CHICAGO , July S3. Despite plenty of
bullish news the wheat nnil corn mnrkets
were wenk todny nml closed with respective
losses of Ic nnd Tie per 1)U. Outs were nleo
wenk , but less FO thnn the more pretentioiiH
neighbors , the declines In Its active future
being limited to less than \io \ bu. Provi
sions suffered from bear attacks nnd
cheaper hotss.
Whcnt Htartcd weak nnd remained BO de-
sjilto the fact thnt there wns much bullish
news alloat. The Chicago receipts , as In
spected Into store , amounted to seventy-one
car loads , four of which graded No , 2. On
the correFpondliiB day of last yenr the In
spection wns 725 carp , 532 of which Inspected
Into the contract grade. Minneapolis nnd
Duluth received 2r S cars , compared with 311
Innt year. The total receipts at the western
primary markets were 374,000 bu. . against
1,174,000 bu. n. year ago. The one bearish
fenturo of the dny's movement wn the
small Atlantic port shipments , consisting of
only 14uC7 bu. of wheat nnd 13.851 bbls. of
( lour. The summing up of the olllclul report
of the world's exports last week was fi , X-
000 bu. , compared with shipments of fltt7,000
bu. from the same places the- week before.
The cnbl a , however , w iv dlnapp I ting , the
crop reports were fnvor.ible anil the crowds
of fcalpers nil seemed to be long. lirau-
Btrect's statement of the week's changes In
the world's stocks , showing u decrease ol
2K0,000 ! bu. , caused nn advance ofvs \ per
bu. when It was made known , but the I4c
disappeared ngnln nbout ns quickly as It
had come Into sight , giving the scalpers nn
excuse to grip the prollt In the He rise.
Another diversion was made In favor of the
bull side by the reported taking for ship
ment from here of 200.000 bu. of wheat , of
which 100,000 bu. was to go lo Toledo , but
oven that feature of the present situation
created no lasting Impression , Wheat
started with September from C8',4c down to
G7T4c , ns against CSc nt the close of the
market yesterday. After gradually sagging
to 67c It recovered to CSlic , nnd twice sub
sequently It tumbled back to G7ic , nnd rose
ngnln to the previous highest' point , reachIng -
Ing GS'/ic on Hrndstreet's bulge , but always
tending quickly back to around the opening
llgures , and toward the close the market
wns In the most bearish mood , the price
getting down to GT'.ic. The closing quota
tion was C7',4c to 67c.
Corn again wns forced to come under the
Influence of the line crop prospects. The
day's receipts numbered 298 cars , nnd the
quantity Inspected out was 20I.XIO ( bu. Hrnd-
strcet reported the stock 1.109,000 bu. less
than It was a week ago , but the fine
new crop prospects overshadowed every
thing else nnd caused weakness to be the
predominating feature of the dny's business.
September from 41o and 44Hc had a tem-
narnry advance tu 45c. In the afternoon It
became very heavy nnd wns llrst at Its low
est price ns the session eloped. September
declined to 44c and closed at 44',4c to 4 Hie.
In oats trading was of n very ordinary
character. The feeling wag comparatively
steady early In the session , deriving what
little ndvnnce there occurred In the higher
cash mnrket , The speculative market de
clined toward the close with wheat. Sep
tember opened nt 22c. sold at 22 c ,
dropped to 22'/4c and rested nt from 22'Ac
to 22c.
Provisions lost more thnn all they gained
yesterday , and at the close the following
were the respective losses : Pork , 42i/.c :
lard , lOc per 100 Ibs. , and ribs 20c per 100
Ibs. The market was nt Its weakest near
the end. The hog receipts were 17,000 head
but prices were quoted 15c lower than on
the day before.
Estimated for Wednesday : Wheat 31
cars ; corn , 120 cars ; oats , 70 cais ; hogs , 20000
head.

Statistically , lemons nre fuld to be In a
stronger position than for several years past nt
this season , cays the New York Journal of Com
merce. and It Is held that only nn ordinary nctlve
summer demand Is required to cause prices to ad
vance sharply. Last yenr tills time there were
406.650 tKixes on t.ie way to United States ports ,
the bulk licing for New York. In 1893 , at the
same date , the quantity afloat for the American
market wns 4..6.10 < ) Inixex. At the piesent time
the slock nllont and loading Is placed nt R30.IKH )
boxes , or 17ti,000 lers thun nt the corresponding
dale last year nnd 220.000 le. s than on th ? same
day In 1S9.1. The short ehlpmen's nre attributed
to a partial crop failure. Induced by the extreme
cold weather In March , this year , which caused
the young fruit In many districts to drop al
most entirely from the trees , and left the over-
hfnds In protected districts to virtually supply
the requlremi-nts of the consuming trnde. It
hns been reported recently thnt steamers char
tered for Sicilian ports find It dllllcult to procure
enough fruit to fill out their cargoes , nnd nre
obliged to take general merchandise. Again It
Is reported thnt had the early July trnde here
been up to expectations und thut hud prices ad
vanced Instead of declining , there would lm\e
been less of a shortage In the July shlpmcn s.
t.ie Intimation being that supplies are held back
awaiting a better market In this country. Quo-
