CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE
Business in n Jobbing Way Shows Some Im
provement in Staple Linos.
COLLECTIONS CONTINUE RATHER SLOW

Cituict an I'ii | n lo of Crcillts Viilues

Have an UpiTard Tendency ,
In the movement ot mcrclmndlso In the
wholesale district there Is licro nnd there
evidence of a little more Interest among
' buycrp , which jobbers nre disposed to ac
cept an the nr t ripples of the rising tide of
demand. The fnct hns been realized all
nloniT that the Inillftercnco of country buy
ers was duo to the uncertainty ns to what
fho future had In store , nnd that with few
exceptions stocks were reduced to the lowest
possible point. Now that the small grain
crop Is practically assured nnd while
jveathor conditions are most favorable for
the growth of corn , the time has arrived
when Borne expansion In the volume of
business Is to bo anticipated.
It Is frequently remarked that there can
bo little Improvement In business until there
la more money In the country and that the
volume of money In circulation In the statu
cannot show any material Increase until the
corn crop Is marketed. Small grain and live
stock will bring In some ready cash , but
not enough to restore business. This view
of the situation would preclude the pos
sibility of any substantial Improvement In
trade until some time next winter or spring ,
after the farmers had had tlmo to gather
and Bell their corn crop.
The fact of the matter Is that the greater
portion of all business transactions Is con
ducted on a ctedlt busts. It Is not neces
sary to liavo the cash In hand In order to
secure merchandise , but only a good assur
ance that the money will be forthcoming In
the course of time. Merchants contract or
expand their ct edits according to their
customers' ability to pay. At the present
tlmo the ability to pay hinges almost en
tirely upon the growing crop of corn.
If U were possible to know beyond nil
question of doubt that there would bo a corn
crop of 209,000,000 bushelrt this year business
would put on such activity ns hns not been
witnessed In many a long day. Kvery one
would want goods antl every olio would be
ready nnd anxious to sell on time. Such tt
' 'hlng , however. Is an Impossibility , but as
each week brings the crop so much nearer
maturity nr.a. reduces the uncertainty as to
the outcome , business men commence to
feel reassured anil the line of credits Is
gradually expanded. This Is the explanation
of the seeming anomaly of a gain In the
volume of goods moving , nt a time when
money Is scarce nnd the amount In circula
tion Is not being Increased to any material
extent. Thus the Jobbers arc sending out
more goods than they were thirty days
ngo , but are not receiving any more money
In return.
Country merchants are reporting a slight
Increase In business. It Is the same with
them as with the Jobbers. They are selling
more goods , but nre taking In very little
irore cash. Collections continue very slow
and there Is every reason for expecting that
they will remain so for some llttlo tlmo to
come. While good prospects are a great
help In the selling of merchandise they are
not of much avail when It comes to the
matter of collections.
There Is one feature of the situation that
Is characteristic of the times , and that Is
the absence of demand for what nro gen
erally termed luxuries. The demand Is for
staple goods , the necessities of everyday
life.
life.Some
Some of the Increased demand from the
country , especially in the eioccry line , Is
duo to the fact that the farmers are hard
at work and that the working man Is a
greater consumer thnn the Idle man. As a
wholesale grocer expresses tt. It Is the man
with the tin bucket \vho consumes the
goods.
The market on most llnc-j of staple goods
In demand at this season of the year Is firm ,
to Hay the least. In groceries there has
bteu a steady hardening of ijirlccs on a good
many lines , duo to the Increased demand and
Bcnentl Improvement In ull Eectlons ot the
country.
Thp hardware market Is very strong , In
fact It Is hard to recall a time when there
was n more healthy market. There have
been few occasions Avhen goods were ns
scarce at manufacturing points and the
drtnund ns good. The demand for bicycles
keeps up and Jobbers and manufacturers
alike are stuffed with orders. It Is prac
tically Impossible to supply Iho dr-mand.
In the line of dry goods the maiket dur
ing Iho past week hns revealed unabated
Htrcngth In all staple cotton goods depart
ments. , It Is claimed that even'tho present
advanced prices fall to represent a pnln In
values commensurate with the rls.e In the
price of raw material.
CITY nCTAILBUSINESS. .
As regards the retail tr.ule of Omaha , the
past week cannot be f-ald to have materi
ally altered thn situation. In n general
wav business of a purely local character Is
dull , though licit ? und thete nn exception
may be noted. The larger department stores
uro dolm ? a fair business and yet they are
not coming up to expectations ana their
managers generally report trade as dull.
The small dealers nre not doing any bet-
tor. It ns well , Occasionally a merchant
Is found who professes to have nn active
trade , but they nro rare. The demand Is
largely for such goods as ure commonly
classed ns necessities , whllo the call for
fancy goods Is very light.
There Is only one explanation for the pros-
j ent condition of the retail trade of Omaha ,
and that is the lack of working people. Kv-
cry business man Is aware ot the fact that
the men and women who wotk In the fac
tories and shops arc the ones who create
business. A city that has a good many
manufacturing establishments always en
joys a good retail trmle. Omaha has never
had any too many factories and the number
ot people employed has always been small
for n city of Us size. At the present time
the number of people employed In the fac
tories H less than usual , owing to the dull
< times , nnd the retail trade 'suffers In conse-
* * nuonco. This fact , however , does not appear -
. pear lo deter the retailers from spndlng
thousands of dollars east nvery month for
goods , while Omaha factories run on half
tlmo and the operators uro Idle.

