible

The Chronicle : Valkyrle's people will not
rIsk the lives of her crew among the pitiless
swarm. 'Ve think they were right. I Is
better to toe the mark and then contemptuously -
ously give up the contest until there Is an act
of congress to keep the course clear or until
soma step Is taken to Insure somethIng hike
fair commihitlons. We suppose this will end
the rather ghastly farce called the international -
tonal yacht race ot 1895 , and probably all
Anglo.American yacht racing on the other
sIde ot the Atlammtic. We at all events can
hOlst that we can show our American friends
how to conduct a great sporting event wIth
decency and order.
The Standard : No one can blame Dunrayen
for refusing to sail under conditions which
reulered It ImpossIble that the race 5honl,1 ,

'fho regret wi be as great on one side ot the
Atlantic as on the other at the unfortunate
terminaton of the struggle , especially as I
Is likely to be a very long time before any
Drltsher wl go to the expense ot building I
craft to race for the cup when the condItions
are slch as to render the result a mere matter -
