The excavation for an eight-story building for the publishing1 house of George A. Plimp ton , at the southwest corner of Fifth avenue and West Thirteenth street , tays the New York Herald , has again disturbed the slum bers of one of the ancient "creeks that bore the salted sea to pleasant inland farms , " ur , to speak by the card , to the gardens of the sturdy Dutch burghers of this Island many years ago. The apparition of this Stygian stream , whenever It appears , Is a costly one to build ers , as it has to bo driven back to Its chan nel by sinking ; caistons down to the solid rock and raising brick piers on a foundation of concrete or by other equally expensive meth ods. In the present excavation the con tractors sank caissons down to the rock at a depth of twenty-seven feet. For a depth of about thirteen feet from the surface the soil Is heavy sand , but below that It is a black mud of the consistency of silt , while pools of water , with an oily scum , rapidly flll the caissons , which have to ba steadily pumped out as the work progresses. This old water course Is a veritable Banquo's ghost of creeks , ns It will not down and per sists In overflowing cellars In new buildings. The average spectator would scarcely dream that at , this Identical spot the New York boys of seventy years ago skated over this now forbidding underground river from Four trenth sticet down to Canal street , yet there are octogenarians still living who performed that feat. This burled brook , so pleasant to the mem ory of old New Yorkers and so great an ob struction to the builders of today , Is the Mlnetta creek , which , according to experts in local topography , Hews from Its original bed , but In less volume than In Its primitive days. On the old maps the stream Is traced to Its source at a point east of Fifth avenue , between Twentieth and Twenty-first streets , How-Ing thence In nearly a straight line to the southwest corner of Union square , where It curves to a junction with the west branch , which rises east ot Sixth avenue , between Fifteenth and Sixteenth streets , and from this junction It meanders along about the line of Fifth avenue to Clinton Place , then crossing Washington square , through Mlnetta street , Downing street , finally reaching the Hudson river , between Charlton and Houston streets. When the Lincoln building excavation was made at the southwest corner of Union square Mlnetta creek was strongly In evidence , and that building stands on plies , liesldea the course Indicated , this spook of stn > ams has appeared In Sixth avenue , between Tenth nnd Eleventh streets. In the days before * the Mlnetta was filled In and otherwise hidden under "made ground" It washed the base of Richmond Hill , the county seat of Aaron liurr. Its last famous occupant , where It formed a charming pond. The leveling of Richmond Hill filled up the pond , which was quite large , but the Mlnetta still murmurs Its protests. Fnnnil n Uny 4 > ut. In the top of the bowl marked "Leeches' In the drug store , says the Levvlston ( Me. ] Journal , are tiny holes not bigger than a knitting needle. "You wouldn't think , " said the druggist "that the leeches could crawl throush that would you ? You notice their apparent size which it about that of a lead pencil , and you watch them extend themselves and draw themselves up. You admit their elasticity but the thought of their crawling through such a place as that seems Impossible. Yet In a down-town drug store the other day six of them , Impelled b/ some Instinct , some atmospheric or physiological cause , squeezed through these tiny holts and crawled out upon the floor , where they were found In the morning. EIGHTEEN YEARS AMONG MOUNTAIN IRIBES Cnpturril from 111 * Pn rents nt ttio ARC of four , llo Reaches Mniihouil Without Knowing lll KCH | NMIIIC Iilentlllcil by Ills Mother. Romance fades when such a story Is pre sented us was told recently by n visitor In lie city of Denver. The newcomer Is n young coking man of 45. Ills n.itne Is St. Clulr jtrldlron. He acknowledges that ho never < now his true inuiie until he had reached .lie OKI of 2. At the tender age of 4 years icvns taken captive by the Indians , and i.ot until he had attained the full stature of nanhood did he break auny from the iiulo experience among the savages nnd begin life again as a cMllzed being. The story Is one of the most absorbing Interest. It speaks of mrdshlps and trials uf u past generation , and s striking evidence of a controlling force In the preservation of a helpless child. Mr. Strldlron was Been In one