"Turn about is fair play" He swung the 38-cjllber Winchester to his shoulder with the easy grace of a born rifleman. A master of the weapon , he poised it lightly , his atti tude an artistic study. He came close and spoke In Hllgerd's car. "Paul , things have1 taken an unexpected and disappointing turn "Thoro Is but ono way I c.m see now to discover any trace of poor Newell , and that is through him " noJdlng his head toward th- still manacled captive. They re turned to the fire and Wharton said some thing In a low tone to the professor , who arose sullenly and followeJ him oft to one side They sat on a log Just in side the circle of light which throw weird , waving shadows off Into the dismal re cesses of the swamp Wharton bent farvvard speaking earnestly , occasionally raising his hands with expressive gestures The pro fessor sat erect with the mien of an Indian chief , staring back with set vlsago at the glowing embers where Hllgerd sat with the collar of his coat thrown up. The damp air was penetrating. It was long before the council ended and Hllgerd awoke from his doze with a start as Wharton's hand fell on his shoulder. He got up without a word and followed him down to the boat , leaving the sleepy sheriff to stand guard Wharton a face was "crlous , and Hllgerd expected the worst The gray light of nn early morning throw a ghostly mantle over the odd shapes of the stunted trees , and the Influence of the scene was felt by both "Tho professor has trld me all , " said Wharton , slowly "Newell Is still alive , but whether ho will be tomorrow night depends upon our action. Ltiys la Wnlt for Ity Voritnntu mill I'timpi u I Ivlnc Out of 'I hi-in I was spinning along the boulevard near Jamaica , Long Island , ono morning last week , relates a writer In the New York Herald , proud of my now wheel and con gratulating in ) self on the fact that It was .en seconds faster In the mile than the ' 91 machine on which I had learned to ride. Like nil comparatively new vhcolmen , I felt that the rotd records , from a mile to a century , were at my Tnercy. Lounging ahead of mo was a long-legged countryman on a high frame , rusty wheel of the vintage of ' 93. I hnd plenty of tlmo to look him over ns I approached , for ho was going at n fair pace , although his wheel wabbled every few seconds , and ho seemed to have hard work to stick to his mount at times. His dingy , old soft brown hat , his soiled and dusty sweater and his greasy- legged amUfrayed trousers , tied at the bottom with packing twine , made him an amusing sight. His wheel seemed to have endured a very long siege ot hard luck. Certainly It had not been cleaned since last season , and probably It hadn't been oiled since the 1st of April. As ho heard the whirr of an approaching wheel the Reuben bent over his handle bar with a great show of anxiety and began to spurt. Smiling at his conceit I pedaled a trlllc harder and slowly drew up to him. Ilia gait grew more wabbly than ever , his head seemed about to strike the front tire and he panted Ilko n "roarer" In a long race. In splto of his efforts I pissed him and ran away almost as I pleased 'Seo here , " exclaimed Reuben , as ho came puffing after mo when I slowed a little , "I ain't much In Hprlntln' . becauao I've only learned to rldo this spring , out I'm right In It on endurance. Yes , sir , I'll tackle any man I meet on a mllu race ; that Is. 'ceptln * professional. Say , you ain't no professional , ba jer ? " This was really lee funny. I reassured Reuben that I was a mere amateur not even a class U man , nnd that ho had nothing to fear"Well. "Well. " ho sold. "I'll race yo from here to the Pearsalls road. That's a full mile. An1 what's moro , I'll bet ycr I beat yer fcr enny amount o' money " Something about the countryman's keen , bright eyes and his hard and well tanned face had caught my attention. Ho looked like a man In prime fettle I refused to bet any money. lie begged hard for a bet , but I was firm with him. "Mako It for the beers , then , " ho urged. I accepted In a moment wo were under full speol , Reuben's bony knees fljlng up and down Ilko the knees of a race horse. He wabbled no longer I had to set a hot pace to shako him off Ho wouldn't stay ehaken. Again and again ho came up with a rush. I began to hopn that each ono would bo his lust , but tha fellow seemed to grow htrongor at each spurt. When we were within 200 yards ot the finish Reuben , who had hung on to mo for the Ust quarter with something Ilko ease , aiulJenly humped forward , dug hard on his pedals , and abandoned mo as If I were anchored Ha dismounted and stood there , grinning when I came up. 'Told jcr I was great on endurance , " ho chuckled. "I ain't afraid o' none of 'em " Whllo wo were pouring down our wager I looked the countryman over with care. Ilia legs were thick an well as long Ho had not an ounce of flesh to spare His back was broad and powerful everything about him showed that ho was built for speed , and that his condition could not very well bo Improved - proved Ho kindly allowed mo to cxamlno his wheel. It looked neglected at first , but I soon found that the neglect vvat all on the surface. True , there were liberal splotches of mud all over tlio frame , and the np'jXes were oaten- tatlouslyTusty ; but the dust caps were all In first class order , nnd all the bearings wera perfect and well lubrlcntpil. The sprocket was clean , and co was the chain , which was liberally coated with graphite. Uv pry thing that tended to make weight had been stripped away the brake , bell , lantern , etc Tha countryman told mo how sorry ho was that I hadn't bet htm a tow dollars , and rode away , practicing InJustrlously the deceptive vvibbbla that had first lured me Into raring with him. A few miles further eastward I described my antagonist to a frlemllv hotel keeper and asked Win It ho knew the man. ' Oh , yes , " ho answered. "You p'ckoJ him up near Jamaica , didn't you' Yes' That's right. Ho catcher 'cm whether they roino from Urooklyn or Fluihlng. Ho can do a mile pretty close to 2 20 when he's stripped down to It anil on a first class racing machine. He goes a llttlo Ir.sldo of 2 30 on that oM wheel and wearing hctvy clothes No one around hero can beat him.
