CIIICAQO , Juno 21 After bobbing up nnd
down frequently over a 2 > io range , whcnt
wound up firm nnd < 4o higher today , helped
by a big visible supply tlpcrenno. Corn
closed unchanged ; oats lie lower , and pro
visions nt modest advances ,
Whcnt opened strong at from " 4o to to
advance over Saturday's closing prices , nnd
before the rush to buy had exhausted Itself
It had niado a H ln of Hie. I'eople were
runnlnK nround Inquiring the reason for the
euddcn Btrength , and the most of the re
cently suggcitcd cuu e was the continued
prevalence of wet wenther and high tem
perature In the northwest. That was con
sidered threatening to spring wheat , and
was supported by some telegrams from Min
nesota , reportlnK Bomo wheat Inalleys
already rusted. There were other reaconi
which may have prompted the sending
hero of come good sized buying orders by
New York people The Russian shipments
last week xvcro 400OUO bu . compaied with
nearly 0,000.000 bu. the previous week. The
Argentine shipments for the week , as olll-
clally posted hrrr , were 4"iOOoO bu The
total of the week's shipments from all coun
tries was 100OUO bu short of the e of the
week preceding , nnd the amount on ocean
passage Is 2,080,000 IOFS than It was a wctk
ago. The latter Itemof news came In
one by one after wheat had turned down
again , nnd the market kept declining ns
they were severally announced. The de
cline In the face of mieh news lrre pectlvo
of the domestic crop damage was a sur
Iirlso to the crowd , and as dllllcult to ac
count for ns the earlier bulge The de-
rllno was rapid and tevete The price of
July , which , on the opening advance ,
touched 71c , dropped to fiom Wi c to CS7nC
before 11 "W o'clock. The activity of the
bears ad led to the liquidation b > the longs
of their July wheat was the chief rca oti
which made the decline from 71c to CS c to
IVic possible with so much exclusively bull
ish surroundings. The visible supply de-
cteased 1.492,000 bu. , and the total Is now
4fl,225,000 bu , , compared with 63SuACOO bu a
year ago , and 63,031,000 bu two years ago
The amount In the visible pmiply outside of
the stocks held nt Chlcapo , Minneapolis and
Uuluth Is only 8,4fil,000 bu It was after
the visible flgure-H were received , but by
no means exclusively on account of those ,
that the third surprise to the crowd was
pprung upon them That refers to the
courseof the fluctuations , which again
moved In an upward direction , and near the
close July wheat again reached 71c. The
lattest trading wati at 70'ic , another 3ie drop
occurring In the last live minutes.
Corn was quiet for n moment at the openIng -
Ing on account of the spuit In wheat at
that time. It came under the Influence of
the fine crop prospects later In the ( lay , and
had a sharp break , from which It recov
ered near the end , and left off about the
game value as on Hatuiday. July opened
nt 48c. The visible supply decreased l,3hG-
000 bu , making the total now 9,499,000 bu
Now York reported a good demand for corn
for export and sales of from 20 to 25 boat
loads , nnd . " 00,000 bu w.iw the amount Fald
' to have been sold for shipment here , that
probably Including the etpoit Miles reported
from New York.
A wild nnd excited market was reported
for oats during the Hint half hour of the
session. Shorts were the principal promot
ers of the panicky feeling , buying freely
nnd forcing prices up Later , however , the
Bimo parties , who Satmday were prominent
for disposing of heavy lines of long stuff ,
returned their pounding nnd created a big
drop In the earlv gain September opened
frcm 26Uc to 27HC , declined to 25"4c and
closed at 26'X.c. The later advance was
caused principally through sympathy with
wheat and corn.
I'rovlslons were firm nt the opening , and
after a temporary weakness In the middle
of the session , they closed firm at an nd-
vance of ICe In i > ork , 2'4c In lard nnd Be In
ribs. Hog receipts were 23000 head. Trad
ing was only moderately nctlvc. The flrm-
r.esa at the start and finish was mainly in
Bjmpathy with wheat.
Estimates for Tuesdiv : Wheat , 40 cars ;