of his rooms jy a representative of the Denver News , ( n one corner of the room stood a gun , which , le explained , has been his companion almost as far back as he can remember. The gun was originally a Henry rllle , but has been made over Into \Vlnchister. . Could that Instrument of death speak , what a tale of adventure would It relate ! "I was born In Lexington , Ky. , " paid Mr. Strldlron , In relating his early experiences. "My parents moved to Texas and there I was adopted by u friend of the family , who wns a large stock raiser and an extensive trader. Karly In the 50s he came as fur north on a trading trip as the present site of the town of Kit Carson , In this state. There my benefactor , who expected to make me his heir , tiled , and I was taken toward the south by other members of the party. Mr. Strldlron bays ho was then 4 years of age. The party was quite a small one and camped on the bank of Fountain creek , near Manltou. In the night the older members of the party were apparently telzcd with a panic , on account of fear of an attack from a band of Ute Indians. The men lied , leaving the child asleep under the wagon. "I was awakened by being'lifted suddenly from the ground , " said Strldlron , "and for the first time In'my life I was In contact with an Indian. I found myself In the arms of a squaw and was taken charge of by two Equaws , who treated me kindly and taught me how to live as an Indian. " ADOPTED AS AN UTE. Mr. Strldlron says ho was formally adopted Into the tribe. A large yellow dog named "I'lzo , " which was with him at the time of his advent Into Indian experience , continued faithfully at his tide and for seven years was a most agreeable playmate. Then the dog died. died. The The band with which the captive became associated has since been known as Chlpeta's band. Chlpeta was a squaw of the southern Utes and was the wife of Ouray at the time of his death. She Is now living In Utah. "I have no complaint of the treatment given mo by the Indians , " said the ex-cap tive. "I was put through the usual course of hardening and perhaps was plunged Into cold water a little oftener than was best adapted to my health , but I came out all right. Do you see anything wrong about this muscle ? " As ho spoke he extended an arm whose muscle appeared to the touch almoK as hard aj Iron. "After being washed In a cool mountain stream , I remember that I was given a coat Hi paint and fixed up In true Indian style. They made me buckskin leggings , a little buckbkln shirt and gave me a blanket. My hair was light colored and grew so long that It reached below my waist. I was given bow and arrows and taught to run and jump , ride horseback anil later was taken on hunt ing expeditions and Inducted Into all the nrts of shooting deer , elk , bear , buffalo and smaller game. As I grew up 1 joined the war parties anil engaged In many a foray against the plains Indians , who had been from tlmo Im memorial at war with the Utes _ or the In dians of the mountains. I readily learned the languages of the various tribes and before I had reached the age of IS could carry on conversation with Utes , Apachps , Sioux , Cheyennes , Arapahocs , Navajoes , Comanches and Yumas. "It was years before I learned that I was not a real Indian. I was so young at the time of my capture that I knew nothliiK of my early life , and of course though I was an Indian whose hair , through some freak of nature , happened to be light col ored. One day a white trader asked mete to wash my face. I did so , and of course the paint came off. The trader handed me a glass , and for the first time In my life I saw that I was white. Then memory b gan to assert Itself gradually , and the face of my early benefactor again came Into view I did not ( lull ths Indians , however , until I was about 'M years of age. " FOUND HIS MOTHER AT TWENTY. Strldlron was greeted by a sight of his mother In Denver In 1872. The mother had lost all trace of her son , but through olllcerii of the army she learned that a young man had emerged from fifteen years of captivity among the Indians. She journeyed all the way to Denver to meet the released captive and found him to ba her son. Mrs. Strldlron is now living at the advanced age of 72 years. Hunting and fighting were the principal occupations of Strldlron after he reached the age of 12 or 14 years. "I knew no better , " said lie , "and I grew up with all th ? Utc's batted for the enemies of his tribe. Why , I would rather fight an Arapahoe than to cat a meal ! AVc passed the winters In the southwest corner of