There Is nothing sn Interesting ; to the
nvcrngo business man these days as In
formation regarding1 the growing crops of
the state. The reports published In The
Bee as to the nmuunt of rainfall nnd the
condition of the cropi nre read with tlio
closest attention. While the condition of
the crops lias absorbed so much attention ,
there has been very llttlo said regarding
the rtcrcaKo or probable yield for the whole
tUuto. lluslncs.i mm have appeared fnllMled
to know that the amount of moisture w.is
hulllcicnt for the pctfeit development of
the growing ; plant ami hnvo not attempted
\o \ speculate on the yield.
Oruln iiic-n , however , have already figured
on the number of bushels of grain that the
titutc will produce , nnd while they do not
nil agree , them is not ns much difference
between their figures as might bu expected ,
It la generally admitted that the acreage
of corn IH latKnr than last season , many
plurlnc the Increase at 10 per cent. They
also figure on un Increase In the acreage of
oatn , but u decrease In the wheat acreage ,
owing to the fnct that a good deal of thn
wheat was plowed up and planted to corn.
TalclnR the present condition of the corn
crop and the estimated acreage us a basis
on which lo llguro , a good many of the
most sanguine among the grain nnd ele
vator men ate placing the corn crop of Ne-
braeku nt nn even iOO.ooo.tWu bushels. The
moro cautious admit that should the pres
ent favorable weather continue such n yield
far tills state would not bo In the nature of
a surprise.
The banner year for corn , eo far ns .Iho
wliolo country was concerned , was 1&S9.
\vhen the yield for the I'nlted States
amounted to 2,112.832,000 bushels. The larg
est yield In Nebraska wns In the year 1S31.
when 1CTC52,000 bushels were produced. In
181)3 ) there was ft fulling off of about 10.000-
ooo bushels from the extreme high point ,
The following figures will show the yield In
Nebraska of corn and of wheat , also , for
the pant ton years.

report of exhausted stocks In that country. The

from Irregular to rejrular city houses. Minneap
olis and luiluth rccolvfd 237 cars , computed with
207 cars tin the corresponding day of last year.
The openlnB prices were about the sumo as the
previous day a closing quotations , and for a
minute or two there Hero enough buying orders
to KVO ! an nppearnncc of strength to the market.
That gave way befoio the persistent selling of
July by those who did not wish to take what
might be tendered to them en Monday , If they
should remain holders of their contracts till
then. The price of September nt the start wns
from 71o to 7lc. with 71io the most RCII-

minutes the decline which an hour of prsst- !

and nn advance established. About half an hour
from the clm < September Imd risen to 72Vic. The
news concernlni ; the winter wheat threshings re
produced what Imd previously ! > een remaiked
about the unsatisfactory yield and the miserable
quality. The fellnK of danger to those on the
short side with the new wheat , which Is coming
to lii.ilket not much better than the tailings of
previous > ears , was the uppermost thought In
lie minds of the crowd as the session was neai-
.rttf Its end and caused the price to ad\ance to

Corn was dull and of Itself heavy , but buying

47t4c to 48',4t ' , , the lowest price being made near
the opening nnd the highest nt the close. The
trading wns principally In the way of changing
July wheat Into September. The receipts of to
day were 171 cars , and 190 arc estimated for
Monday. The Argentine shipments for the week
amounted to l.OOO.OW bu.
A K ml general business was transacted In oats.
September and' May ruled consldeinbly llrmer ,
but the nenrby deliveries were b.uely steady nt
the. close nml ruled easier during the gi cuter pnrt

months was entirely In sympathy with wheat

Yesterday It closed at from 23c to SG c and
today nt 25Uc.
Provisions recovered the bullish tone
which appeared to have deserted them yes

CATTLK The cattle market of the past
week has been about ns devoid of Interest
IIH could vvell be Imagined. While the re
ceipts have been larger than for the pre
vious week , that fnct luus not added ma
terially to the Intel ust In the trade. The
fnot of the mat tor is that about hall of the
cattle on most days of tlio week were con
signed direct to the packers and wore not
ollercd on the market. Thu packets have
MJPU forced to buy In southern markets nntl
hip the cattle hero In order to keep their
loitsos going. With the actual offerings on
ho mnrkct so light It was Imrdly possible
that the inatket should ptesont iminy newer
or Interesting featuios. What cattle have
iceii offeied have sold tolerably \veli. Thu
tendency of the maikct has been toward
uglier prices , nml considerable Improvement
ias taken place In Iho prices paid for handy
fat sluers. Heavy fat cattle have not bhovvn
ns much ualn. Cows ami heifers have com-
111111(10(1 ( stioiiK prices all the week , while
recduis have told higher.
The market today did not .show nny mn-
: erlal change from ycsteiday. There wore
only about 40J head on sale , the balance of
.ho receipts having been consigned direct to
.he packers. There were a few steels hen-
good enough to bring $ I.G3. but thi bulk of
the sales were nt from $1.23 to $1.51.
Cows and heifers sold nt about the same
o.il prices. Tlio trade was without foatutc
and the offerings consisted of omy n few
odds anil ends. Calvu.s , It was claimed by
Home , did not move off quite so freely , and
hat the feeling AMIS not quite so strong.
Ihero was nothing of any consequence
loing : In stockcrs tinil feeders. There were
10 cattle hero and very few buyeis. Itupre-
