dence at 2 o'clock , Interment being In For
est Lawn cemetery. The funeral will be
In charge of the Ancient Order of
United Workmen , Watts having been a
member of Union Pacific lodge No. 17 of
that order.

powerfully built man lie stopped right In

His glances swept the floor , then rested on
the open afo With a few swift strides he
was before It. He was hcaxlly bearded and
around his waist hung a leather belt supportIng -
Ing holsters , from the tops of which loomed
up threateningly the handles of a pair of
deadly Colte. Ills motions were cat-like ,
swift and graceful With deft lingers ho
transferred the money packages from the safe
to a huge pocket In the side of his coat.
Again the nauseous odor came to llllgerd
as a largo panel slid down In the south side

crouched like a panther ready to spring
The robber had emptied the safe and wiu
casting a last furtive , triumphant glance

step brought him opposite the open panel

was quickly handcuffed , then half carried ,

and the panel and door were again closed.
Wharton stepped and took a kneeling posi

ing Wharton motioned with his arm , keep-
.ng his face to the front. A shadow passed
the curtain and Hllgerd scanned the new
comer closely. Ho was not so tall as his
companion and moved vvlth a gliding , shuf
fling step. His shoulders were slightly bent ,
but their breadth Indicated enormous
strength. As he stepped Into the full glare
of the lamps something glistened In his
right hand , and Hllgerd could scarcely re
press a cry of warning. Wharton worked
Industriously at something In the safe. The
man took another step or two then , as If
satisfied there was no occasion for Its Im
mediate use , transferred the weapon
pen to the other hand. As If by
magic the scene changed , and they saw
Wharton gaIng Into the eyes of the other
as ho lay helpless on his back. It was n
terrific spring , and the robber was down and
his revolver wrenched from his grasp before
he could utter a word or make a move. The
second lay In sullen silence , the light of hat
red In his deep-set , beady-looking oyes.
Wade slipped back Into the smoker and re
turned with three determined looking men.
"Thero they arc , Saunders , " ho said
briefly , "two of the worst desperadoes In this
part of the country. You have Mr. Wharton
hero to thank for the Job , which. I must
confess , was a neat one "
The sheriff gave some directions to his
deputies , occasionally gazing with admiration
at Wharton. The latter was packing his own
co-it nnd vest Into his satchel , still wearing
the coat and hat of the robber.
"We will take Mr. Sanders with us , Jim , "
ho said , shortly. "I hope to be able to
finish the work by morning Good night"
He picked up a lantern , and Hllgerd fol
lowed him out onto the platform.
"We will now change cars , Phil , " said
Wharton. "I know It IB not customary to
perform this feat while flying through space ,
yet the sensation must be novel " They were
whirling along at a clipping pace , the svvlng-
Ing motion ot the car making It difficult to
stand erect. The rails ot the other track
slipped past like silver threads. A board
led out from the lower stup , and down this
Wharton crawled fearle ly. Ho stopped ,
turned , and his lantern reealed the outlines
of an ordinary looking handcar , moving
along with the train.
"I forgot my satchel. Please get It , " ho
shouted. Hllgerd went back Into the car ,
picked It up and threw the strap over his
shoulder. U seemed to him like courting
death to step from the train onto that flimsy-
looking bridge , but he ihut his Jaws firmly ,
dropped on all fours and moved slowly out.
The slight wooden connection rattled and
swung viciously He could not see , and
nothing could ho hear above the clanging
roar of the noisy cars The wind cut past
him wildly ; smoke rushed Into his nose ,
and a burning spark stung him sharply on
the cheeU Inch by Inch h3 made his way ,
then a strong arm swung him safely over
He looked up and saw the sheriff's burly
form pawing along so like a great bear that.
In spite of the strangeness of It all , he could
not repress a emlle. Wharton swung the
bridge back Into Its place , and quickly they
dropped behind. The express car shot away ,
then th" lights from the coaches danced
by the sleepy occupants all unconscious of
the unseen drama of the night. With a
final roar the heavy sleepers whizzed out of
sight , and the adventurous trio sat speech
less In a silence as deep as the tomb
Hllgerd rubbed his eyes. "Phil , " said he ,
"this tight rope business Is dreadfully tryIng -
Ing to a man out of training. Is there anymore
moro of that ahead of us ? "
"It was difficult , and you behaved nobly ,
Phil , " replied Wharton. laughing , "butvo
have some harder work before us. Lot me

this metal reservoir here , and a deadly gas ,
a secret production of the professor's , Instan
taneously pervaded the car. Then they moved

know the rot. They looked through the win
dow to see that their devilish plans worked

only way to outwit them and to get them
Into the car , and that wai what wo wished
