purpse and at their last meeting Mayor

While Omaha has been working on spee'al
trains , special rates , organizing parties to
rldo overland , giving "Kearney Meet Smok
ers. " etc. , the balance of the ttato has not
been asleep. The Oriental and the Ladles'
Tourist Cycling clubs of Grand Island , two
of the leading clubs In the state , have been
working together l.n harmony to the end that
their city will probably make the larg
est showing ot any point In the Mate.
They deserve and will have the admiration
of the state for their good taste In adopting
the rational blcomcr costume , and this , with
the fact that their members are In every
Instance women of marked beauty and high
social position , compels Kearney to yield the
palm and acknowledge that In one thing
connected with cycling our neighbor city has
thrown us down and Is walking all over us
and yet we have some of the best women
riders In this Plate.or any other state , and one
In particular that can ride a half in 1:12 : , and
the mile under 2:35. : It Is to bo regretted In this
case that public sentiment IE unfavorable to
women racing , as every Kcarnoylte would like
to see our "star rider" open the eyes of the
world , but there Is no probability that the
young woman referred to would consent , so
we will not be Justified In ever expecting It
and will Ira content with the opinion that
we have the fastest woman cyclist In this
part of the country.
It Is customary for race promoters to cir
culate the Impression that their track Is
"the only" fast track In the state , when the
fact Is the track referred to Is In such con
dltlon that It would "Jar a cow" to walk
around on It , but our association , believing
that an honest tale speeds best being plainly
told , wU'hes to positively state that our track
committee has been faithful to Its trust , and
by hard work It has gained a victory
over stubborn clay , shifting eands and rip
pling waters , and by a successful combina
tion of the three have produced a track that
the national circuit chasers would pronouncr
a "hot thing. " The clay and sand were
easily obtalnsd , but the water was a
"knocker , " and while we have had copious
sho\yers , making the fields verdant with
growing cereals , and giving every promise
of a glorious crop , the amount of rainfall
was not sufficient for puddling the track pur
face , and something had to be done. The
track , fortunately , Is situated on the line ot
the Trank Improvement company's canal at
a point one-half mlle south , which made It
practicable to pipe the water Into a reservoir
In the center of the track.
A special wagon , fitted with an electric
fifteen-horse power motor and pump , was
constructed under the personal eupervlslon
and at the expense of Augustus Frank , which
forces the watsr through a line of hosa 500
feet In length , fitted with the new E. I )
Finch patent spray nozzle recently adoptci !
by the Kearney fire department , wettlnp

nee : I have been nn Interested reader ot i
the articles appearing In your paper from tlmo |
to time , urging changes In train and mall t
service that would better serve the business
Interests of our city nnd Its morning papers.
During the discussion of this question It
Jia been Intimated that the remedy was In
jhe hands of the I'ostofllco department ana
that * the local' ' officials of that department
were not taking the Interest In the matter
that they should. On this point It does not
appear to be generally understood that the
I'ostofilce department has no control what
ever over train schedules , except those of
fast mall trains , run for the exclusive use of
the mall service. We simply have authority
to make use of such trains as railroad com
panies may eeo fit to run on schedules pre
pared wholly by railroad officials. That wo
are giving the best service possible under
these conditions I think all will admit. This _
has been and Is now our constant study.
I agree with you that It would Improve the
service If railroad companies could be In
duced to have certain trains leave Omaha
considerably earlier In the day and our de
partment has suggested this to the ofilclala
of lines running In all directions from our
city , and we hope that the suggestion will bo
acted upon at an early day.
Now a word for the railroads. I have It
from the best authority that Iho earnings of
one of the lines In our state during the year
last past did not pay operating expenses by
over $400,000 , to bay nothing of Interest on
bonds , etc. This was the case to a greater
or less degree with all lines , nnd under
these conditions It was absolutely necessary
from a business standpoint to reduce ex
penses as much as possible. This meant re
duction In train service , particularly on
branch lines , and consequent reduction In
mall facilities. H was a matter of great
regret to tho. companies and to the officials
of our serlvce that tach action was neces
sary , but all branches of business have been
under the same necessity and all are longing
for the tlnio to come when Increased business
will Justify Increased expenditures.
I am sure that I can safely say that if our
prorpects for an abundant crop arc realized ;
we will have a train service and therefore a ;
mall service of which we can Justly boast.
I have always and always will use what
ever Influence I may have for the Improve
ment of tl.e mall tcrvlce In our state and 1C
at any time I can be of service to the busi
ness Interests of our city I will be glad to
be called upon , but our work now must ba
done by our business men with the railroad
companies , for they only have the means to
furnish better facilities.

receives Minneapolis morning papers on date
of publication several hours In advance cf
Omaha or Lincoln papers. A glance at train
schedules shows thU to bo an Impossibility.
