INCREASE IN SHOP FORCES Union Pacific Eolieves It Will Bo Hcqnired in a Ftw Days. i FOLLOWS RETENTION OF THE SHORT LINE lliindllut ; of Freight from the Northwcut l Nrcrmlliitc I'.xtciKlto Kepuira to ItollliiK MncU UorK Will llo Cliklly Dona In Oiniilm. Should the American Loan and Trust com pany , as trustee of the consolidated mortgage , refuse on July 1 to pay the Interest In default on the Oregon Short Line & Utah Northern and the contention allowed to rest until actual foreclosure of the lines Is accomplished , It Is believed that the shop forces at this point vslll be largely Increased , as there Is a great demand for cars now needing repairs , which the present force cannot handle. The Union Pacific people have been moving very slowly In the matter. They have massed the cars of the Short Line at division points along the system , and even the engines , credited to that branch ot the Union Pacific , have been doing the work In the northweat In the event that It a change In the receivership should take place , the equipment would 1)3 on the ground as largely as possible , ready to be turned over to the new receiver. As the time for a decision nears , and the Boston and New York Interests show no disposition to take the property , the Union Pacific re ceivers are preparing to place the equipment In the best possible condition , ready for the movement of freight from the northwest. The shop forces at Omaha have been re duced to the minimum and the emplovcs have all they can possibly take care of under present circumstances , eo that any additional work to bo done Immedla'ely would require additional force , which , It Is understood , Is now being discussed. This augmenting of forces \s \ along the lines of other roads In the transml3ourl : coun try , the Uurllngton management having under consideration the advisability ot put ting on a night force of workmen at the Havelock shops. At present the Ilurllngton Is pressed for work , the building of the new class 1C engines requiring skilled labor , which has heretofore been employed In the repair of engines. A very sharp lookout is being kept on all vscstcrn excursions these days to see that the agreed rates to the con vention of the National educational society at Denver are not cut. They have alvvavs been cut , and there Is no apparent reason why they should not bo cut this ycai1 as well. That , at least , Is the way some of the roads are looking at the matter. Cvcry move of every competitor Is being watched with great care , and the very first time that any rate to Denver Is shaded there will be ono of the liveliest fights that the western roads have seen in a long time. Several other excursions that have been advertised are being closely watched , as It Is difficult to sco how some of the trips can be made and all the accessories that are promised can bo furnished at the advertised rates. The rates proper will not be cut , but the s'de ' trips , meals , transfers and other things which are to bo thrown In will make the rates much loner than can bo obtained by the reg ular tourists. Harry Hoffman was arrested by Officer Arnold Wednesday night and Is booked at the city jail on a charge of fast driving and dis orderly conduct. Dut a more serious charge will probably be fllod against him. About two weeks ago Hoffman made the acquaintance of a young girl named May Drown , who lives with her parents , on Illnney street. The acquaintance progressed rapidly , and Wednesday evening Hoffman asked the girl to join him In a drive out to Courtland beach. Her mother sat down on this , proposition , sayIng - Ing that her daughter was too joung to go out driving at night unless It was with Eome Intimate friend of the family , nut In the wisdom which she had accumulated during her sixteen summers May decided that she Knew better than her mother. She slipped out of the house after supper and met her new acquaintance. Ths couple drove out to the beich and spent the evening rowing on the lake nnd mingling In the various enjovmcnts of the re ort All this time Hoffman did not fall to put his best foot forward , and by the time they were ready to start for homo his fair companion was better assured than ever that the maternal advice was not worth tak ing. Hut before they had proceeded far on their homeward journey eho discovered her mistake. Her ardent lover grew more amor ous In his persuasions , and in tne end ho made proposals which were scarcely In keepIng - Ing with his assumed character of a gentle man. The girl Indignantly demanded to be allowed to get out and take the car for the remainder of the distance , but Hoffman de- chred that she would go with him , and holdIng - Ing her In the buggy with one arm , he turned toward a deserted section of the bet toms. The girl was thoroughly frightened , and screamed for assistance. Olllcer Arnold heard her , nnd called to Hoffman to stop , but Instead of obejlng the officer , he applied the whip to the liors" , and still holding the shrieking damsel , continued In the direction of the bottoms. The olllcer happened to bo a good sprinter , and Inspired by the frantic appeals of the girl , he soon overtook the rig and landed Hoffman safely behind the bars. Miss Drown was allowed to go home , nnd jesterday she appeared to file a complaint against her assailant. She Is a remarkably pretty girl , and appealed to the police to shield her es- capide from publicity. She said that her mother was still unaware of her predicament and If she found out that she had gone out with Hoffman she would never trust her agiln. She says that Hoffman works In a livery barn on Sherman avenue , and that she has only known him about two weeks. He had always pretended to be a gentleman , and she had taken his representations at par until he Insulted her. I'roo feoiln Water.
