I I COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL After a Hard Sttneglo for Higher Prices Whent Turned Weak , , I NO GREAT VOLUME IN CORN TRADING Uonililerlnt ; tli Modurato Amount of ltul- Hem , tile I'luctuatlriun Were 1'ro- qncntt but Not Very Vloluiit rruvlnloiiB Very Mi-one- CHICAGO. July 8. After u luircl for higher prices tfheitl turnuil weak today on favorable crop reports nnil lack of ex port demand , cloning Ho lower for Septem ber. Corn closed % c lower , oats 'jc lower and provisions tit general declines. HtcaillncHH on the foreign exchanges nnil rnln Intermixed with high temperature In the northwest gave the wheat market a strong Bend off , and kept It Btrons for an hour. Light receipts likewise contributed their quota to the aid of the early advance and later Borne telegram ! ) were received from Minneapolis which seemed to justify the apprehensions which the weather re port had raised regarding the spring wheat. The firmness of the market continued until the receipt of the Missouri state crop report , which was of a surprising character and caused the loss In a few minutes of all that the market hud gained up to the time of Its receipt. The June report of the Mis- Kauri slulo authorities plnci-d the condition of wheat at CD , and now it puts it at 73 , or II points higher than In June , which Is so manifestly wrong that the trade here Boon got over the si-arc and began to buy back some of the wheat thrown over when the report referred to was llrst sprung. The government agricultural bureau made the condition of winter whe.it on June 1 7i ) , and the I'ralrlo Fanner and Oranyc Judd Farmer statisticians made substantially the name returns concerning It , und both of the latter have since brought th condition up from Z to1 ] > olnts since June 1. The state authorities were evidently In error In giv ing the June condition as low as K > per cent , and In bringing It up to 73r | cent now they are quickly coming Into line with others and correcting their previous estimate , which was entirely too low. The receipts of wheat hero were given us 21 cars , but 12 of those were transfers from Irregular to regular oily elevators. Of the 1- cars of fiesh rece.pts 6 weie new wheat , 1 of which M.ided No. 2 and the other 5 No. 3. Minneapolis and Duliilh reported 137 car loads received , against 31G a year ago. St. Louis n-rclptH were comparatively liberal at i : ) , ( XI btl. . but Toledo received only 1,672 bu. , and Detroit Ifi" bu. The ex port clearances of wheat anil Hour from the Atlantic seaboard amount to the equiv alent of 311/ino bu. , 8G.CKK ) bu. of which was In the shape of wheat. The English cables came llrm at the close , but Uerlln was weak and sent lower quotations and the market hero began to lve Indications of the need for outside buying orders. September , which had kept within a range of from 7Hic to Wtv the greater part of the time , was down to 70TC about half nn hour from the close , and rested at TO'iic. Trading In corn was largely on local ac count and of no great volume. Consider ing the moderate amount of business the fluctuations were frequent but not very violent , llotwecn 4i' ( < , c and w&c for Septem ber , the price moved up and down several times. The generally stronger tone which prevailed early was due to the moderate exports and good cash demand. Spot corn to go to store was wanted at 4G'/ic. Receipts today were ICO cars , and tomorrow the esti mate Is for 2IU ears , which will Include the accumulation of the holiday. The exports from the Atlantic seaboard amounted to 150,000 bu. The Missouri state report re marked that the promise for corn Is phe nomenal , and private reports fiom Kansas are to a similar effect. September opened at from 46140 to 1G'C ( , sold as high as 4G-c Id IGc anil down to from I5'ic tol.V&c near the close , the latest trading being at the lowest quotation. In oats business was fairly heavy and the market quite active throughout. With n generally good demand from shorts the tone was very llrm and higher prices were scored Qnrly In the session. Later , however , when Wheat and corn broke , oats also took a drop and ended at from He to'tc lower on near futures and steady on the deferred deliveries. September ranged from Slv-jic to 2le , closing at the low point. r ' The provision market was strpv . . . opening and weak at the cjnf-y * ' J1B ' ! nt the end fchowed n r < " 1iicjL.j ) ' " ' "v- Pork In Wednesday njt < r.-jr " 'I"1 , llrlro | incl' | " nnd 2T c u ijr : inoon of luc in September ii -vJ.j.f tri July.
