" Yesterday's program In the Omaha tntor-
atato lawn tennis tournament wa carried out
as gririouticed. Nothing 101 remaln but the
1nal round of the lngle8. which will bt
played , nIT this afternoon. There WAS a large
number of people Ilrtsent yeslerlay , both
morning and Ifernoon , who fully appreciated
. . the efforts of tht players.
I In the morning all of the remaining ties In
; i the lngles , prelminary to the s nil.flnai
round were settled. M. Colpttzer and W.
Jlannl8ter retired . and six tics were played ' ol
In the court Those who survived for the
afternoon had eli COSY time of I In
S the mornIng. I.'arQuhar only gave Con i
Young an opportunity to capture three games i
and wa unfortunate Into tile bargain In I
spraining his ankle during th , second set. I
Auatln requlrld but thirteen games to defeat .
feat McCague. Slocum had a similar contest
'wlh Iurcy Young , and Waltlu'r scored a
love Ict' and another. In which he had some
alight trouble from Caidwell. In this match
the Omaha man tried to 'LaWfOrd " until
he found that al his balls were killed at
the net. 10 oily took eight point ! II the
first sot. and only once gtit UI ) to deuce.
, \tCI changing ends he tried the lobbing

twenty.elght points lu thu second set to
Waldler's thirty-aix.
LOCUI UEI"AULTS TO WAI ER.
In the afternoon the game that was put
up by the Chicago men was rather a disp-
. i.ir. Vb'aidnor
pointment. 11. Waldler started out with
considerable ] vigor and In spite of his oppoC
lant's very accurate and careful game ho had
little dlllu1) ' In capturing the lnt two sets.V
'Valdnor wa active as a cats springing
around the court and up Into the air , and
bringing down SflO excelent smashes from ,
n great height The third and fourth set I
were very lstess , Slocum maintained his '
careful , easy game never attempting to kill
a bill . and Waldner did not seem to have
the energy In him which he had shown be-
fore. For the third fet this was 10 surprise .
for I was natural for him to rest alter his
hard work but when he did not show any
better tennis II the fourth lot and let tuls go
after the other with even a smaler number
of games to his credit I began to be WllisG
pored that after all : Ir. SOCUI ] was going
to pul Off the match.
At two sets alt . however Slocum walked
up to the umpire and announced his intention
to default In Mr. Wahlner's favor. I was ,
some time .for the spectators realized ,
what had but
happened , they gradually began :
to thin out nud went home. '
The other seml.fnal was played off In an L . ,
adjoining court. beginning about half al hour
earlier. arquhar was suffering from a very
lame toot the result of his morning's acci-
acc-
dent , ant was not able to make the lIght
that he otherwise would have done Austin
had little difficulty In disposing of him. In I
Bplte of all the rushing that the Iowan tried
to Impart Into the game at the start.
The fInal round of the singles will bo
played ( this afternoon . commencing promptly .
at 4:30. : between De Hey Austin of Omaha
and n. L. Waldner of Chicago. Uoth of these I
men play a vigorous , aggressive game and
when they meet the contest Is hound to be a
lively one. Whether either of them will be
willing to tale the same lumber of chances
against the other l he would In a match
with a more careful opponent Is a matter
which cannot be decided until they Ol'pcse
