A resolution hy Edward ! provIded for an
amendment to the rules by which the NJrth-
western university oC Evanston , III. , the Massachusetts -
sachusetts Institute oC Technology and the
Polytechnic Institute of Troy , N. Y. . be added
to the list oC colleges who.o gra"'Jatls ! are
eligible to teachers certificates without ex-
nmlnatlon. Cramhlctt rcgtlercd ! a vigorous
objection , on the ground that the resolution
was for the purpose oC helping out certain
grad'uates of these schools who had been
ejected as teachers but who hall deliberately
refused to take the Ixamlnlllons. !
It then leaked out that the High schoJI
committee had recommended several teach-
ers ! for election who had never taken an examination -
animation or received a certificate The
teachers ! were elected by the hoard on ther !
recommemlaUons. After they had been
elected the teachers had simply laughed at
the committee when they were requested to ,
take the examlnatons. ! As the teachers were
already ul\der \ contract the board was com-

Two excited Frenchmen made things lively
for a short time at the unIon depot yesterllay.
They formed the center of a large and Inter-
esting crowd that quickly collected to ascer-
tain the cause of the fracas , In which a
woman , a grip and a board bill seemed to
take equal parts. The custodian of the grip
was Leon Neuven , who keeps a boarding
house at 203 South Ninth street . and the
name of the other party was King. King
and his wife had been lodging with Neuron
for I few days and In the hurry oC their de-
.parture for Los Angeles ! , Ca ! . , forgot to 1-
Quhlate their bill , which amounted to $6.
Neuven thought the alight upon their part Intentional -
tl'ntlonal , and Just before the departure of
the 4:35 : train for Denver he appeared upon
the scene anti quickly ! pr pared for action.
There was nothing In sIght but a small shiny
valise , but Ncuven thought that was better
than I promise , so he quickly appropriated It.
Time sped onward while the court language
of the most pole people on earth rolled forth
from the excited trio till the ticket office
windows rattled. Officer Fleming tried to adjust . '

until the bell rang that King at length of-

met with an accIdent last evening ! that may
prove fatal. .
MI' . Yates Is an employe at the Equitable
Trust company , which has offices on the I
third , floor of the Nebraska National bank
building. lie had been at work durIng the
afternoon and upon finishing his labors for
the day he discovered that the elevator vas
not running , owIng to the fact that It waR
Labor day. The elevator Is oC the Halo
pattern and Is one of the old style , with
cables ! running rough the front oC tims
car and Cram the top to the bottom of the
uilding. The car was at the bottom oC tin
shaft. Opening the door at the third land-
lag Mr. Yates reached around and pulled 01
one of the cable In order to bring ' up the car
that he might rIde down The car came up
and was passing him when he threw his body
upon the platform . hut was unable to get
upon his leet. Realizing ; that In a moment
more he would he crushed between the floor
of tim car and the floor above , Mr. . Yates
threw himself off the platform , Intending
evidently to strike upon the floor below .
Missing his footing , he slipped ! and fell down
the elevator shaft , a distance or fIfty feet , '
and wnB found In an unconscious condition a'
few moments later by the janitor oC the
building.
lIe was placed In a carriage and taken tu
the residence of Dr. Ieabolh' . where he now
is. I No bones were broken , but he was
blllFel1 and frightfully cut. The main Injury
Is a concussion of the spine. His condition

Is extremely critical. In the night Mr.
Yates recovered consciousness , but was too