Colorado , and tlis cum mer along the eastern slope of the moun tains or In the beautiful mountain parks. I was named 'Gonna' by the Indians. This means 'cat. ' In after years I was known as 'Colorado Kit. ' The name 'Gonna' was given me on account of my motions. I never met an Indian that I could not outshoot or out run. " DATTUE OF DIG GAME. In the mountain parks Strldlron says the game was captured In corrals and shot down In one great slaughter. The destruction was terrific , but It saved a great deal of time and furnished hides and meat In unlimited quantities. Herds of buffalo were surrounded and shot down In the same way on the plains at the base of the mountains. In ranging along the mountains , Strldlron says the tribe met Kit Carson , Jim Baker , Ileckwlth and the noted hunters and trappers of thirty-five or forty years ago. The hunt ers were on friendly terms with the Utes. and the Utes continued on friendly relations with the caravans that crossed the plains toward California. The young captive saw hundreds of trains of emigrants moving Into the mountains , and in many instances ac companied the trains as escort through un friendly country. In his younger years Strld lron was often sent among the emigrants to beg. He acknowledges that the Southern Utes were great beggars. He was highly successful in his supplications , although he was always accompanied by his two female guardians , who would not allow a white wo man to touch the child. HATTUS BETWEEN INDIANS. "I remember when quite young , " said he , "of a great battle between the Utes and Cheyennes. The battle took place on the mesa at the foot of Cheyenne mountain , near Colorado Springs. I was with the women up the side of the mountain and for three days we lingered In uncertainty as to the remit. llunners were In the mountains hastening In reinforcements and on the evenIng - Ing of the third d < iy the Indians of the plains began their retreat. It was a hand to hand fight and was declared by the old men to be one of the moat desperate battles that ever took place in the mountains. I never learned how many were killed , but the de struction wan something frightful , judging by the mourning In the Ute nation after ward. "I uliall never forget a fight In which I toqk part near 'JlmmleV camp. There were nix of us and we were attacked by about twenty Arapahoei. The enemy came down upon us on horseback , with a grand rush , and we were stampeded. One of the Arapahoes threw a rope and caught a squaw who was with 111 , around the body. She was dragged off her horse. I was quite near at the time , and wheeling my home , I jumped to the ground , cut the rope with a clash of my knife nnd swung on horseback with tha sqimv hanging across the horse In front of me Four Arapnhoes arose In n solid body before my horse as I dished forward. I raised my rllle thus ntul got through allvr. " To Illustrate , the Indian fighter hold his Winchester .above his lic.id nnd In front , at right angles with his body , He says ho received n terrific blow In the face from a war club and an artow In the left arm , but carried off the squaw In safely. THHEK CHEYKNNES SINGLE-HANDED. "Onco I was out alone scouting , " said he , In reply to an Inquiry. "I wag Buffering from n wound In the thigh nt the time , but was not afraid to meet any enemy In the open field. About 5 o'clock Iji the afternoon I saw three Cheyennes coming at mo under full headway. They had teen me alone mill were evidently determined to cut mo down. As they ( Mine near , two of the Indians sprang to the ground , circled to the rc.ir and dashed up from behind as If to take mo alive. Iaa on one knee on the ground. The Indian on horseback came at full tilt. I held my flro until Ills horse wag right over me. The bul let went through the body of the horse and passed up through the body of the rider , I killed him too dead to skin. " The escape from the other two enemies Strldlron looks upon as. little short of n miracle. It consisted simply in whirling and beating their brains out with tlu < heavy barrel - rel of the gun. The victor carries several ugly wounds ns souvenirs of the fight , but ho con'ldt-rs himself good for forty years more of life , barring accident and contagious dis ease. ' A WOMAN'S THRILLING SHOT. JciMie Morn Inciting 'Ilinn Any Found In the Dm inn , One of the pluckiest things which n man who has traveled nil over the world toys that he ever saw was the act of n woman whom he never spoke to or even saw near enough to know whether she was old or young It was out In a California canyon on