Then In 18 ! he came with hIs Valkyrie I. a boat In which ) he had no very great amount of confidence , and which was easily disposed of by VIlant. And now .he Is hero with a third Valkyrie , Dunraven , his skillful designer Wallon and his expert skipper , Cranfeld , have studied New York bay Its wind and tides and Amlrlcal yachts , anti after their experience oC two years ago , returned to England to again naive a yacht to send for the cup. They apparently concluded that : a yacht of rltlh 17P3 and characteristics could never win A series oC races In New York bsy. Consequently the shaped their effort to produce a yacht which woUld defeat Vigilant. The result h that the English sloop now here Is nothing more or less than an improved V' lant. That Dtender contains many English . wrinkles ! a Vlkyle tines AmerIcan Is certainly - tln ' true Whlh abroad on Vigilant last ! ! year lerreschof was greatly Impressed with the Britannia , and naturally , for that yacht Is perhaps the finest all-around single sticker ever built . She certainly Is oC all the English - Ilh produetona , even Including Valkyrie. In laying down Defender lerresehof must have hid Briannia more or leI In mind , as the bosoms of tha two hoots are Identcal , twentY-Jhree feet. As this Is I falling away oC three feet In respect to be3m from Vigilant - ant It shows Jerreschol thought the limit oC beam had ben reached , anti perhaps passed. In other respects than brain does , DeCender remind one of the prince of Wales' yacht : but t:11 : exact beam measurement Is the most striking That the two yachts will be splendidly handled Is certain I Is quite a general custom , even among yachtsmen , to yield the palm In this respect to the British tars. Defender has a crew composed of young hermen from the coat oC Maine. They were drilled for weeks on Colonla before Defender was launched , and have developed Into a very fine crew. There has been no criticism on the manner In which Defender has been handled thus ! ar. In the races two years ago Vigilant's sails were certainly handlcrl better than were Valkyrie's. This was particularly true In the mater oC head selt' . AND WHICh ! WILL WIN ? Prophecy al to the outcome oC the races Is futile. Nevertheless there are some comparisons - fute. parisons oC Interest whIch can be most In- enlously twisted to suit the tapte. First , as fer Valkyrie : She comes over almost an unknown quantity. Less t actually known about her than any beat which ever came acron Two years ago Valkyre : came over after two months oC royal racing In all kinds qC weather , almost daily , and against such cracks as Briannia all Satanlta. Everything - thing about her was throughly known , and when under her racing rIg on this "ide ! Cran. field sent her over the line , knowing just what she would do under the circumstances. Anti Americans knew about what she could do. Next to nothing Is 1(01 n about the present Valkyrie on this side. But there Is one victory oC hers cn the ether side that has formed the basIs of very disagreeable concluslens on this side. ThIs Is her wIn over BrItannia antI Aisa , In which she was first home over a course oC fifty mites : . by elghten minutes and twent-e\'en seccnds , Briannia bclmmg seond. liritanimia beng ! Great Ilritain's best boat , ths ! victory has naturally given the Englishmen a great deal of confidence In ValkyrIe But It seems that durIng the race Brlt3nnla and Aisa , very warm rIvals , Indulged In a great deal oC huffing. Taking this Into consideration It Is but fair to SAY that ValkyrIe was abut fifteen minutes better than Britannia In the fifty miles , all In welher Just suited to imer aIrs very Jlmlar to those her designer had built her'to do bulnes with In New York bay. Now , assumIng that VIgilant ! had been In that race : I Is very probable that she would have dOle at least as well at Brltannia . and possibly even better . for . as a result of all the races between these two yachts In English water last year , I must be al- mlted ; ' and generally is . thatVlgimnt Is as geol a bat as Britaimnia. : Shi certlluy : Is tn : the kind oC weather that prevalel on the day oC Valkyrie's fifteen-minute vIctory. , /aking this as a basis , can DeCender. beat Vigilant , , , fifteen . minutes , , I.r , fifty _ mulled ? She shouhl be able'tU uo thIS In orer to equal I Vahkyria's victory over liritannla. The yachts have not yet bad a race of fry mies , The 'c6urses 'n the' waters on this side do ' n L pr vle 'fpr' ' : s.\ 'I 'ng. a 'Coiltest. ! But ' De'- fendel' has' repeatetly defeated Vlglant'seven or , eight minutes. In . thirty miles , a , performance - ance practically .on a par with Valkyrle's. Then again , It.m'ay . be argued , ' o0 the other hand , , that several times VIgilant has held pefetmder , aWay down to nuich.less . than seven mlnules. But ) las against this It can be said that Vigilant Is Improved over her ' 93 Corm a great deal Someexperts rate her as ! five r1lnutes faster In thirty miles than she was two years ago I they are correct I would seem that Defender has at least not Ihe worst of the comparison. Forty thousand dollars has been expended this year to make Vigilant go' faster. Ceranly \ she ought to be somewhat Improved. Cer\a\aly \ Another point In favor of Defender , lies In the fact that Valklrle will have to give her a tmo ahiowance. The racIng length oC a yacht on which the question of tIme allowance - ance Is based Is obtalnod by adding the square root of the sail area to the length ou the load water line and dIviding by two Ifender Is right at eighty-nine feet on the water line . Valkyrie Is undoubtedly more than this aid , whim the . sail areas about equal Valkyrie having In reality not much more than Defender , the former must give the latter a time allowance . possibly as much as two minutes. But I has always been the other way. The American boats , have al- ways been a little longer and have always carried more canvas , giving the visitor a tIme allowance. But they never suffered for IL mind I Is a rather nnnleasant nasal- blil - ' that ; t ; perhmapsm - ; Va t.yrleuw I not : . - - : ValkyrIe , as has been said , Is larger In every \I'a1 thap Is Deenle , _ As' a bulk she , looks and Is surprisingly larger . With 'pc- tcaly the Mme sail spread car the big- bodied hull be driven a $ fast as the small one ? Well , next Saturday evening we will know more than wo do now. AIES OP TJITIN.L LEAGUE.
