MINNEAPOLIS , Juno 28. Last night's Hr
In the wholesale crockery establishment ol
McDonald ilros. on First avenue south near
Third street U the most disastrous In tti
loss o ( flreincn's lives In the history of the
.Minneapolis flrc department. Five bravo
fellows lie mangle. ! and lifeless and six of
their comrades are writhing In agony at
various hospitals. Of these elx one at leut
seems doomed to die , while In another case
the Issue Is In doubt. The great five-story
brick building , with Its enormous stock ot
crockery , Is In utter ruin , and the blackened
walls , broken windows and drenched floors
of the adjoining buildings bear mute evi
dence to the victory won by the department
against great odds In confining the flamefl to
the place of their origin. The list of tn
killed Is as follows :
KKANK KUIIL13IN , lieutenant.
WAliTEH HICHAUDSON.
JOSEPH W. HOY.
' A
JOHN IIOHNEH.
CHRISTIAN SANDE.
The seriously Injured are :
John Gray , broken knee cap and other
slight Injuries.
Ernest C. Caldwell , captain , back badly
strained and Internal Injuries ; may die.
Henry CJau , back and kidneys badly In
jure J ; will die.
Krank Egan , bruised.
W. II. McDonald , lieutenant , badly crushed.
Ed Thleland , captain , badly bruised about
head and body.
Resides the firemen who were Injured were
the following private citizens :
Theodore Veil of Anoka , Minn. , cut by
'ailing glass.
William Ilreltcnstcln , Minneapolis , cut by
'ailing glass.
Paul Johnson , Minneapolis , cut by falling
glas. * .
The heavy brick wall which wrought the
njury fell almost without warning. Tha
lames had been Uevt well within the bulld-
ng by Iron shutters until the Interior was a
blazing furnace. The newly dug cellar of
a proposed building permitted access on one
side , and this point ot vantage was occupied
> y a score ot firemen , who were directing a
half dozen streams Into the building. Sud
denly the roof fell with a roar. The crash
carried down the girders , the Bide wall wav
ered for an Instant and then toppled over
on the heads of the firemen beneath. The
multitude that stood watching were breath-
ess and silent. The vaet cloud of dust and
smoke that arose from the debris choked out
ho flames momentarily nnd there was no
found save the breathing of the engines.
Then the police and willing helpers rushed
'orwarcl and pulled the mangled forms of
: ho dead and living from under the hot
arlcka. The dead were so mangled that It
was some time before all could be Identified.
The loss Is $40,000 on the building and
JGO.OOO on the stock and Is total. The In
surance Is ample to cover this.