n hot sum mer's afternoon , relates Youth's Companion , and lie was driving slowly up a steep moun tain road. On one bide was a wall of rock and on the other the precipice fell off Into n valley perhaps half a mile wide. Across this valley was another read just like the onu he was traveling steep , winding and pre cipitous , and ko narrow that no teams could pass except In carefully prepared spots. On this other road , going slowly up , just as he was , ho saw another wagon , the horses driven by a woman , who was alone. As the two wagons crawled slowly up suddenly the man heard a Mmrp , quick sound that somehow startled him. He turned nnd saw , to his horror ror , tearing down the strep accent at full gal lop , n l lr of powerful horses attached to a heavy wagon , such as the Mexicans use to draw wood In. Down they came , straight In the path up which the wonun was driving. A. moment more and sulden destruction would be upon her. The gentleman opened his lips to cry out. Half a mile of vnlhy semrated him from the woman. He could only sit , frozen with horror , awaiting the end. The woman hml stopped her team and s.U as If petrified. It was Impossible to turn around or even to turn out. Suddenly , to his unutterable amazement , the watcher saw the woman deliberately rise In her seat , raise her arm and fire. Thorn was a Hash , a puff of smoke , n report , and simultaneously the outer of the two frenzied horses stumbled , fell and pitched headlong , dragging his companion and the wagon o\er Into the gorge below. All this had passed In a flabh. The watcher stupefied and gasping , tat Mzlng at the v.il- ley. Into the depths of which the mad vision had dlrappeaied. Then he looked at the mountain opposite. The narrow road was perfectly free , the air was as still as before , the silence unbroken , and the team with the solitary woman was quietly winding up the road again. It was n cool nnd rarely brave act. An Instant's Indecision , the trembling of n hand , would have been fatal ; but both brain and hand were under absolute control. In nlno cases out o ten It Is not the danger which kills us , but we who cowardly commanders of ourtelvcs lay down our arms nnd suc cumb without a struggle. THE UNBIDDEN GUEST. A Hi-nr MIllRlon with tilelueKts 111 n Yel. lowaloniHotel. . At the hotel which vVns located nt the Vp- per Geyser Basin , but burned last winter , there was last summer , s-ays the Chicago Inter Ocean , a big black bear who slept under the house , and became ko tame that the guests fed him , and one evening the porters ters enticed him Into the hotel olllco with sugar. He cume In , walked through the big lobby , bnlffed at the telegraph Instrument as though he understood that It was clicking messages back to the great cities of America , and then walked to the front door , where ho stood for some tlmo gazing out at Old Faith ful and hesitating about his return to the pine woods beyond. This playful prank of the porters was , however , enjoyed more after bruin had gone than while he was In tha hotel. The guest1 ! , who had no fear of him out at the garbage box or around the grounds of the liolc-1 , were somewhat nervous when ho took prxsofcslon of the lobby , where they were sitting about the big open wood fire , talking about what they would Jo If a bear should walk Into the hotel. They sat like statues , ani Manager Howe , who nuii led bruin from his hand outtlde , felt that this was a closer acquaintance than he desired to cultivate. He thought the bear might next move 01 the dining room and play the port of the bull In the china bhop. Mr. Haynes , the olllciul photographer of the park , sat near enough to the door to lay his hand on bruin , but ho did not attempt to get his picture , though ho had been waiting years for a bear to come up and sit for his photograph. Tlio kodak cnthuslabts were too nervous to even press the button an3 get u snap bhot. They all felt more comfortable when the- bear walked out of the front door , across tlio vci iida and out across the lawn to the pine woods. Manager Howe told the porters that whllo ho wanted to keep on friendly , and oven Intimate , terms vlth the bear , ho did not want him to Infringe the rules against dogs being allowed In the parlor or dining room , nnd a bear , gentle and Irlendly ns ho might be , could not be allowed privileges not given to the < \ois. \ ; The boar still haunts the Upper Basin , but the hotel which sheltered him has been burned , nnd Mr. Howe has only a lunch sta tion there now , but he finds him at the gar bage box Just as before.
