Welch , a refined and educated woman 25
years of age , called at police ileadquarters
and told Police Matron Cummings that she
was sent there by a physIcIan to be exalrlined
as to her mental condition. She told the
matron that lIen family and friends were
Incessantly accusing her of being crazy , and
that the reproaches had so worried her that
she had called on a doctor , who referred her
to tile poiIe , Dr. Savlhle , tbe city physicIan ,
was notIfied by telephone that his preseulco
at the statIon ssas wanted to examine a
demented woman. lie was busy , so he saId ,
anti did not heed tile thrgent appeals that
were made. lie did not visIt tile city jaIl
until afternoon , When lie dlii reach time
place lie made a hurrIed examination of the
unfortunate young svonian and pronounce'I
her suffering from melancholia , but not of
the acuie kind. lie found tilat her mind was
badly dIseased anti that alto Imagined that
voices were always talking' to her , callIng
her crazy , and that the ever-present fiends
put drugs In lien food. The city physician
then told her to go to lien room and visIt
him tile followIng day. In tile meantime her
sister , Mrs. J , II. Heron , at Lexlngtoll , Nob. ,
was notified and she replied that thio girl
had better be sent to an insane asylum. Dr.
Savillo "was very busy for two days and gave
the matter no attention. " Thursday nIght

by hysterical cries from Mary Welch's apart-
mont. They found her almost unconscious ,
but she managed to say that she hail taken
laudanum to tlrive away tile voices that
were abusing her. Tile city physician was
notified of the precarious condition of the , ,

assistance untIl 12:10 : a. m.
It was with great difficulty that she was
resuscitated , and then the patrol wagon woe
called and the demented woman was taken
to the Presbyterian hospItal at 1 o'clock
Friday doming. The matron was not told
of the mental condition of the patient , and
svhilo the nurse was attending to her dutIes
early Friday nlorrfing , the girl escaped , Th
hospital authorities are very Indignant that
a person with an acute mania should be
placed In their Institution , and wIthout even
the fact being made known to them.
The authoritIes were at once notlflsd of
the woman's escape , but took no steps to
locate her until Saturday morning at 10
o'clock , when sbo called at her stopping
place. They were told that she had gone
out In search of work , and late in the
afternoon Saturday an offIcer found her at
her lodgings and took her Into custody. She
was taken before Dr. Saville , who acconi.
panled her to Dr. Tliden of the Insantly
board , who imiatle a thorough examinatiomi
of the woman , and pronounced her case to
ho one of suicidal mania , She was taker ,
to the county jail , anti will be detained there

Jail a week ago last Monday and examined

that she had attempted suicide and also that
she had hallucinations , but not of the uicuto
order , Friday I was notIfIed that she had
escaped from time hospItal , and found that tile
poor creature had gone about time cIty bolcing
for employment. I dId not think she would
do herself any bodily harm , and Shturday I
hail lien brought to me by an officer , after
which I took her before Dr. Tiiden , who saW
she was sufferIng from suIcIdal nania. I had
her sent to the county JaIl for detention until
the proper papers arrive to convey 11cr to
Lincoln.
